Chapter 296: Farewell

When they arrived at the ground floor, a group of doctors and nurses was already waiting for them with a wheeled stretcher. As soon as he placed his wife on the stretcher, they pushed her into the emergency room.

Before he could rush into the room, the nurse stopped him, "President Feng, please wait here."

Being held back by Wei Zheming, Feng Zhexuan could only watch as his wife disappeared into the room with the door closing behind her. The moment the door closed, his vision darkened, and he collapsed to the ground.

"Zhexuan!" Wei Zheming was startled when he saw his friend suddenly faint.

"Doctor, come here quickly!" he shouted as he carried him on his back.

While the two were rushed into the emergency room, Grandpa Feng and Jin Rongsan received the news and hurried to the hospital. They decided not to inform Jin Zhiwen, as he couldn’t handle any emotional strain at the moment.

By the time they arrived, both Feng Zhexuan and Yan Yuling had been moved to a VVIP room. At Wei Zheming’s request, they shared the same room, with the hospital arranging two beds side by side for them.

Lying pale on the bed, Feng Zhexuan stared blankly at the ceiling until the door suddenly opened. Turning his head, he saw his grandfather enter with Jin Rongsan.

Meeting his grandfather’s worried gaze, he managed a faint smile and said, "Grandpa, why are you here? Did Zheming tell you what happened?"

Taking his grandson’s hand, Grandpa Feng’s expression turned stern as he scolded, "Zhexuan, how could you be so reckless? You nearly lost your life!"

"I’m sorry for making you worry, Grandpa. But I couldn’t just sit back when I knew my wife was in danger," Feng Zhexuan said softly.

"You are really—"

Before Grandpa Feng could finish his words, Jin Rongsan patted his shoulder and interjected, "Old Feng, what’s done is done. There is no point in scolding him now. Let him rest."

Sighing heavily, Grandpa Feng looked at the IV drip before saying, "You haven’t rested properly for days. Try to get some sleep. Grandpa will wait here and inform the nurse when your IV is done."

"Mmhmm," Feng Zhexuan nodded weakly and closed his eyes.

He tried to get some sleep, though sleep didn’t come easily. The memory of Gu Jianci’s sacrifice replayed vividly in his mind every time he closed his eyes. He knew clearly that without Gu Jianci’s intervention, they would never be able to stop Jian Yuan or rescue his wife.

From Jian Yuan’s words and his deteriorating state, it was clear that the second personality was fading. Despite the extreme measures Gu Jianci took at that time, he managed to ensure that Jian Yuan could no longer harm anyone—especially Yan Yuling.

Even with this understanding, Feng Zhexuan struggled to accept Gu Jianci’s actions. He was selfish as he did not want his wife to carry the trauma of witnessing her friend’s ultimate sacrifice.

At the same time, he was grateful—and jealous. Grateful that Gu Jianci saved his wife, yet jealous that his memory would forever hold a special place in her heart, casting a shadow over their relationship in the future.

As these conflicting emotions churned in his head, he drifted off into a restless sleep.

In his dream, he found himself standing outside an abandoned warehouse. Recognizing the place, dread filled him—this was the nightmare that had haunted him countless times for more than fifteen years.

Summoning his courage, he took a deep breath and walked into the abandoned building. Near the entrance, he spotted two children peeking through the entrance. His steps stopped as the children turned to face him.

When he saw the girl’s face, he murmured, "Xing Xiayan."

The girl smiled brightly at him and said, "Brother Zhexuan, thank you. I’m free now. I can finally leave this place."

Waving at him, she turned around and ran toward a vast grassland as her figure fading into the horizon. Watching her left while laughing, Feng Zhexuan felt a mixture of relief and sorrow in his heart.

When he turned back, the boy had transformed into two young men—Gu Jianci and Jian Yuan.

Jian Yuan sneered as he looked at him with his hands in his pockets. He raised his eyebrows and said arrogantly, "Feng Zhexuan, even if I have lost this time, don’t think I will forgive you if you ever make Xiao Ling’er cry."

After he said these words, he paused for a moment before his tone softened as he added, "What happened back then wasn’t your or Xiao Ling’er’s fault. Before I go, tell Xiao Ling’er I’m sorry. I hurt her because of my selfishness, but I truly loved her. I hope she can forgive me and be happy."

As the dark sky above them brightened, Jian Yuan glanced upward and chuckled, "Heh, who would have thought I would end up there, after everything I have done?"

Turning to Feng Zhexuan, he added with a faint smile, "Thanks for being my friend, Joker. Farewell."

Before Feng Zhexuan could respond to his words, Jian Yuan disappeared into the light. Gu Jianci remained as he watched his brother disappear. His expression is calm but bittersweet.

In the silence, Gu Jianci said quietly, "They always said I wasn’t real. That I am just a fragment of my brother. But Yuling–she saw me as a person. She treated me as myself. I wanted to stay by her side forever, but fate had other plans."

When he finished his words, he let out a long sigh and said, "I used to wish she would always remember me. Now, I just hope she forgets everything about me and lives a happy life."

As his form began to fade, Gu Jianci’s voice grew hoarse, "Feng Zhexuan, I was jealous of you. I hated you for taking her from me. But I’m also relieved—because I know you will protect and take care of her. Tell her I’m sorry for everything... and thank you for teaching me what love is."
