Chapter 400: Yami’s Breathing Technique!
Chapter 400
"I won’t kill you. I will just injure you and send you back to your clan to inquire who the hell you just messed with!" Yami calmly said as he took a single step—and in the next moment, he vanished completely from view.
In the blink of an eye, Yami came soaring from above, his sword aimed directly at the captain’s head. It looked like it would strike at any moment, but just as the blade neared, the captain disappeared from sight.
Boom!
Yami’s sword slammed into the ground, the blade slicing through it like a hot knife through butter. The earth split open, and a thunderous shockwave rippled outward, kicking up clouds of dust and debris.
"I told you, I’m not on your level!" the captain shouted as he suddenly reappeared behind Yami, his leg swung in a swift arc toward the still-arched Yami. A crescent-shaped burst of yellow energy erupted from the motion, surging straight for Yami’s back.
Sensing the attack, Yami instinctively leapt to the side, dodging by just an inch. He spun around mid-air, his sword flashing in front of him.
Clang!
Bang!
Yami’s sword clashed with the crescent energy. Without breaking a sweat, he twisted his wrist and swung the energy aside, dissipating it entirely in a single motion.
But the captain didn’t let up. In that very instant, he blurred forward once again, his movement so swift it resembled teleportation. He appeared directly in front of Yami, fist already rocketing forward, aimed squarely at Yami’s gut.
Reacting with surgical precision, Yami brought down his sword in a clean, sharp arc. A small frown crept onto his face as a powerful shockwave burst out from the impact, rippling the air and tossing both warriors’ hair wildly. Both men leapt back, separating just in time.
"Impressive!" the captain said with a cocky smirk. "In all of the Aetherian faction, you’re the only Stage 5 warrior I’ve seen who can match me in strength. And now... now I’m actually enjoying this fight."
His grin widened.
"So, give me more!" he roared as he charged forward, blitzing toward Yami with his right hand drawn back. As he approached, he swung his arm forward in a wide arc, as if swatting a fly.
The sheer force of his motion distorted the air. A loud bang followed, the sound of pressure being torn apart. The strike, aimed directly at Yami, carried an intensity that would level anyone else.
Yami didn’t flinch.
Instead, his Ki flared, surging into his sword. The weapon glowed brighter, strengthened by his energy. In one fluid motion, he brought the sword horizontally in front of him just in time.
Boom!
The captain’s hand collided with the blade, and the impact sent a tremor through the earth.
"Argh!" Yami cried out, his feet skidding backwards as the ground beneath him cracked apart. His soles dug trenches into the dirt, and pain pulsed through his arms. He winced as he fought to hold his ground.
Kuk!
A speck of blood escaped his lips as he coughed. Still, his grip remained firm on the sword, his gaze burning into the captain’s, even as his breathing grew labored and uneven.
"I already told you," the captain said, shaking his head, his hands now tucked casually into his pockets. "No matter what you do, there’s a difference between us. I’m a Stage 6 warrior. You’re a Stage 5. Big difference."
"So now, will you give up the red-haired? Do you still want to prove stubborn?"
"You want to take Grey?" Yami asked, his hands tightly clenched around his katana as his eyes narrowed into slits.
His legs bent slightly, calves bulging as his Ki swirled wildly around his body, crackling like an unstable current of power.
"Come arrest him over my dead body!" Yami roared as he exploded forward from his position.
Where he once stood cracked beyond repair, the earth caved in beneath him, and the air burst apart with a sound like a gunshot.
In a blink, Yami appeared beside the man, swinging his sword with fierce momentum. A massive wave of Ki burst from the blade, surging forward at immense speed, aiming to tear the man apart.
Sigh.
The captain shook his head. In a flash, he vanished from view. The wave of energy missed its mark, crashing violently into the ground and carving deep gouges that seared the earth.
"You are strong, resilient, and determined. I admire that. But I’m still a level above you," the captain whispered. He now stood directly behind Yami, his voice calm, but his presence intimidating.
"And I’m not to be trifled with!" Yami growled as he spun sharply, slicing his sword through the air in a clean arc aimed at the captain’s neck. But like before, the man disappeared again, effortlessly avoiding the strike.
This time, he reappeared four metres away, standing casually like he hadn’t even moved at all.
"Oh?" the captain murmured, raising a hand to touch his face. A crimson droplet ran down from a shallow cut across his cheek. "You’re becoming faster... slowly catching up to me."
