Chapter 274: Good News Or Bad News?
"Madam," he said with a helpless smile, "this is a request from President Feng. He insisted on running tests to ensure your health. If you refuse, I will be in trouble."
Knowing her husband’s stubborn nature, Yan Yuling sighed and said, "Alright then."
The moment she agreed, Wei Zheming’s lips curved into a slight smile. Gesturing to the nurse to lead the way, he added, "Madam, your father has been moved to the ICU. After the tests, I will try to arrange for you to see him.
"For now, however, you won’t be able to visit him directly because his condition is weak, and he is susceptible to infections. You will only be able to see him through the glass window instead."
Yan Yuling nodded and replied, "Thank you, Assistant Wei. I understand."
The tests were straightforward—a small tube of blood was drawn, and she was asked to provide a urine sample. She was puzzled by the latter but complied, trusting the professionals to do their job.
Once finished, she found Wei Zheming on the phone and waited for him to wrap up. When he hung up, she approached him and asked, "Assistant Wei, when can I visit my father?"
Initially, Wei Zheming had planned to take her to see her father right away, but noticing how pale she looked, he reconsidered. Her father wouldn’t wake up for a few days, and she might be pregnant. Rest was a priority for her right now.
After considering the pros and cons, he said, "Madam, you will be able to visit in a few days. For now, how about I take you home? You should rest and recover your energy. If your father sees you looking this pale, he will worry."
Thinking his suggestion made sense, Yan Yuling agreed readily, "Okay."
At this time, she had forgotten the snacks she ordered before and followed Wei Zheming towards the hospital entrance. In the end, the snacks were shared among the nurses.
As he drove her back to Feng Zhexuan’s house in the capital, Wei Zheming reflected on how rare it was for a woman to remain so sensible after marrying the wealthiest man in the country. Yet, given her difficult childhood experiences, it was understandable.
At the same time, his thoughts drifted to someone else in Haicheng—his "little fox." He had been so busy since arriving in the capital that he hadn’t had time to check on her. So, he wondered if she had eaten or taken her medicine.
Meanwhile, that very person was devouring food like she hadn’t eaten in days. Sitting on a hospital bed, she finished a bowl of fish balls in mere bites.
A middle-aged woman watching her shook her head with amusement and reminded her, "Slow down. No one is going to snatch your food."
Xiao Wu swallowed the last bite and gave her a thumbs-up while saying, "Aunty Wei, your cooking has improved again! These fish balls are so delicious—springy and full of flavor. I wish I could eat them every day!"
The older woman laughed with joy lighting her eyes. She patted her hand and said dotingly, "You are always sweet-talking me. If you really want to eat my cooking every day, why not become my daughter-in-law? As long as you agree, I will cook for you daily, and all you will have to do is enjoy life."
Xiao Wu blinked in surprise while her cheeks were reddening. She lowered her head and said, "Aunty, that’s not something I can decide on my own, is it? My senior brother only sees me as a sister. It’s impossible between us."
After a moment of hesitation, she asked, "How about you take me as your foster daughter instead?"
"That way, you would still be my mom, and I would be your cute little cotton-padded jacket!" she added with a grin.
Wei Zheming’s mother tapped her nose affectionately and said, "If you are unwilling to be my daughter-in-law, then being my foster daughter will do. Aunty has watched you grow up, after all. In my heart, you have always been my daughter."
"But formalities can’t be skipped. Once you are discharged from the hospital, I will inform Zheming, and we will have a family dinner. You can serve tea to me and your uncle, and the formality will be complete," she added with a smile.
Though Xiao Wu felt a pang of sadness at the idea, she knew her worth. For someone as brilliant as Wei Zheming, she could never be more than a sister to him.
Thinking from another perspective, the relationship between siblings was forever, while romantic relationships could end. Even marriages could fall apart. Perhaps, being that person’s sister wasn’t so bad after all.
After she made up her mind, Xiao Wu smiled at Mother Wei and said, "Then, I should call you Mom from now on."
The moment Mother Wei heard this, her eyes lit up, and she beamed, "Good! I have wanted a daughter for a long time. Now, my wish is finally fulfilled."
"Good daughter, finish your meal. Mom will peel an apple for you," she added dotingly.
Xiao Wu grinned at her words and said, "Thank you, Mom!"
Not long after their conversation, Xiao Wu’s phone rang. Seeing the caller’s name, Mother Wei’s eyes lit up, and she said, "Xiao Wu, why don’t you pick up your call?"
Looking at her phone, Xiao Wu replied casually, "Mom, help me pick it up."
"Okay," Mother Wei nodded and answered the call.
As soon as the call connected, her son’s cold voice, now filled with gentleness, came through.
"Xiao Wu, how are you doing? Do you still have a headache? Have you taken your medicine and eaten on time?"
Hearing her son asking so many questions at once, Mother Wei smiled and said, "Ah Ming, it’s me. Xiao Wu is eating and can’t pick up the phone right now."
After finishing her sentence, she put the phone on speaker and said, "Ah Ming, we have good news for you."
Wei Zheming frowned at his mother’s tone and asked suspiciously, "What news?"
