Mage And Wolf -
Chapter 223
Chapter 223: Chapter 223
The three of them decide to hole up in an abandoned farm for the night and recover. Lelou is both wounded and exhausted, while Karl and Elder Song have been moving constantly to keep the more powerful cultivators among the Divine Transfer Cult from finding them.
They’ve had numerous run ins with them before, all going their way, but the number of these cultists is so high that getting surrounded and swarmed is a real danger. That’s what happened to Lelou that forced her to flee to a random world, ending up here.
Individually, they’re no match for her, but a hundred or more at a time becomes a problem. By Elder Song’s best guess, there should be about ten thousand cultivators in the Immortal Realm on this planet, and all are members of the same group.
"Do you think we should skip the planet for a while and come back when they calm down and you’ve finished your Breakthrough?" Elder Song asks, looking at Karl.
"I’m sure the Divine Council would be satisfied with the information we’ve gathered so far, since it’s clearly more than a two person job to control a planet. But the cultists are sensitive to shifts between worlds, so we should take a bit of time for them to stop actively searching for Lelou before we drag anywhere else into this mess." Karl says, thinking of what the best solution might be.
They’ll have a hard time blending in if they go to the city, but staying here in the abandoned farmhouse makes them easy targets for anyone looking for three outsiders.
"If this area is all pleasure focused, why don’t we head for a group of gluttons? I can eat as if I was in my Dragon form, and digestive pills are easy to make if you want to indulge and blend in." Lelou suggests.
"That could work, we’ll just need a little while to observe them first, since the Planetary Transfer spell often requires them to perform strange but specific rituals at frequent intervals." Elder Song agrees, leaning back against a wall.
That’s their signal to get some rest for the night. They traveled quite a ways from where they entered this continent, so they should have time to rest before any pursuers find them.
They don’t manage a whole night of peace though, the locals sensed three presences and decided that wasn’t enough people for anything they should be doing to fulfill the ritual, so they sent out some of their strongest to investigate and chastise the slackers. Elder Song is the first to notice their approach, and that they’ve alerted the groups searching for Lelou that they’ve noticed something suspicious. In his opinion, a fight is inevitable.
Karl starts setting Golems up with machine guns up all over the area surrounding the farm house, while Elder Song is building a defensive barrier to be activated at the last moment. Lelou takes a few minutes to ready potions and weapons for the three of them, as well as adding enchantments to the Golems ammunition. She might have spent a long time raising the next generations of soldiers, but she’s still a High Priestess of the War God.
They’re about as ready as they can get, and Elder Song is focused on getting a proper count of the enemies coming towards them. They’re too spread out for an area attack to be effective, and they’re coming from every direction. In normal circumstances, it would be easy to hold them off with Elder Song’s power, divinity is only a dream to 99 percent of these cultivators, but their skill with travel type abilities and spells is making things difficult.
The best he can do is prevent portals from opening in their immediate area, forcing them to charge the farmyard, but that is still a lot of area to cover.
The first groups of cultivators are now encircling the yard, shouting that they’ve seen the targets and warning each other of the Golems. Not that it’s going to do them any good, they’ve never even heard of a rifle before, there’s no way to prepare themselves for what is about to happen.
Elder Song has kept his cultivation level hidden since they arrived on this planet, not wanting to attract attention from any Divine Realm Cultivators the Cult might have, so it’s Karl that sets the first barrier around the yard. It’s not intended to hold for long, only to let the rest of the cultivators catch up before things get nasty.
His plan is working exactly as intended, the cultivators are lined up in a tight circle, working to destroy the barrier, with more approaching from behind them when the barrier falls and the bunny Golems light up the early morning darkness with heavy weapons fire. A few cultivators manage to block or deflect bullets with their energy, but the area is now coated with blood and bodies are scattered all around as the front lines try to flee and the back lines start taking fire through the gaps.
These cultists have worked together before, and have plans for almost any contingency, at least any that they could think of. The gunfire is new to them, but they’ve faced ranged energy attacks before, and they’re treating them the same way. They try to open portals to get beyond the Golems, but Elder Song has the area locked down. Instead they opt for a movement skill that covers ground in large jumps, too fast for the Golems to target.
One after another, the bunnies are picked off before the cultists swarm the farm house. Lelou transforms as she steps out the front door, taking to the air in a wave of fiery breath. Elder Song follows, watching her back while Karl needs a moment to adapt to the flood of Death Energy.
Just like what happened to Katrina in the Divine Plane, the deaths of large numbers of high level cultivators is flooding his system. Kat can feel it through the bond they share as Karl is showing her the vision of these recent events.
Holding off the breakthrough, Karl starts firing small scale nuclear explosions at the cultists, only detonating a few grams of material at a time, but the explosion is still far greater than what they would expect from a Mortal Realm cultivator. Plus, blowing up their shirt is a great way to get through a cultivators defenses.
It’s going well, for a while, until a surge of energy from a high level Immortal dying unbalances Karl, making him drop his barrier, and a wave of energy attacks crushes the structure of the farm house.
The replay starts getting blurry and the last thing Kat receives from Karl is the sound of Lelou shouting that a portal is opening in the containment zone.