"And soon enough, I’ll make sure I behead you!" Yami roared, his voice echoing as he launched forward once more with full force.
The captain simply sighed. "I guess I’ll just have to kill you first."
He blurred forward, matching Yami’s speed with terrifying precision. As he drew near, something yellow began to glow and form in his raised hand—a weapon materializing out of thin Ki.
Bang!
Yami struck first, swinging his sword in a fierce horizontal arc. A thunderous bang echoed, but the captain was gone once again. Instead, he reappeared beside Yami, a glowing yellow longsword now in his grasp.
Tchk!
Yami’s eyes widened as blood poured from his mouth. He coughed violently, fountains of crimson spraying from his lips as he looked down. The captain stood in front of him, grinning. His yellow sword was deeply embedded in Yami’s stomach.
"I warned you. Now look at the outcome," the captain whispered coldly.
He yanked the sword back, and blood dripped from the glowing blade before it disintegrated into glowing particles. Yami collapsed face-first onto the ground. His grip on his sword loosened, the blade clattering beside him. His breathing grew ragged, shallow, and erratic.
"We’re not supposed to kill civilians. That’s not how the Midnight Sun operates," the captain muttered, stepping forward with cold resolve. "Which is why I will eliminate all witnesses."
He reached down and grabbed Yami by the hair, lifting him up with a single hand as if he weighed nothing.
Ki flared around the captain’s arm, enhancing his strength beyond human limits. With a brutal swing, he hurled Yami into the air like a ragdoll. The wounded warrior soared upwards, several metres off the ground, his body limp and bloodied.
The Captain now had his hand pointed forward, his palm slowly glowing yellow, directed at the floating Yami, who was gradually descending back toward the ground.
"Once I’m done clearing you, I will clear your wife, your daughters, and your son. Then, I will finally take that red-haired custody." The Captain smirked as Yami’s chest rose and fell rapidly.
"Yami, Yami, Yami. You’re losing it!" a voice suddenly rang out in Yami’s ears as his consciousness began to fade. His grip on his sword loosened bit by bit as the wind lashed against his face.
"Control your breathing, control your breathing. Yami! Anger has made your breathing go wild. Bring it back under control now! Yami, control your breathing!" the voice roared louder and louder in his mind.
In the very next moment, Yami’s eyes snapped back open. His grip on his sword tightened, and he drew in a deep, hoarse breath, gradually steadying his mind and heart.
"Goodbye, Yami Cromwell. You fought well," the Captain said as his palm grew brighter and brighter, humming with pure destructive energy.
Yami, now rapidly approaching the ground, kept his eyes closed. But despite his descent, his breathing was calm, steady—controlled.
Then, in a low, firm voice, he muttered, "Breathing Technique: Fifth Formation."
His hand slid toward his sheath as he placed his sword into it completely, eyes shut, aura still.
Bang!
A golden burst erupted from the Captain’s palm, the yellow energy shooting forward like a concentrated beam of sunlight. It streaked through the air at immense speed, heading directly for the unmoving, eyes-closed Yami like a miniature sun hell-bent on destruction.
But in one fluid movement, Yami snapped his eyes open, kicked off the air, and swiveled his body to the side. The yellow attack narrowly missed him, screaming past and crashing into the ground below.
A deep hole instantly formed where it landed, shaking the earth with a violent explosion.
Boom!
"Wh... how is this possible?!" the Captain muttered in disbelief. But that was all he had time to say.
Yami suddenly appeared directly in front of him, as if space itself had folded. His hand rested on the hilt of his sword.
"Slice of the Wind," Yami muttered coldly.
In a single, precise movement, he unsheathed his blade, swung it forward in an arc, returned it to its sheath, and turned around—without saying another word.
Then, silence.
The world stilled. There were no sounds, no wind, no movement. It was as if everything had frozen in time. The Captain blinked rapidly, disoriented, wondering what had just happened.
’Huh? I thought he missed. Did he even atta—’
Bang!
Boom!
Suddenly, massive shockwaves erupted behind the Captain. The ground split open violently as a long, deep gash appeared, stretching for miles into the horizon, as if a divine sword had descended from the heavens and carved into the mortal realm itself.
But that wasn’t all.
The Captain realized the slash began directly in front of him. And finally, he felt it.
"ARGHHHHH!"
A pained scream tore from his lips as his body gave in. From his left shoulder downward, his torso had been sliced apart. His body slumped to the ground with a sickening thud, blood pouring out of him in rivers as the light in his eyes faded into darkness.
