Mage And Wolf -
Chapter 219
Chapter 219: Chapter 219
Now that Duke Marianne has been cured of his curse we return to the hallway and head for dinner. The other nobles we pass are all dressed as we are, Summer Casual, so at least the Prince wasn’t pranking us. Most of them look horribly out of place though, like they’re so stuffy that they don’t ever do casual wear.
"There’s more guests here, but I’m not sure when they arrived." The Duke tells me, looking at the table settings. This room is interesting, the far end of the table is down a set of steps, so Nephilim sized guests and human sized ones can all be seated at the same level, as opposed to the Nephilim King who used high chairs to make up the difference. The table is still quite high though, sized for the Demon King, who is quite tall for a human and sits on a throne like chair. Clearly everyone else is expected to adjust to what makes him comfortable.
An incredible level of Kingly flex. I’m impressed.
As if thinking of them Summoned them, both Kings walk in side by side. That’s unexpected, I didn’t know the Nephilim King was going to be here. He’s giving the whole place a look like it smells like a latrine, maybe because of the Unholy Energy, though Nephilim can cultivate it just fine, or possibly because he was required to go to a lower Plane.
The Demon looks stressed by the interaction, giving the impression that negotiations aren’t going well. Then he catches my eyes and lights up like a Christmas tree.
"High Priestess. We’ve been looking all over for you. This Council Representative from the Divine Planes is here to fetch you, and was quite concerned for your safety." He says in a hurry.
"Did you bring big sister to play, or is this all business?" I ask the Nephilim King with a smile and he laughs.
"Business. You disappeared alone for a month with a Divine Relic and the council started to get anxious to retrieve it. They thought the team might have lied when they said you survived the explosion that leveled a city in that other Immortal Realm. I checked myself and it was your power that caused the explosion." He replies, his solemn voice not matching the amusement in his face.
"She did that? That’s impossible, such destruction was assumed to be the result of a high level Divine Cultivator." Prince Ivan interjects and I giggle. Maybe this isn’t the opportune moment to mention it was a cultivation Sect.
"Don’t underestimate this creature. She’s not normal, even for a High Priestess of the Death God. She even turned my own daughter to her side." The King complains. So that’s the real reason he was the one to come. He lost to the puppy eyes.
"My apologies, it’s only been a day in local time. I didn’t realize we had caused a fuss." I bow my head slightly and curtsey.
"We can go after dinner. Do you need a high chair?" he jokes and the Demons look a bit pale, wondering how I’ll take it.
"I’m sure they’ve got one, but I’ll sit with my fellow short people instead."
The nobles are starting to fill the place, so we cut our banter and find our seats. All the chairs are labeled with names, titles and a number I don’t recognize, until I get to mine. Seventeen Thousand Five Hundred. The ranking my adjusted species was given in the Divine Plane.
The chairs aren’t sorted by the ranking though, which seems odd, until I realize the waiters place them in the middle of the table once the seat is occupied. They’re flash cards for social interactions. A quick glance shows only a handful of Demons other than the Royals are born Immortal, which surprises me, but the titles seem more important as everyone uses them every time they address each other.
I’ve been seated between Prince Ivan and Duke Marianne, and directly across from the top three councilors. All three are glaring at the bracelet on the Prince’s wrist and ignoring the pleasant conversation all through the soup course, so I decide to break the ice.
"I see that the singular nature of my payment has caused some resentment, advisors. In recognition of the terrible falling out that I have caused, I am prepared to offer you a gift." I pull the cursed costume ring from my inventory and hold it up.
"A cultivation aide from the Divine Realm, from me to the council. It’s not made for Demons, but I’m certain it will still have a significant impact." I say kindly, offering them the ring which they grab at greedily before offering thanks.
"You are too kind, High Priestess. We are honored to be recognized by your generosity." The leader of the group gushes and I discretely wave off the Nephilim King’s efforts to warn them that the item is cursed. With the gift, the whole mood of the dinner changes. Gone is the tension and animosity, instead everyone is eating like old friends.
We’ve finished a most excellent dessert of Strawberry cake and are chatting about cultivation over coffee when the Nephilim King stands and gestures for me to rise as well.
"It is time we depart. The time difference between worlds has held me away from home too long already. I thank you for your kindness, and hope one day you might be able to visit my kingdom in person." He informs the other King and opens a portal right here in the dining hall.
"Thank you for your hospitality. It’s been a pleasure doing business with you." I nod to the King and give both the Prince and Duke a hug.
Once we’re through and the portal is closed the Nephilim King turns to confront me.
"What’s with cursing the Demon King’s advisors?" he asks suspiciously.
"They tried to steal the fee I paid for the last bit of the Relic and it was annoying. The curse took me all of one minute to cure, I’m sure they’ll be fine." I shrug.
Speaking of which, I can feel the relic in my mind, the collection of Knowledge it has stored has settled into the shrine in my Spirit Ocean. I really need to get around to looking at that eventually.
