Chapter 29: Lia’s Advise To Aria

Chapter 29: Lia’s Advise To Aria

Aria’s conversation with Hailey didn’t end as she would expect; she didn’t even get the time to tell her about her encounter with a feral, and that if not for Tristan, then she wouldn’t be alive today.

Unfortunately, Hailey’s dad kept ringing up her phone, telling her to get ready to have dinner at her future husband’s place. It was obvious; Hailey had already set her mind to do as her father’s wish, but she couldn’t accept it.

"Are you happy, Aria?"

That question kept ringing in her head even after she arrived back at Kirha Villa.

Aria stepped into the quiet, empty living room and let out a weary sigh before slumping onto the couch. Reaching for her phone, she opened Tristan’s last message.

’Don’t wait for me. I’ve stocked the fridge with groceries; make whatever you like if you’re hungry.’

Where had he gone? What if he reached his limit of using Zolan’s eyes? Then how would he make it back?

Wait! Was she actually worrying about him? But then, Tristan was always worrying about her. Even though they hadn’t known each other for long, he was there whenever she needed him. And when he thought she wasn’t watching, his gaze held a rare tenderness, unlike anything she had ever known.

"What are you thinking, Aria?" she whispered to herself. "Don’t forget the reason you married Tristan in the first place. Once you get Grandmother’s cure, then..." She trailed off. Then what?

Aria flinched at the sudden ringing of her phone. She saw that it was an unknown number calling her, but before she could answer it, the doorbell rang.

’Is Tristan expecting someone?’ Aria asked herself as she answered the call while going to answer the door.

"Hello." She said to the phone, but there was no answer. She looked at the number and brought the phone back to her ear. "Who is this?"

There was still no answer. The caller ended the call the same time Aria opened the door for the person who has been ringing the doorbell as if it was their own house.

Aria looked at the young woman who was responsible for the continuous ringing of the doorbell, and one word came to her mind: ’Pretty.’

"Who are you?"

The lady smiled and replied, "I’m Lia, and actually, I should be the one asking who you are, but unfortunately, I already know that you are his wife."

Before Aria could answer, Lia brushed past her and stepped inside as though she owned the place.

Glancing around the living room, there was a brief disdain in Lia’s eyes before she smiled. "I see Tristan hasn’t changed. Everything’s still exactly the way I decorated it."

Aria’s frown deepened. Decorated?

Lia’s gaze moved to Aria, and she let out a warm smile as she said, "I’m Lia, Tristan’s best friend. Now, I see why he married you."

"Huh?"

"You’re just so pretty. Did you dye your hair?" Lia asked, her eyes truly showing interest in Aria’s hair color.

Aria’s hand went to her hair as she replied, "This is my hair’s natural color."

"Wow. Tristan is always lucky when it comes to women. First Eva and now you. Hopefully, you won’t end up as Eva." Lia said with a sigh, and then, as if she regretted what she had just said, she looked away from Aria and apologized, "I’m sorry, I should never have said such a thing to you."

"No, there is no need to apologize. You said you are his best friend, right?" Aria asked, even though she had told Tristan that she believed he didn’t kill Eva; he also never told his true story with Eva.

Lia smiled at the question and said, "Yes, we have been friends since we were young. When Tristan was little, my mom would invite him over, and she would make delicious food for the young boy who could not see. Everyone knew the Alpha and Luna didn’t get along. Tristan’s dad saw him as a defect because he was born blind, while his mother saw him as a failure because she would never be known as the Alpha’s mother. They didn’t care about him, but my mother, who was the pack healer, would always feed him and sew his clothes whenever they got torn, and he started seeing her as his aunt. You could say both I and Tristan grew up together."

Aria’s chest tightened. "He must’ve gone through a lot."

"He did. And I was always there for him emotionally, mentally, and even... Lia paused, catching herself.

"Even what?" Aria asked with frown.

"It’s best I don’t say," Lia said with a small shake of her head. "That’s all in the past."

Were they lovers? Aria asked herself, and before she could even voice her thought, Lia said.

"Eva was actually jealous of my relationship with Tristan, and so, she never did follow my advice. I hope it won’t be the same with you.

"That depends on your advice," Aria replied, her voice calm despite the unease settling in her chest. Something about Lia felt... wrong.

"A man like Tristan doesn’t love," Lia said softly. "He’s too damaged, too broken. If you’re not careful, his darkness will consume you. Since we were young, he’s always shared that darkness with me. I’ve learned to carry it, but can you? Eva couldn’t. Did you know he never marked her? They weren’t even married."

"What?"

"After finding out that Tristan was his daughter’s mate, her father pushed her to him, and for some reason, Tristan never rejected her. How cruel! With the way he treated her, rejecting her would have been a form of mercy."

"How... how did he treat her?"

"Like she was invincible. Eva was desperate to win his love but he kept treating her as if she didn’t exist. I really did pity her and it was as if he enjoyed her suffering because why else would he refused to reject her when it was obvious he didn’t want a relationship with her. I advised her to run away, to go back to her family but she refused, adamant that she can win his heart and when she could no longer take it, she took her life and the blame of her death fell on Tristan."

Aria could not believe what she was hearing. Was Tristan really so cold to his own mate?

"Run away."

"What?"

"Eva didn’t listen to my advice, but I hope you will. Tristan only got married to you because you are a girl with no pack, and therefore, if anything were to happen to you, then there would be no one who would blame him. Think about it, Aria. He left daughters of powerful Alphas for you. Why will a man like Tristan Grant get married to you?"

That’s true. Why? Aria for sure knew it wasn’t the bunch of nonsense she had spewed on their first meeting, so why did Tristan agree to marry her just like that?

Now that he’s married, the Elders will stop pressuring him. Once they’re off his back, he’ll have no use for you. And knowing Tristan... he’ll find a way to get rid of you."

"You think he’d kill me?" Aria whispered, horrified.

"I’ve said too much." Lia sighed. "You seem like a nice person, and I don’t want you to end up like Eva."

"Thank you," Aria said, unsure what else to say.

Lia smiled. "Do let Tristan know I stopped by, but don’t mention everything we’ve discussed. He’d be furious."

"I won’t," Aria promised. She watched Lia leave, a lingering sense of unease twisting in her gut.

Outside, Lia’s lips curved into a sly smile. "That was too easy," she murmured. "If this doesn’t work, I’ll have to handle her myself. Let’s see if she breaks the same way Eva did."

Back at the villa, Aria no longer knew what to think. Both Hailey’s and Lia’s words were kept ringing in her ear, and the fact that she felt hurt when Lia implied that she and Tristan were close physically was also bothering her.

Has she perhaps started to have feelings for Tristan, but how? They haven’t even known each other for long, so how is that even possible?

So many thoughts were going through her head, including Lia’s advice of running away.

If she was really saying the truth about Eva and Tristan, then in a way, Tristan was responsible for Eva’s death.

The ringing of her phone brought Aria out of her thoughts, and she saw that it was the unknown number calling again. She was about to reject the call but later changed her mind and accepted it.

"Hello," Aria said, and once again was met with silence.

"If you won’t say anything, then I’m hanging up and blocking this number." Aria said sharply and was about to end the call when she heard a very familiar voice.

"How are you doing, Aria?"

Aria froze in shock at the voice she had not heard for two years: "Damien." She whispered.
