Mage And Wolf -
Chapter 186
Chapter 186: Chapter 186
Everywhere I can see, the Prophetic Security forces have jumped into action, attacking the Giants and rallying support. They seem to be especially dense at our location, coming in almost shoulder to shoulder before looking for the three of us and attacking.
They’ve come prepared, most of the Hill Giants in our area are in late Core Formation, with a few in the final stages of the Immortal Realms who turn their attention to Elder Song.
The changes to my body from Elder Song’s Divine Tribulation Lightning, coupled with my physical cultivation style make dealing with attackers taller than the surrounding buildings easy. I can jump high enough to kick them in the head if I like, but attacking their groin and chest takes them down just as fast, and without putting me in easy reach of grabbing hands. For what reason I don’t know, but they seem very intent on capturing me, opting to try to grab and crush me instead of throwing large scale energy attacks at me like they’re doing to Karl.
I crush the knee of my next opponent, making him flail for balance before the black and white serpentine Dragons created by the combination of my energy and the ability granted to me by the Cathedral Totem rip into his stomach, forcibly tearing his core from his body. Judging be the enraged roaring of Giants, that might not have been the best idea I’ve had today. They’re even beginning to turn their backs on Karl to swarm me.
Most Giants also pick a physical cultivation technique and path, due to their extremely low aptitude for any sort of magic, and that has become their downfall. Karl is capable of attacking dozens of targets at a time, and the distracted ones lack sufficient energy control to defend against his attacks without looking at him. He has backed up close to Elder Song in a defensive formation with a handful of the Prophetic Security forces, and I’m a few city blocks away, circling behind their primary ranged attackers, hoping to take out the bulk of the energy attacks so they can fight freely.
Looking around from the back of a heavily armored attacker, where I jumped to dig my claws into his neck and break his spine, I can see that the Giants are starting to get reinforcements.
In areas where they’ve not been fully engaged they’re starting to set up some sort of artifact that looks like a fence. If it’s not contained it becomes a platform to transfer between their realm and ours, and ordered ranks of Half Giant soldiers are already entering the city.
The Elders of the Sects still in the city are making the platforms a priority, but the Giants aren’t dumb enough to leave them undefended, so getting to them means fighting through a small army. I send my findings to Karl through the mind link we share so he can pass it on to Elder Song and the defenders with them, before returning to my attempts at clearing the ranged attackers only to find that they have been joined by one of the late Immortal realm Giants, which will make this a very, very difficult proposition.
Not impossible though, the numbers in this area are thinning, and we’ve still got plenty of defenders, even more having joined us once they realized we were the epicenter of the attack. I’ll give them this, the Prophetic Security forces are single minded. They’re clearing the city of only the Hill Giants, ignoring the half giant forces, clear about their mission to avoid a negative prophecy or mass slaughter.
I’m starting to think we’ve got this in hand when more Hill Giants start appearing, but only near us. They’re everywhere except in the barrier erected by Elder Song, which appears capable of preventing them from arriving within a city block of him, but not from charging through it to physically attack those within.
I try to get within that radius, but they’re determined to keep me separated, sending Giants with clubs to try to swat me across the city. So far they haven’t managed, and I’m holding my distance despite their efforts, but one solid hit and I’ll be a human sized baseball, even if my barrier holds.
I’m near the cluster of mystic type cultivators now. They’re head and shoulders shorter than their Kin, and lightly armored for maneuverability. I sacrifice some of that, being able to only bend at the hips in this outfit, but the Corset is leather with steel boning and enchanted. I deemed the sacrifice worth the additional protection for my vulnerable areas, a tradeoff worth the reduced chance of a crippling internal injury.
The Immortal Realm Giant they sent is a physical cultivator, and he’s ridiculously fast. I’m a Lycan, known for our speed and agility even before cultivation, and I’ve maximized it with my cultivation path. But this particular specimen of the giant races has no problem keeping up with my attacks and even preventing me from getting to his brethren now that he’s gotten me in range.
It’s a desperate fight, waves of redirected energy Crushing the buildings around us and knocking away any that attempt to intervene. I am doing my best now to get into the barriers erected by Elder Song, as the strongest of the Giants have him too busy to come to my aid at the moment.
To make things even worse, something new has begun. When I set foot on the ground, black circles begin to open at my feet, trying to pull me in. I don’t know what level of damage that will do, and I’m not intending to get trapped within one and find out firsthand. Going from building to building while defending against a giant intent on crushing any means of escape and preventing me from joining my allies is exhausting, so I pop an energy pill and bring myself back up to full form.
No way can these Giants keep up their attack forever, the glimpses I can see of their platforms show many are destroyed and over half of the forces are either eliminated or surrounded and on the defensive. We’re winning this fight.
The circles don’t seem to be the Immortal Giant’s ally either, or the skill is sloppy. He trips in one as he’s trying to swat at me with his club, flattening the building underneath me and sending me tumbling towards the ground.
I can hear Karl swear and shout for me to watch out through the mind link, but I don’t have time to react before large hands have grabbed me and are pulling me downwards.
[We will find you] is the last thing I hear before the blackness of the portal blocks the link and then my consciousness fades.
