Chapter 109: Chapter 109

Flashback

The weather in the city of London was cold, winter was coming and snow fell. It was beautiful and as tradition everywhere was decorated with Christmas lights.

I was waiting anxiously for the test result at the Carrington hospital. My mensuration had been a week late, and I wondered if the result would be how I had anticipated.

I did not delay it for even a moment and went directly to the hospital to get a blood test. The process of waiting for the result was torture.

A year and a half had passed since the haunting memory of a miscarriage, casting a shadow over our hopes. My heart, heavy with the weight of unfulfilled dreams.

I wanted to shame my grandfather, I had used all the power I had left to push Ethan to become a well known man in the society, and just one more step to go and he would have that position. If the business funding works, then all will be well. He would be busy and I would be alone.

Currently her gaze was on the screen glued to the laboratory.

"Daniella Steele..." Finally the doctor called out.

Finally, the moment arrived—the nurse approached with an envelope containing the test results. My hands trembled as I carefully tore it open, my eyes scanning the contents. The words on the paper carried a weight that seemed to echo through the silence of the room.

I was pregnant. I did not know how to react. The news swirled in my mind like a tempest, emotions crashing against the walls of my composure. I needed Ethan, my husband, the father of our unborn child.

With trembling hands, I reached for my phone to dial his number, a mix of excitement and nervousness flooding my senses. As the phone rang, anticipation hung in the air.

"Hello, who is this?" a woman’s voice answered, catching me off guard.

Confusion gripped me, and I stammered, "Uh, sorry. I must have dialed the wrong number." I quickly hung up, my heart racing.

Questions multiplied in my mind. Who was that woman? Why did she answer Ethan’s phone? I redialed, hoping for a different outcome, but it went straight to voicemail.

Panic set in as I replayed the scenario in my mind. Was there something Ethan hadn’t told me?

I looked at my phone carefully, indeed I have called Ethan but why was a woman answering the call instead?

I was stunned for a while but decided on getting home first. I packed my things and went into my car.

On my way home, the weather wasn’t nice. The snow was becoming too thick to see through. The road, once familiar, now felt like an endless expanse of white, each flake a silent question about the future.

The car moved cautiously through the winter storm, my thoughts racing faster than the wheels on the slippery road. The rhythmic hum of the engine was accompanied by the muffled sounds of snowflakes colliding with the windshield.

As the snowfall intensified, anxiety clawed at my chest. I needed to talk to Ethan, to understand the strange voice on the phone. The warmth of the car’s interior couldn’t dispel the chill that had settled within me.

With each passing mile, the journey became more treacherous. The world outside blurred into an indistinct whiteness, mirroring the uncertainty that now enveloped my life. I gripped the steering wheel tighter, willing the car to carry me home safely.

The familiar landmarks that usually guided me became obscured, and a feeling of isolation crept in. The headlights cut through the snowflakes like hesitant searchlights, illuminating the road ahead just enough to maintain a semblance of direction.

Finally, I reached home, the tires crunching on the icy driveway. The warmth of the house offered a stark contrast to the cold reality outside. I rushed inside, my heart pounding, and called Ethan again, hoping for an explanation.

The phone rang, but again, Ethan’s familiar voice didn’t answer. Instead, the same woman picked up, her tone colder than the winter wind. "Who is this, and why are you calling my husband?"

Confusion and shock held me in a vice grip. My mind raced, trying to make sense of the situation. I managed to utter, "Your husband? I’m his wife."

A chilling silence followed before she scoffed, "Wife? That’s rich. Ethan and I are happily married. Don’t bother him again." The line went dead, leaving me standing there, phone in hand, as the gravity of the situation sank in.

Ethan would not dare cheat on me, right? He had been so busy but I assumed because the company was going international, he was going to get the title of richest man in the city soon...he wouldn’t cheat on me...right?

My heart was beating fast against my chest. The snow outside mirrored the icy turmoil within me as I reached into my bag and pulled out the tracker I had discreetly installed on Ethan’s phone. Fingers trembling, I activated it, following the blinking dot that represented him.

The car glided through the snowy streets, the cold exterior contrasting with the heat of my rising anxiety. I tried to convince myself that there was a reasonable explanation, that my trust in Ethan wasn’t misplaced.

As I pulled up in front of a house, the tracker indicated that Ethan was inside. The voice on the phone, the strange home, all led me here. A sense of dread enveloped me, but I couldn’t turn back now.

Banging on the door, a maid answered, asking who I was looking for. Ignoring her, I pushed past and followed the tracker until I reached a room. The door was slightly ajar, and I hesitated for a moment before pushing it open.

My heart sank as I saw Ethan, wearing his clothes, and a lady in a robe putting on makeup. The realization hit me like a ton of bricks – it was Aurora, my own sister.

"Ethan, what is this?" I stammered, my voice barely audible over the whirlwind of emotions.

Aurora, seemingly unfazed, smirked. "Oh, sweet sister, you were never meant to find out."

The room felt suffocating as accusations and denials hung in the air. The weight of betrayal pressed against my chest, making it hard to breathe.
