Chapter 20: Chapter Eighteen

ERWIN

"So may I know what my uncle dearest is doing here?" I fold my arms over the table.

"Well, I just wanted to have a small chat with you," Jean smiles but his eyes are saying otherwise, "since I could get to talk to you last night that much."

"Hmm," I purse my lips, "then you didn’t pick a good time to do so. I missed my class for you."

Earlier when I saw him, weaving at me I quickly sent John back inside. I don’t want the devil to lay his eyes on something precious to me. He will end up corrupting them. Just like I do. So, I took Jean to a nearby café to listen to what he had to say.

"But Erwin I don’t think it will cause you any problem at all." Jean goes on leisurely as he leans back on his chair, making himself comfortable.

"If I keep missing my attendance, then they will not let me graduate." I point it out to him.

"I don’t think it will ever happen because after all your husband donates enough for you to graduate, I presume." He drawls as a hint of fake amusement shines in his sharp eyes. "Isn’t it one of the reason you married him in the first place?"

So, we are getting to the point.

"Hmm," I pretend to ponder over it before simply answering, "you are right. But still I should have at least a bit of dignity."

"So you have self-respect?" Jean wonders as if having self-respect is a crime.

"Nope, I don’t." I answer in the same manner, "In fact, I am the most shameless person I’ve ever seen in my entire life." I smile mildly. "Aside from you." These words remain unspoken because both of us know this fact very well.

"You know what Erwin, I like you. So, I will give you a piece of free advice." He leans forward, "you should leave Leo’s side."

"And why is that?" Our lips curved up in smiles but it is regardless to say that our gazes are harp and icy-cold. We both know that if we let our guard down and let anything slip we are done for.

"You see, my nephew is quite different from other omegas." Jean starts to lazily explain the ’reason’, "He is very charismatic. He attracts people everywhere he goes. He has a very nasty history of it. So, there is no guarantee that he won’t leave you even if you don’t. You will end up getting hurt."

I chuckle at the last line of his statement, ’Uncle I think you mistook the situation. I don’t give a damn about what he does, whom he wishes or even whom he sleeps with. All I care about is his money."

’Then I can give you that too." Jean’s mild smile widens a little, he appears to be delighted by reply.

"Hmm, but I don’t want your money," I specify myself, ’I want his money."

"And what difference will it make?"

"No, the money doesn’t make any difference. But," I pause, "the provider does."

"You are being unreasonable, it is unexpected of you Erwin." In spite of saying this, Jean doesn’t sound a least bit of disappointed, "Or perhaps, you are in love with my little nephew?"

Am I in love?

Earlier when John asked me the same question, I didn’t have to think about the answer before answering because I was determined but now when Jean is asking me about it, I feel my resolve cracking. But the hell I am gonna give him what he wants.

I snort, "No, no, uncle you are the one who is being unreasonable."

"But it doesn’t seem so." Jean blinks, unaffected by my reply, "The way you planned last night says otherwise."

"Hmm, maybe. But you see, if I need to stop others from getting attached to what is mine, I need to do something like this now and then." I don’t change my tone.

We stare at each other for a beat. A same line echoing in our heads, He won’t go down this easily. He is a formidable foe.

I think we both knew the fact just when we laid our eyes on each other because of course we both belong to the same category of nefariousness. Rotten to the bones.

"Erwin don’t you think it is quite absurd to claim someone to be yours when you barely know him?" He says in his same laid-back tone, "Do you even know how Leo manifested as an omega when he was in his junior years? How did he come to dislike us? No? Then how do you expect to be yours?"

"Well, I can’t argue with that." I drawl in the same manner. "But you don’t need to tell me all that. I have my whole life ahead to know and play with my toy. And thanks for the earlier advice. I don’t think I will make any use of that in my life." I dismiss this baseless conversation.

"Hmm, I see," Jean gets on his feet and fishes out something from his pocket and set it in front of me, "I respect your decision, even so keep my business card, in case you need me."

"My pleasure," I smile and instantly pocket the business card without spearing it even a single glance.

As soon as Jean exits my phone buzzes. I pull out my phone and hold it before me. An unknown number.

"Hello?" I pick up the phone.

"WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU BASTARD?!" A familiar voice barks from the other side of the call.

"Hey Ruth, calm down." I grimace, "What happened? Where did you get my number from?"

"You are worried about that?! Come to the hospital bastard! Leo has collapsed! And it is because of you!" Ruth is enraged.

I instantly cut the call as I rush out of the café, my heart pounding and I can feel a knot tightening around my chest, preventing the oxygen from entering my lungs.

"John! Where are you?!" Anxiety and worry evident in my words. "Can you please to come to the parking garage? I need your car! Leo has collapsed."

John just replies with one word, "Okay!" And hangs up the call.

By the time I am in front of the garage, John is already waiting for me in his car.

"Hop on!" He barks.

"What are you doing here?!" I demand as I put my hand on the door knob.

"What do you mean what am I doing?!" He returns.

"You are not going anywhere." I bark back, "If your father knows about how you are skipping classes then he will be mad!" I say pointedly even though we both are already aware of the fact.

"The hell do I care about it!" He growls, "Let him be mad! I am not a kid anymore!"

"Right." I somehow manage to grin as I pull open the car door and hop in.

***

"What happened to him!?" I rush to Ruth, cold sweat forming in my hairlines. Kevin standing in a corner, his head hanging low, his face dark as if mourning.

Ruth grabs me by my collar and hisses angrily, veins popping in his forehead and fist, "He collapsed from exhaustion and hunger! He hasn’t eaten anything in the past twenty-four hours! What were you doing then, huh?! If you are his husband then at least do your job properly!"

My heart sinks as his every word pours in my ears, "L-let me see him." I plead quietly.

Ruth lets go of my collar and barks, "Go. But I swear if anything happens, I will rearrange your organs!"

I just nod lightly and push through the hospital’s door. Leo is lying in the hospital’s bed. Deep in sleep.

I take a seat beside him and look at him unblinkingly, guilt gnawing on me.

I am sorry...

Leo’s eye leashes suddenly quivers, he slowly opens his eyes. "Where am I?" He asks slowly, blinking a few times to focus on his surroundings.

"You are up?" My eyes sparkles a little seeing him sit up, "This is the hospital, you collapsed." I inform him.

"Oh." And the whole room falls into silence.

"Leo, do you know that I am using you?" I abruptly break the silence.

But Leo seems unaffected as he slowly answers, his eyes fixed on his laps, voice heavy with some unnamed emotions, "I know... but if it’s you then I don’t mind." He looks up at me.

My heart clenches as emotion clogs up in my chest, blocking my lungs from transferring carbon-dioxide.

"As I am already using you to fulfill my grandma’s last wish." He completes his statement.

This man before me doesn’t know how to feel nor does he has any will for himself. He is just doing what he thinks he is supposed to. He is practically hollow.

To think I will even have to teach you how to feel now.

"Leo, let’s go on a date." I exhale a deep breath to calm my internal tsunami down and grin widely as I ask him out.
