Chapter 56: Chapter 56

Cindy glared at her sister, who had barged in without knocking.

She had no idea how long Winter had been standing there and assumed her sister must’ve heard everything.

"Do you not know how to knock, sis?" Cindy asked sarcastically.

"She’s my wife. She’s allowed to come in and out of this office without knocking," Sebastian reprimanded her instantly. "You should know your place as an intern here."

Cindy darted her eyes at Sebastian, feeling hurt and betrayed by his response. She hadn’t expected him to take Winter’s side even though Cindy was the one who acted more excited when meeting him, unlike her sister, who always had that standoffish attitude when talking with Sebastian, her own husband.

Winter chuckled but showed no sign of affection in her eyes. She stared at them with obvious contempt. "Don’t be so harsh on her, husband. She’s your new secretary too. Look at how hurt she is because you defended me. You should know that young women have a sensitive heart."

Winter said those words with such a sweet tone but meant nothing of it. She just liked the pained expression that Cindy made right now; it’d serve as a lesson for her to learn how to dress and act appropriately in a formal environment.

Sebastian also knew this, since Winter’s eyes were as vicious as ever. But he didn’t care, even if she didn’t mean any of her words.

Her calling him ’husband’ was enough to make his day.

"And stop staring at me. Cindy is right in front of you. Act like a gentleman, Sebastian."

Sebastian clicked his tongue, ignoring her advice. He didn’t care about Cindy when Winter was in the room. He was like a teenage boy hypnotized by beauty, unable to take his eyes off her.

Meanwhile, Cindy wasn’t deluded enough not to realize that Sebastian was taking Winter’s side. She didn’t understand what had gone wrong, as she had obviously tried her best to look presentable in front of him. Yet, Winter’s presence seemed to sweep all her efforts away.

’No, don’t tell me he’s actually in love with Winter. It’s just not possible!’ Cindy denied the idea vehemently. Her mind quickly tried to find a reason for Sebastian’s affection towards Winter.

Then, it clicked.

’Ah, how did I forget that Sebastian married Winter for her inheritance? She got ultra-rich because her first husband died. He has to show some affection to her and wait for the right moment to get all of her wealth.’

Cindy was satisfied with her own reasoning because she thought it was the only reason Sebastian was affectionate towards her sister.

Thus, she no longer had a sense of crisis and puffed her chest confidently.

’Well, if that’s the case, I’ll be the clear winner. I get Sebastian as my husband and Winter’s wealth on top. I’ll be the winner in life!’

Winter noticed the shift from anger to joy on Cindy’s face, which made her wonder what she was thinking about.

’Honestly, I don’t even want to know at this point. Cindy is too far gone with how irrational she has become,’ Winter thought.

She hadn’t intended to barge in initially, but after eavesdropping by slightly opening the door, she overheard Cindy suggesting that Iris be kicked out of the company so it’d make Cindy the only secretary.

Now, she didn’t care if Sebastian and Cindy were having an affair in the office. Far from it—she had taken out her phone and started recording for hard evidence in case it ended up in divorce court.

However, the direction of what happened was far from her expectations, so she had to intervene before Sebastian acted on what Cindy suggested.

She had already promised herself to protect Iris, her friend who had always been loyal to her, so she had to step in.

"Now, I just heard something very peculiar. I heard someone suggesting that the CEO should fire a very competent secretary. For what reason? I don’t have a good memory," Winter smiled. "Would you mind telling me, Cindy? Why would he need to fire Iris?"

Cindy didn’t respond because she was in a dire situation right now.

She didn’t want her lie to be uncovered so fast, so she kept looking at Sebastian, waiting for his response first before she said something to improvise.

But Sebastian said nothing.

He was busy staring at Winter as if he were hypnotized.

Knowing Cindy wouldn’t respond, Winter decided to make the confrontation more interesting.

"Oh, I think I remember now. You told Sebastian that Iris told you not to help her with her job and that she said you’re not as good as her, right?" Winter smiled. She turned her head towards the secretary’s desk and signaled Iris to come to her side.

Iris walked over and stood next to Winter at the door, crossing her arms calmly and looking at Cindy with a condescending gaze.

"Now that Iris is here, why don’t you repeat what you said to the CEO right to her face, Cindy?" Winter said calmly. "I’m sure you can say it, right? Don’t worry, you have me—your own sister—with you. As long as you tell me the truth, I’ll be the one who fires Iris."

Cindy gritted her teeth. Her own sister had cornered her.

She didn’t expect Winter to be cruel enough to interrupt and shame her like this, even though Cindy had been nothing but good and obedient.

She also glanced at Sebastian, who was ignoring her completely.

Feeling wronged, Cindy began to squeeze tears out of her eyes and she started to sob, "I can’t believe you are scheming against your own little sister, Winter."

Winter frowned, "Scheming? What on earth are you talking about?"

"You’re the one who told me in the elevator that Iris was gossiping about me behind my back. You told me that she hates my guts and can’t wait for me to leave, so I had to retaliate because I still want to work here!"
