The sky was overcast, with water dripping in the cave, hissing as it hit the torch on the wall.

The candle trembled in my palm, its flickering light licking the sleeping girl’s face. Her features were pale and gaunt, like a child bereft of warmth, curled up in a corner, her thick, curled eyelashes quivering—what kind of dream with blue skies and white clouds might she have in this hellish life?

One day, through the shadow of the flowers, I spied her features—pristine as jade, brilliant as sunshine. Like a delicate piece of porcelain.

Would it be delightful to clip Swallow’s wings and imprison her in my cage? Would it be satisfying to trap a beam of sunlight in a pitch-dark chamber where one cannot see one’s hand in front of their face?

Wax dripped onto my palm, hot and soft. I wanted to touch her cheek, to see her bright eyes open—what kind of look would she have for me?

I thought she must hate and detest me, as we embrace completely opposing lives and beliefs.

But in this moment, I felt an impulse.

I would light thousands of torches, making the cave as bright as day, and in her moment of terror, I would tear her clothes—yes, she would cry, scream, and struggle. Pinning her down, her silky skin intoxicating, like fine silk. Her trembling as pitiful and adorable as that of a wounded little animal.

Listen, she would curse me, hoarse and breathless: "Beast! Madman! Inhuman!"

I should show her what a madman really is. A madman would grasp her chin, leaving her unable to breathe, then kiss her cherry lips, almost biting off her tongue. A madman would knead her body to his heart’s content, shaping her cute breasts into various forms, ravaging those innocent reds.

He would fold and bend her trembling body, forcing her lovely form into all manner of shameless poses. He would do terrible things between her—widely spread legs, making her wet and sobbing inconsolably.

The sound of flesh slapping, slow at first but growing faster, the movements from light to hard, would then become gentle again. Torturing her over and over, making her a woman bewildered by desire. A single motion could make her tongue dance over the flames, completely under my control.

I would deliberately ignore her sobbing, her pitiful pleas.

I wanted to ruin her, for there’s only a thin line between the highest pleasure and the most intense pain. Whether I gave her one or the other, she would never forget me.

Never forget me.

She looked only at the light with her eyes—there would always be a corner for me, no matter how the years passed, how they washed people’s hearts over and over, there would always be a dark spot reserved for me, for it’s the root I planted in her.

—I really wanted to do it.

Wax dripped onto my palm, the flame gave a small leap, her eyelashes moved—I thought she might wake up.

Silently, I snuffed out the candle and walked out of the cave.

The clouds tore apart, and the golden sunlight poured down generously through the cracks. At that moment, I thought, surely the dream she just had contained no trace of me. Just like darkness and light, never to intersect.

The faint sunlight bathed the mountainside, the young man’s dark hair, the old folks’ deep wrinkles, the verdant leaves—sometimes, I even yearned for it to fall upon my shoulder, illuminating the abyss nurtured in my heart, where a greedy and ferocious Dragon lay.

But it was too weak to save, only enough to illuminate.

That was a beauty I never possessed.

I held the fragile soul fire in my hand, its faint pulsing, the heartbeat of her life. Looking back, her vibrant features turned to ashen gray, like a firefly without light, clinging to the edge of night, flying away.

I carried that flame of the soul with me always, and later, when someone asked what it was.

I thought for a long time, looking out from the dark cave to the bright world outside.

"That’s the best woman in the world," I said.
