Chapter 59: All At Peak
Chapter 59: All At Peak
A certain memory popped into his head that he once had with his big brother. His eyes moistened unknowingly in that brief instant of peace and tranquility. His family was an average one with many financial problems, and his older brother always carried the weight of the family.
His brother once expressed his desire for skydiving. Of course, considering their financial situation, it was only a fantasy for them. Valtar also had that desire in his heart; in fact, he never even dared to say it. After all, he was already a big burden in his family. There’s no need to unnecessarily express your desires for something that is simply not possible.
The wind furiously rushed onto his body as he thought about his brother and those he left behind. For some unknown reason an even greater pain threatened to burst forth from his entire being. He gritted his teeth and closed his eyes for a moment. When he opened his eyes just a moment later his expression became chillingly indifferent and resolute. He dived down.
Then the following events happened.
Valtar sighed as he looked into the eyes of the possessed Shadow Snake. He ordered a ghostbound to cut an arm of the Large Gorilla, he was feeling hungry and weak. He needed some food as well as some sleep.
He jumped on top of it and commanded the ghostbounds to follow him, they all went in the direction they previously were. It was not good to rest in an open area. It’s best to take some rest in a place covered with trees.
After entering that area, Valtar ordered the ghostbounds to search for a small cave-like structure where he could have some peaceful sleep. To his luck, one of them found one and cleared the cave in which some stray shadow wolves lay.
He cleared the cave some more to his liking and with a lot of effort ignited a small fire. He alone was sitting in front of the fire with a slight smile while the ghostbounds with their glowing red eyes and dead expressions simply stared at the fire without even moving their muscle a bit.
Valtar grimaced seeing this, if someone were to see this chillingly creepy moment, they would think this was a horror story rather than a fantasy, lol.
He ordered the ghostbounds to cut the meat of the gorilla into small pieces as for the structure in which the meat would be grilled, he had to make it himself since it was something too complex for the ghostbounds to understand.
After 30 minutes of trial and failure, he was able to make a stone age meat griller. This is the first time he even remotely tried making something like this, so despite his strength, it did not help him in making small utility tools like this.
After that, Valtar started grilling the meat on top of the fire by skewering the meat onto the sticks and then laying them on top of the fire. The damn gorilla’s meat was truly tough as it took Valtar more than an hour to make them soft enough to be even edible. Even then it was not enough so another 30 minutes passed in silently grilling the meat.
Thankfully the ghostbounds brought a lot of dry wood for him to burn and Zolthar was standing guard outside since the smell of such a high level beasts meat naturally attracted the attention of many stray beasts but he was enough to take care of them all without a sweat. The Ghostbounds were also close to recovering from their weakened state.
Valtar brought the skewer close to his mouth and bit into the piece of meat. He was surprised by how good it tasted. He was quite afraid of how it would turn out, thankfully lady luck favored him. Though the meat still tasted quite bland since there was no spice to use or even salt per se, only the pure grilled meat, even then it was a lot better than if a slice of normal meat were to be grilled without anything.
After eating enough to fill his stomach properly. He turned off the fire and started making a makeshift bed with whatever that could be found. Even then, it could hardly be called a comfortable bed. But his body was even harder than steel at this point so even the uncomfortable bed felt quite comfortable to him for some reason.
The ghostbounds all stood guard outside even the large snake. Time passed, night came, the sun rose, and the day passed. Slowly 3 days passed yet there was no sign of Valtar waking up. He continued to sleep. Which made sense in a way, From the moment he went with the warriors of the Eastern tribe at that time, he did not properly get to rest.
Only occasional sleep of 1-2 hours is what he got in between whenever he got the chance. If not for the fact that he had evolved to higher levels constantly, it was naturally impossible for him to even do such a thing. But after reaching his current level, a being needed much less sleep or food in general. It had not been more than 10 days in total till he first arrived in the hidden forest.
Eventually, another day passed as well, by this time the Ghostbound Snake was getting agitated, unlike the emotionless ones it had good intelligence and understanding. So, it knew that the master was not supposed to sleep like a dead for so long. It eventually hissed slightly towards Zolthar, it was the only one apart from the snake with some intelligence. The Snake made some strange noise towards it and the ghostbound of the first elder nodded emotionlessly.
The Snake basically asked Zolthar to check on their master if something was wrong or if he could be woken up somehow. Zolthar went inside, he bent down where his master was sleeping and stared at him with his dead blood red eyes but sensed nothing wrong in particular.
However, soon Valtar’s mouth twitched slightly, he rolled his body from one way to another in his sleep as if trying to find a more comfortable position. Then he stretched his hands and legs still lying down. His eyes suddenly opened, but he saw an old-looking dark elf with blood-red eyes looking at him with a deadpan expression. He slightly jumped back.
Then his eyes darted everywhere like a frightened kitty, then his mouth opened slightly as if understanding the situation. An inaudible sigh escaped from his lips and his expression went from confusion, guilt, sorrow, pain, horror, disbelief then finally acceptance.
If anyone were to see this they would have understood that Valtar after waking from a 4-day long sleep, in his subconscious perhaps thought that all of it was just a dream. The reluctance to accept the truth. From his mother’s death to his suicide, to his transmigration then being trapped in this forest and so much killing and hardship as well as this overwhelming longing for Elmyra even when she’s dead. It was enough to drive someone mad.
All of it was just too much for him. Despite the intense pain of countless raging emotions wreaking havoc within him, no tears fell from his eyes as he simply accepted the truth. There was no choice after all. He could only move forward. With a heavy sigh, all of his emotions disappeared like a gentle breeze.
He got up and asked the system, "How long? How long was I asleep?"
[4 days.]
He was silent for a moment as he did not expect to sleep for so many days. On the bright side though Valtar felt extremely fresh. His mind was absolutely clear and filled with clarity. Even the air he took in felt extremely fresh and blissful.
He went outside, and with a water source nearby he took a shower. In the meantime ordered the ghostbounds to hunt some wild animals. After his shower was done, he cooked the meat of the beast, the gorilla’s arm was eaten by the snake after Valtar cooked a small part of it. It would’ve rotted anyway in 4 days. He ate the grilled meat silently.
He started thinking about the next thing, the one Dyona told him about. The Shadow Stealer. There is only one place left in the western section where the ’Shadow Stealer’ could be. The mountain, the shadow mountain in the western corner.
From the corner of his eyes, Valtar glanced at the tall and ominous-looking mountain that stood tall in the far corner. Black clouds were covering the top of the mountain, not letting a single ray of sunlight shine through it.
The longer he stared towards the mountain, the more he felt something calling him towards it. He moved his eyes away from it with some reluctance, Valtar was thinking silently. If it is something with a powerful shadow-type ability, what could be his trump cards against it? Even the queen had an apprehensive look when talking about it.
However, despite racking his brain non-stop there is no way for him to know about the truth. After he was done eating his food. He stood up and looked around at his ghostbounds. A total of 39 ghostbounds, 1 pathwalker snake, 4 shadow gorillas on third-stage, 4 shadow tigers on third-stage, 10 third-stage dark elves and 20 second-stage dark elves. All of them are at the peak of their stages respectively. The ghostbounds weren’t simply lazing around all day while he was sleeping.
A number of them continued to hunt outside to collect cores from beasts of various stages to reach the peak of that stage. Thus now all of them were even stronger than before. He could hope his minions would be of good use in this fight.
