Mage And Wolf -
Chapter 201
Chapter 201: Chapter 201
The next morning the Lycans take their leave after promising to call on me the next time they’re playing in the area. I also learned that the Celestials aren’t the only ones they play this game with, their extended royal family just happens to have a lot of pretty, unwed daughters.
The Celestial Prince takes me aside to chat after the Lycans leave, asking if I’m alright, or held hostage here. He is under the impression that my eyes are a marker of Celestial blood, and they’re very firm about looking after their own. That makes me wonder though, if the happy new couple does have a bunch of children, will they come out looking like I do now, with the flawless skin, black eyeballs and half Lycan second form? Or will they come out more like either parent.
It seems a bit tacky to ask him about his sister getting laid though, so I’ll have to find someone else to answer those questions. What I need is a Nephilim version of Elder Song. Someone with real answers instead of just more questions.
After I assure him that I’m capable of leaving on my own, the Celestial group leaves satisfied, returning the palace to relative calm.
I’ve got two missions left here. First, find a way to bring Ahra back with me, or get her settled into a decent life. The transmission token will only bring its bearer. Second, see how Princess Paula’s pregnancy is coming along. Elder Song wants good notes, and I really want to know how well my strategy worked.
An entire week passes in relative peace. I help Amanda with her alchemy all day, explaining things so she can understand, instead of explaining as if she had been doing Alchemy for a millenia like her previous teachers did. I also check in with Princess Paula at every meal to see if she’s felt any changes, discomfort, unusual feelings or cravings. I know nothing about Nephilim pregnancy, so I’m going to record everything.
The Eighth day is when the doctors announce that they can do their first scans to determine the health and viability of the child, though they’ll need to wait to determine the gender.
With pregnancy only taking three months, this mission to record it is actually interesting. Something new happens every few days. Yesterday was the first morning of morning sickness though, which is unfortunate. It was quickly cured with a pill, but that’s beside the point.
"You simply must accompany me to the doctor. You’re my good luck charm for healthy children." Paula insists and I smile.
"Of course I’ll go with you. I helped get you into this, the least I can do is see that you’re healthy." I respond, patting her tummy and making her laugh. It doesn’t feel any different than usual, but we’re only just getting started.
"Now dear, just lie back on the table and I will get you set up. I’m so happy to hear you managed to conceive so soon after your wedding. Your father took over a century." The kind looking Nephilim doctor lady tells her.
She doesn’t look centuries old, but appearance means very little here, and I’m still working on understanding the life energy fluctuations that indicate age. I’m told I should be able to sense them, and I can, but making sense of them is the problem. Understanding the cultivation energy flows I can see now is much easier.
"Now let’s see. The scan definitely shows healthy, viable life. Very healthy in fact by these levels. If we scan here we should be able to see. Oh My."
"What is it doctor? Is my baby alright? I brought my lucky charm with me, please say she’s alright." Paula begins to panic and I try to hide my smile, knowing what’s coming.
"Not baby. Babies. I have found five viable embryos so far, but let me finish my scan. Yes, five in total. And the scan says they’re not identical twins. I’ve never seen anything like it in a Nephilim. Tell me, where did you get the fertility aid you used?" They both look in my direction, and I look over my shoulder to see if anyone is behind me.
Nope, they’re looking at me.
"Well, they work very effectively on Lycans. Maybe a bit too well for a Nephilim’s preference." I shrug, making notes on the images shown on the screens.
They’re both still speechless, so I decide to play along and see how much fun I can have with this. "Five puppies in a litter is pretty reasonable. Not too many, but not so few that you’ll get lonely. Congratulations Princess Paula."
That definitely didn’t help the speechless situation, but the sound of the door opening saves me.
"How is it? Is our child healthy?" Prince Mahmoud asks as he rushes in.
"Children. And they’re all healthy right now. Congratulations, you’re going to be a Papa." I tell him and hug his leg.
"Nephilim never have twins. Are you sure?" He asks the doctor who only nods.
"Nephilim never ask Lycans for help with fertility either. How many times did you try that you managed to get her pregnant five times over?" I tease him.
"Maybe thirty times in the two days before it was confirmed?" He says absently, looking a little pale. Oh, he’s fainting, I had better catch him before he hits the floor.
Grabbing him under the wing joints and flying up is the best I can do, given his size, but it’s enough to carry him to a chair in the corner to rest off his shock. Nobody is doing anything, just staring at each other and the screen. I put the response in my notes anyhow.
A few minutes later when we don’t come out, the King comes in, takes one look at the screen, laughs and walks back out again. At least someone took the news well.
By the end of the day the palace is in an uproar. The King has managed two children in five hundred years. Paula is having five at once, the same year she got married. The advisors are considering making the little Royals birthday a national holiday, should they all be born healthy.
Nephilim from all over are asking the King to disclose the technique that accomplished such a miracle, but he’s keeping tight lipped, calling it an act of fate. I think he just doesn’t want to overturn the balance in high society with a huge number of noble children who aren’t in line to inherit.
Just in case, I’ve started making lower grade versions of the aphrodisiac incense, going for quantity and weakening them to Rank 3 from Rank 4. 10 hours effect on Nephilim from the full strength version seems to have been a bit excessive.
