Chapter 62: Chapter 62

"And she’s ugly too!" Cindy exclaimed, furious that a man as kind and rich as Aiden could fall into Winter’s trap and die in her hands. "No wonder she’s not so generous to our mother. Instead of giving her a luxurious mansion, she only bought us a two-floor apartment in Brooklyn!"

"Oh really?" Camilla raised an eyebrow. "She’s much richer than that, you know."

"I know! My mom always said she didn’t want to leave Brooklyn because she was born there, and she wanted to die in that place, too. But do you believe that? I bet she’s just trying to make peace with her situation so she doesn’t upset Winter!" Cindy ranted. "I mean, who doesn’t want to live in a... super expensive mansion?"

Camilla was even more impressed by the way this woman thinks. They were quite similar to some extent.

She was a fan of anything luxurious in this world, including a super expensive mansion. She was initially worried about not living in a penthouse, but after finding out the mansion Sebastian and Winter bought was more expensive than that penthouse Winter lived in, she didn’t mind anymore and settled into that mansion.

Camilla also agreed with Cindy about Winter being unattractive. She thought that Winter was unfortunate-looking; she looked so gloomy, as if she was always on her last breath and she’d die in a freaky accident, like jumping off a building for example.

Many people—even her family and friends—said that Winter looked so elegant and soft, but Camilla believed that it was just them trying to be nice and polite on the wedding day.

’I don’t know what Aiden saw in her. But I’m sure my son wouldn’t be stupid enough to fall in love with that kind of woman,’ Camilla thought. She refocused on Cindy and commented, ’But this one also looks unfortunate. She’s even worse than Winter. She looks so average. At least Winter would instantly attract attention at a party, but this woman...’

’On top of that, she’s also an idiot. She blabbers about her problems with someone she just met. She doesn’t seem to have anything to hide in that empty brain of hers.’

Camilla was in a dilemma. She had been trying to find the perfect spouse for her son, but none were good enough.

She wanted Sebastian to have a perfect spouse so they could produce perfect offspring, a grandchild who would be even more obedient than him.

Camilla almost giggled whenever she imagined training her grandchildren. If it were a grandson, she’d train him just like she did with Sebastian.

If it was a granddaughter, she’d train her to be just like her grandma.

"Speaking of your mom, how is she? Winter never told me about her mother," Camilla mentioned. "She always said that her mother is old and sickly and lives in a retirement home. So I stopped inquiring because I thought she hated her mother."

Camilla was lying, of course.

Winter never told her any of those. She always shifted the topic or gave perfunctory answers whenever Camilla asked about her family.

It was probably to protect her family from harm, especially since Winter didn’t come from an influential or powerful family. They could easily be targeted and put in danger. They could even be used as hostages to get something from Winter.

’She learned a lot from Aiden, I guess,’ Camilla thought. ’I should applaud her because she knows how to protect herself and her family, unlike her sister.’

Just as expected, Cindy began to rattle on about her family life, not without adding and twisting a few details to make it more advantageous for her to fish out some sympathy from her future mother-in-law.

"My mom—Gina—is an old woman in her seventies. She picked Winter up from the street as a baby and raised her alone. Gina has always been kind towards Winter, but Winter... she..." Cindy choked out a sob before continuing, "She’s abusive and neglectful towards our mom. She doesn’t care if Mom is sick or even hungry. All she did was buy that apartment and let us rot!"

"T-that’s why I worked so hard ever since high school, taking part-time jobs here and there because my mom’s retirement fund isn’t enough for us to live comfortably. I’ve always been independent since I was young!" Cindy claimed boldly.

"So, Winter is adopted, huh?" Camilla murmured. ’No wonder Winter and Cindy look so different. They aren’t actual siblings.’

"How about you?" Camilla asked.

"I—I am my mom’s real daughter. That’s why Winter has this competitive nature against me. She seems kind to me in front of others, but she always intimidates me when we are alone!’

"I see. I didn’t know she could be so cruel," Camilla muttered.

It might have sounded like she believed Cindy, but Camilla had worked her whole life as a loan shark and encountered tearjerker stories every day.

She didn’t believe Cindy’s story for one crucial reason: Cindy’s idiocy meant that she lacked self-preservation, which indicated she was probably spoiled from a young age.

Nevertheless, Camilla didn’t care whether Cindy was lying. The fact that Cindy was ready to betray Winter meant she hated her sister, or at least she felt no sibling bond with Winter.

’The enemy of my enemy is my friend, I guess,’ Camilla thought. ’Even if that friend is an idiot.’

As much as she hated to admit it, Camilla had to discard the idea of using this stupid woman to replace Winter. This woman wasn’t even smarter than Winter and also wasn’t prettier. Cindy was an inferior version of her sister, who was already inferior.

’But I can still use her to sow discord between Sebastian and Winter. I want to make sure that my son realizes how much of a shitty woman his wife is.’

"I feel apologetic for what my son had done to you. He’s just confused because Winter is trying to poison his mind. I hope you’re still willing to work with him in the office," Camilla said.
