Chapter 391: Travel and Travel Beyond Chapter Eight: Visitors_2
"Soka, you can’t fly today, maybe some other time. For now, let Zilvra take you to the cabin for a good rest," Lynch said apologetically to the Angel. "I have to discuss some matters with the boatman."
Though a bit unhappy, Soka obediently complied, which might be a characteristic of Celestial Creatures. If it were a demon’s offspring, whatever you asked her to do, she’d likely do the opposite.
Van Dijk eyed the approaching Lynch. "Young man, what brings you here? You should be in the cabin with that pretty girl. This old man doesn’t need help steering the boat."
"I’m not here to help; I have no actual sailing experience," Lynch said, standing upwind of Van Dijk to avoid the clouds of smoke he exhaled. "I just wanted to ask, when did Druids start appearing around here?"
"Druids?" The old sailor furrowed his brow. "Why? Are those Druids causing you trouble? They’re a real handful, I tell you."
"Trouble? Not quite," Lynch chuckled. "I’m just curious. There weren’t any when I was a child, but recently I’ve noticed signs of their activity. What brings them here?"
"It’s all because of that cockfight tournament!" Van Dijk exhaled a huge smoke ring, then held his pipe and spoke to Lynch. "Think about it, all we’re doing is a bit of cockfighting, and those Druids claim it’s against nature, saying it’s evil. They caused a ruckus at last year’s festival too, but fortunately, the lord’s army was nearby, so it wasn’t too chaotic. I reckon they’ll be back this year." He then lowered his voice as if fearing eavesdroppers, "Haisas’s army is already assembled, and if they dare come again, they’ll be surrounded and routed."
"I see," Lynch remarked. "Uncle Van Dijk, why don’t you teach me how to sail? I’ve read about it in books but never actually tried it."
"Haha, Lynch, are you really not going to spend time with the girl? That’s a big loss. Tell you what, to make up for that loss, I’ll teach you all the tricks of sailing. But how much you learn is up to you."
Saying that, the old sailor handed the helm to Lynch and began to excitedly share his years of experience.
The eagles in the sky continued to circle, their eyes constantly watching the figures on the boat, focusing on the Mage’s movements.
At night, as the river became difficult to navigate, Van Dijk docked the boat on the riverbank. He had long since hung a small fishing net at the stern, and in no time, the delicious local catch from the Fengduo River was in the pot for everyone.
"Come, come, taste my cooking; this is fish prepared by an old chef, something you won’t get elsewhere," Van Dijk called out to Zilvra. "Young lady, you should eat more. You look so pale; you must be lacking nutrients. Lynch is a good lad, but he’s not great at taking care of people. You need to understand that."
Zilvra looked at Van Dijk, not understanding why he was saying that. Lynch had merely repaired a boat for Van Dijk, using it as a substitute for their travel expenses. They owed each other nothing, so why did the old sailor keep speaking well of Lynch? Could there be some unresolved issues? Her pale complexion was only because female Drow were not yet accustomed to the sunlight on the surface. She needed to cover her eyes after riding for a while and had to shelter in the cabin even during the day. Although she was gradually getting used to it, it would still take time before she could act normally.
Soka sat nearby, stuffing unknown berries into her mouth. Although she could eat plenty of good things in the Celestial realm, she had never experienced the freedom to gorge like she did here. Van Dijk, seeing the little one continuously eating fruit, called out to her, "Young lady, come try my fish soup; I guarantee you’ll love it."
"Is fish better than berries?" Soka ran over to ask. She had spent the entire day with Zilvra. Besides Lynch, Zilvra spoke very little, which stifled the lively Soka.
"Of course. Just try it, and you’ll see," Van Dijk laughed. "Young girl, where do you come from?"
"Ah! Right, what’s my home called?" Soka tilted her head, thought for a moment, and then exclaimed, "Oh, it’s called the Sweet Sugar Mountain."
