Mage And Wolf -
Chapter 295
Chapter 295: Chapter 295
"We will now adjourn for a two hour break. Please be back in your seats on time so we can get these proceedings finished." The Demon Mediator Zircon announces once it’s clear no more questions for me are incoming.
I take Mila’s hand and climb down from the chair, leading her back to the dragons before I hear the annoyed sound of Mayor Johan’s voice and see the Imperial Guard coming my way. Fat chance gentlemen, this Titan is mine, and we’re going for lunch together.
The dragons seem to think our friendship is amusing, partially because we both treat the other as a pet, and they’re willing to let that slide just to ease the boredom that comes during the trial portion of these proceedings.
Mila either doesn’t notice or doesn’t care that we’re headed away from the rest of her species and towards the side of the room where the dragons have had a huge amount of snack food and roasted meat brought in. Every contingent ordered something different for lunch, and I fully intend to make my way around the room and try them all.
I know the Dragons won’t mind, neither will the Lycans. The Demons will probably be fine with it, it’s just the Nephilim and the Titans that might be an issue. But with Mila with me, the Titans should be fine, and I can keep her away from the Imperial Guard for a while.
He’s fully aware of what I’m doing, but the looks that the Dragons are giving him is keeping him out of this section, not wanting to cause an incident when it’s a Titan City on trial here.
"Hey Ragnar, what’s the deal with the Titan Imperial Guard? Mila here is supposed to be a marriage candidate, and that guy’s been everywhere today. In the attack on the carriage this morning, where they mistakenly thought she was along with her father going to work, then again at her house by her mother’s bedroom, then finally here at the trial. Every time he looks different, but he smells like the same person." If anyone other than the Titans would know, it would be a senior Avatar of the Dragon Gods.
"He’s likely been tasked to fake her assassination. The ones chosen to join the Imperial family have to break all ties with their families, and it’s easier to do that if everyone thinks they’re dead. That’s why the Imperial Guards are always in disguise, even their members are held to the same standards, but they go out in public and can’t risk someone recognizing them. The fact you can distinguish his scent is incredible though, they do their best to mask it." The Red Dragon explains.
That makes sense now. I should go ask him, it’ll be fun.
I walk directly over to him, with Mila in tow, smiling at his look of confusion. "I’m informed that you’re here for the successful candidate, and you want her to disappear without a trace, to break ties with her family."
Both Titans, plus every Titan in the area looks astounded by my statement. I can’t see them all, since I’m standing too close to the guard and Mila is beside me, but I can hear the Avatars and some of the Demons laughing, so it must be a good show.
"You heard correctly, and you’re making my job very difficult for no good reason, Lycan." He says in a montone that doesn’t quite hide his annoyance.
"If you’d just asked politely the first time I’d have helped you out. The whole attacking the carriage was a great plan, you know, if she had actually been in there and not just me."
Another nearby Titan speaks up. "We ran over a thousand scenarios for that pickup and not in a single one of them did the possibility of the Candidate washing their pet with the specially formulated shampoo, reserved only for the Imperial family come up. The shampoo is a unique blend whose smell all Imperial Guards are trained to track over long distances. Thanks to you we will have to update every one of our training scenarios."
I don’t recognize the scent of this one, he must have just gotten here. He smells like the same shampoo though. It’s faint but it’s there.
"Your Imperial Highness, what a surprise to see you in a place like this." I tease, letting the Guard know I caught the scent, and the Titans freeze.
I know over fifty paralysis techniques, and I don’t think a single one has an area effect as good as that phrase. The Titan that smells of the shampoo just stares at me like he’s seen a ghost. "How did you? No, it’s not possible, you must have guessed."
"Oh no, you use the same product long enough and the smell lingers. That or someone who does use it hugged you and left the scent behind. Once he mentioned it at the carriage, it was no problem for a Lycan to find that scent again the next time I smelled it." I point out, hiding the fact that my analysis was 70 percent pure BS and 30 percent conjecture.
"Fine, we will do this in an unconventional way. Princess Mila, we are here to pick you up for your wedding. I’m pleased to introduce you to your potential husband, whose name should not be spoken in public." The Guard announces loud enough for everyone to hear.
A cheer comes up from the Lycan delegation followed by stunned applause by the Titans, while the others really don’t see what the big deal is. The Titan Imperial family in question only rules over a handful of worlds, mostly in the Mortal Planes, and to these members of higher planes councils they’re not much of a big deal.
"Will there be a wedding party? We love wedding parties." Beta John asks and the Nephilim delegation cheers. They might not actually care about the bride or groom, but the prospect of a Lycan wedding party is high on their list of fun things to do instead of being here listening to witnesses and reading documents.
