Chapter 35: Unwanted Company.

10am 2 days until the big Day

I woke up early to do the chores, but as usual, someone had already taken care of them. With nothing else to do, I headed outside to clean the cars.

Joyce was unusually nice to me this morning. She greeted me with a smile and even asked if I wanted something to eat. Since everyone was rarely home at the same time, I usually ate my meals in the living room. But today was different.

For some reason, everyone was gathered at the dining table. So I had to join.

That alone was enough to raise eyebrows. Faith and Abby exchanged confused glances, barely hiding their surprise. Esther, on the other hand, didn’t seem to care, but my uncle noticed the shift in tone.

"What’s been going on since I was gone?" he asked, eyeing me over his cup of coffee.

I nearly choked on my food.

"Uh... Nothing really," I replied, forcing a casual tone.

He raised an eyebrow, unconvinced. "Is that so?"

Joyce, still smiling, placed a plate in front of him. "Of course, dear. Everything’s been perfectly fine."

Her tone was sweet, almost too sweet... she was trying way too hard.

I focused on my plate, avoiding eye contact with anyone. But I could feel Faith’s gaze on me, like she wanted me to acknowledge her presence but I didn’t.

The awkward tension in the air was almost suffocating as I rushed through my food, hoping to escape the situation as soon as possible.

"Get dressed, we’ll be heading out to the port soon," Daniel said before leaving the table.

I quickly finished my food and headed to my room to get ready. I threw on a dark polo shirt, a pair of well-fitted jeans, and sturdy boots—something comfortable yet practical for a trip to the port. I grabbed my laptop and phone before stepping out, making my way back to the living room.

Whenever we visited the port, it usually meant one of two things—either a major shipment had just arrived, or there was an issue with customs or inventory that needed sorting. Given my skills as a computer geek, my uncle often brought me along to handle logistics, verify electronic records, or troubleshoot security and tracking systems whenever something seemed off.

As I entered the living room, I spotted Esther and Abby still sitting at the dining table, deep in conversation. The moment they saw me, they both shot me a look—one of those unreadable, knowing glances that sent a chill down my spine.

For the first time in my life, I felt genuinely afraid of seeing two women sitting together. Did they know? Did they somehow figure out that I’d slept with both of them? Was this the bad thing lurking around the corner, waiting to ruin everything?

Then, just as I was about to shake off the paranoia, they both burst into laughter.

My stomach twisted. Were they laughing at me? Did they know something I didn’t?

I wanted to turn around and ask—since I was on good terms with both of them, or at least I thought I was—but just as I was about to, I heard Daniel coming down the stairs. That was my cue to leave. Without a word, I walked straight outside.

Settling into the car and getting ready to drive off, I noticed my uncle was stalling. He kept glancing back at the house like he was waiting for someone. Maybe Joyce was coming along with us?

I sighed and glanced down at my phone to check the time. Just then, I heard the front door open. I looked up and—

God help me. It was Faith.

I blinked, then turned to my uncle with genuine confusion. "Is she coming with us?"

"Yes," he answered. "She mentioned she’d never been to the port before and wanted to check it out."

I scoffed before I could stop myself. "How convenient."

My uncle frowned. "What?"

I cleared my throat. "I said that makes sense." Obvious lie.

Faith’s suddenly interested in the port? Really? I tried so hard not to think she was going because of me but I couldn’t help it. Besides I’d already said I didn’t care what she did or thought about me but that thought went flying out my head when I looked at her again.

She wore a fitted white crop top, just snug enough to hint at what lay beneath, stopping right above the waistline of her high-waisted jeans. The denim hugged her hips in a way that was impossible to ignore, effortlessly casual but dangerous in how well it worked for her. A gold anklet shimmered against her skin as she stepped forward, paired with open-toe sandals that showed off perfectly polished toes.

A hint of gloss made her lips look almost too inviting, and when she adjusted her top absentmindedly, my throat went dry.

Not too revealing. Not too modest either, Just enough to make you stare and wonder if she knew exactly what she was doing.

Of course she did. Because damn she was sexy.

The drive was a quiet one... for me, at least. Daniel and Faith chatted non-stop about random things, their laughter filling the car while I stared out the window, lost in my thoughts. I tried hard not to look at her through the side mirrors because she was sitting behind me but we’d often catch each other staring.

When we finally pulled up to the port, I stepped out without a word, grabbing my laptop and heading toward one of the main administrative offices. If I had to be here, I might as well get some work done. And get my mind off Faith. The salty breeze hit my face as I walked, my mind already shifting to the tasks I could knock out.

"Where are you going?" Daniel’s voice called from behind me.

I turned, gesturing toward the office.

He chuckled, shaking his head. "We’re not here to work. Everyone’s on holiday."

I hesitated, feeling a little foolish. If I had just asked, I would’ve known. But I didn’t. I was too wrapped up in my own head. Overthinking.

Faith stood a few feet away, arms crossed, gazing out at the docked ships like she actually cared about the port. Like she had any real reason to be here.

How convenient.

My eyes went to work on her body, her crossed arms pushed against her boobs and the shape of her ass was just...

Snap out of it!!

"I need to go see someone," Daniel said, pulling his phone from his pocket. "Maybe show Faith around or something."

Without waiting for a response, he walked off, leaving me standing there with her. Just the two of us.

Oh what the actual fuck’
