Madam Wants To Divorce Her Second Husband -
Chapter 42
Chapter 42: Chapter 42
Winter kept her lips zipped as Arthur drove her back to the penthouse.
Arthur had been working as Winter’s protector for a long time, so he easily noticed that his Madam was angry—no, furious.
Madam Winter wasn’t the type to explode like a volcano when angry. Instead, she would stay silent and snap at anyone who dared to interrupt her silence.
Usually, when she was still married to Aiden, that anger wouldn’t last long because Aiden and Winter would make up after some time.
But now that Aiden was gone, Arthur got increasingly wary.
He knew Sebastian Saenz was a scum who didn’t deserve to marry an angel like his Madam. But Winter was a very patient woman most of the time, so he wondered what that scum had done to make Winter angry.
Gathering his courage, Arthur asked, "What happened, Madam?"
Winter wasn’t the type who’d share her problem with Arthur.
Even when Aiden was still alive, Winter would only engage in superficial banter with Arthur, who had been nothing but loyal to her.
But now that Aiden was dead, she had nobody else to talk to. Swallowing her pride, she asked, "Arthur, do you think I’m ugly?"
Arthur looked over his shoulder for a second before returning his gaze to the road. In that one second, he looked at her as if she was crazy.
"Madam, you are, by far, the prettiest woman I’ve ever seen in my life."
"Just tell me the truth, Arthur."
"I am telling the truth," Arthur insisted. "I don’t know what that scum man said to you, but I am telling the truth. I’d never lie about this."
"But my husband doesn’t think so," Winter scoffed. She rested her head on the window, feeling the sadness that ate her from the inside out. "I really am ugly... and old."
At first, she was angry, so angry, that she wanted to punch Sebastian and Cindy for cheating, but none of them knew they would eventually cheat in this life yet.
She had been thinking about the possibility of Cindy becoming Sebastian’s mistress in her previous life and tried to make peace with it.
She thought Cindy was trying to avenge their mother because Winter had abandoned them.
But now her mother was safe and sound, and Cindy still got infatuated by Sebastian’s charm in an instant.
Thus, the moment Sebastian and Cindy’s eyes met, Winter’s emotion ran rampant, and all of that ’make peace’ rationality she had in mind was thrown out of the window.
She was angry and hurt.
She was disappointed but couldn’t vent because there was no proof yet.
’How could my own sister betray me? I saved our Mom. The least she could do is not to covet my husband...’
Winter had suffered from insecurity ever since she married Sebastian because he kept talking her down, taunting her over and over.
No matter what she did or wore, he would find a way to ridicule her, to the point that she didn’t even dare to wear racy lingerie in front of him anymore.
He had no lust for her, and it made her wonder how ugly she was.
Arthur stopped at a red light and turned to face Winter, who was lamenting in the backseat. "Madam. Can you tell me what he did to you? Did he say something mean? Did he hurt you physically?"
Winter wanted to say that she had lost count of how many times Sebastian had said cruel things to her, but that was in her previous life.
In this life, Sebastian hadn’t said anything that hurt her heart yet, but that was because they had just gotten married two days ago. He would eventually shed his fake skin and reveal the true monster hiding beneath his handsome face.
Winter simply shook her head. "I don’t want to talk about it. I just feel... unwanted, that’s all."
"You shouldn’t feel that way, Madam. That man—that bastard is just a scum who doesn’t know your worth!" Arthur insisted. He looked dead serious, as if he was the one who had been offended.
Winter also noticed how tightly he gripped the steering wheel as if he was trying his best to hold his anger so she wouldn’t find him scary.
A scenario popped into Winter’s mind. She didn’t know if it was appropriate, but she had nothing to lose at this point.
Arthur was her most loyal bodyguard—or more than that, a friend who never left her until his unknown demise.
’So, it should be okay if I ask this, right?’ Winter pondered for a few seconds while staring straight into his deep eyes. ’I don’t think he’ll take it to heart. He’s still a professional, after all.’
"Answer me truthfully, Arthur. If I were single and asked you to marry me, would you marry me out of love?" Winter asked.
Arthur’s breath stiffened. He thought his heart was about to burst when he heard that question.
He was stunned that his brain seemed to freeze, unable to move. He couldn’t even blink.
All he could do was stare at his Madam with an empty look.
Winter sighed when he got no response from Arthur. ’What am I thinking, anyway? Was I this pathetic to fish for a compliment from my own subordinate? He already has someone he’s in love with. It’s not appropriate for me to ask that.’
Realizing her mistake, Winter quickly apologized. "You don’t need to answer it, Arthur. It was inappropriate for me to ask in the first place. Besides, I already know you have someone you love. My apologies."
"I will marry you."
"P—Pardon?" Winter thought she had misheard it. No, it was more like she couldn’t believe what she had just heard. "You... will marry me?"
Arthur suppressed his embarrassment, staring into her beautiful blue eyes, and repeated what he said in a firm and steady voice as if it was truly what he had in mind.
"I will marry you, not out of duty, but out of love."
