Mage And Wolf
Chapter 245

Chapter 245: Chapter 245

"So, did you have a nice nap?" Karl asks when I open my eyes and I notice the orange ring to the light that indicates the sun is going down.

"I guess I’m not going to get that spa treatment in today, unless we do it after dinner and leave late." I say, looking out the window until he laughs at me.

"What?"

"It’s been nearly two days. You were in the middle of a revelation since yesterday morning." Karl explains.

I guess time really did get away from me. But that information was important to know. I’ll have to make it up to him later, he must have been terribly bored, waiting for me to finish what I was doing for two whole days. I’ve been known to run behind schedule in the past, but I’m usually at least on the right day.

"I learned a great number of things about the afterlife in these past few days that seemed like a few hours. I wonder if that’s related to the nature of the afterlife? But I can say for certain that I’m much further along my journey than I was when I began." I smile, leaning back against his chest to feel the pleasantly warm tingling feeling that means mate.

"I’m glad you’re progressing quickly, but we’ve got visitors. The Avatars have all come to visit us, interested in anything you might know about the Dragon relic that was turned over to the Divine Council. It seems their gods have told them you might know a thing or two about it, but didn’t give them any sort of solid details, so they’ve been waiting here to pick your brain." Karl says in a long suffering tone.

I suppose I might have learned a thing or two from the relic before I turned it over, but I’m not sure if any of it will actually be relevant to anyone. How much I can learn from the copy of the relic in my Soul Shrine is debatable, I don’t have enough information to even make a reliable guess. But how do I tell them that without upsetting the most politically powerful set of clergy in this group of mortal worlds. Politicians are tricky to deal with on a good day, and now they think that I’ll be able to give them Divine Secrets that might help them break through the barrier that’s holding them out of divinity.

If I’m going to meet with the Avatars that have assembled here, that means it’s formal wear day. The Royal Robes would just be pretentious in front of them, so it’s High Priestess wear. After a quick shower I will the Robes appear and find they’ve changed significantly. Before they were black with simple silver embroidery and two bands on the sleeves and hem to indicate my rank, where Karl’s have three. Now the embroidery is Gold, not silver, and three bands encircle my cuffs, but only one is Gold, the outer two are silver.

The same applies to my hemline, and the slippers that I rarely use have been upgraded with the floating effect of the Royal Robes. I’ve never seen this particular configuration before. In fact, the only ones I’ve seen with Gold embroidery are the Avatars.

The relic copy in my soul shrine comes to the rescue when I focus on it, looking for knowledge. This particular pattern indicates a Nomad, a third rank High Priest or Priestess that has been assigned a special task by their God.

Looking in the mirror I can see that the golden stitches around the neck form a series of open books. Don’t tell me I’ve been cursed to answer stupid questions for eternity. Song is the Librarian not me. I can sense the Goddess’ amusement at my interpretation, and the sense that I’m mistaken.

If it’s not spreading knowledge, it must be acting on it. Either giving it to those who need it, using it to shape things in a way that pleases the Death God. Something like a proactive oracle? Something like the Titans do, but only I know the desired outcome. That gives me a vague sense of nearly rightness. So I’m going with that for now.

Karl gives my new look a curious glance, but even I can feel the impatience of our guests now that they’ve heard me awake and mobile. I was hoping the hotel’s faculties would keep them distracted.

"Welcome everyone, my apologies for keeping you all waiting, I was somewhat occupied with a revelation from the Goddess." I greet the assembled Avatars with a bow.

"I see that. So she’s seen fit to make you a Nomad has she? Has she given you any clues what path you’re on, or do you have to find out on your own?" The Black Avatar asks.

"Can sometime explain to me? I’m a bit out of the loop." Karl asks politely and the Blue Robed avatar perks up.

"The pattern on the Robes indicates that her Goddess has a specific plan for her ascension. We call them Nomads because they go wherever they please, at the whims of the Dragon Gods. Officially they’re taking care of a singular task, but it always leads a Nomad to Divinity. What exactly the Death God might want her Nomads to do varies. Some become genocidal maniacs, some Assassins, a few take jobs as doctors, some roam the Planes doing random tasks only they and their God see the purpose of.

The Previous Black Avatar was a Nomad after resigning his post. She sent him to a mortal world to kill and then reincarnate rapists as their own illegitimate children for most of a decade. Then one day he just stopped and started making healing pills and giving them out to hand picked people all over another world. We never did determine why, and he won’t tell us, but a lot of them died the next day."

"She’s been doing the roaming the Planes thing already, maybe the Goddess thinks she needs to stay home for a minute and help us out?" The Purple Robed Avatar of the Silver Dragon, God of magic, jokes.

[Answer his first question, but only one question from him for today.] A Divine voice sounds in my head with an unearthly echo. It’s not the Death God’s presence, and it seems to be coming from the relic.
