Chapter 69: Chapter 69: Calamity Descends

"Anyway, please take a look at today’s loot. Can you quote the prices for all these?"

Ryuzen placed 30 E-Grade Beast Cores on the table. He had left the rest for Grakar to consume.

He wouldn’t have sold them either—

but he needed to buy some gear for his human form. Who knew what kind of problems he might run into during the upcoming wave? He had to be prepared.

Versalon raised an eyebrow. "Huh? You managed to gather this many E-Grade Monster Cores?" His eyes narrowed with suspicion.

"Tell me, Ryu... You’re not really a newbie hunter, right?"

Ryuzen’s heart skipped a beat, but he remained calm and asked,

"So what if I’m not? Are you going to kick me out of your house?"

Versalon let out a small laugh in response. "Haha... How would I dare? You know my little secret, after all. Anyway, wait a few minutes. Let me calculate the price."

He spoke while examining the cores quietly, though it was clear he was now a bit more alert about his mysterious tenant named Ryuzen.

Ryu waited patiently, curiously observing the glowing monster cores and the nearby display of Mana Crystals.

Seeing those shimmering crystals reminded him of the pile he had stored inside the Fusion Lab.

So, when Versalon finally handed him around 2,600 silver coins (26 gold coins), Ryu asked,

"Mr. Landlord, how much does one F-grade Mana Crystal cost?"

Versalon paused, then replied while adjusting the coins in a drawer,

"One F-grade Mana Crystal? The average market price ranges between 80 to 120 silver coins, depending on purity and where you sell it. Around here, I usually buy them for 105 silver each, but the Hunter Association might offer slightly more—if you’re a registered member in good standing."

He glanced up at Ryuzen with a thoughtful expression.

"Why do you ask? Planning to sell some?"

Ryuzen simply gave a faint smile and said,

"Just curious about what are they used for?"

But deep down, his thoughts were racing.

If one F-grade Mana Crystal goes for nearly 100 silver... and I have over 300 of them in storage...

That was a big fortune.

Versalon leaned back slightly, folding his arms. "That’s a good question. Mana Crystals might look small, but their demand never drops. Let me break it down."

He gestured toward a nearby shelf filled with trinkets, potions, and glowing stones.

"F-grade Mana Crystals are the foundation of low-tier magical energy sources. They’re used in a lot of things like equipment recharging, alchemy, crafting enchantments, even low-level magical weapons."

He tapped a small glowing lamp nearby.

"See this lamp? It runs entirely on Mana Crystals. Same with teleportation scrolls, low-tier spell rings, basic shield arrays... they all need a constant source of condensed mana to function."

"I see... Now I understand. Thank you for the explanation." he bowed slightly, while Versalon shrugged.

"Don’t mention it. I am glad to help. Maybe one day, I will have to rely on you to protect my family when I am not around." he said jokingly.

Ryuzen blinked at the comment, then gave a light chuckle. "Mr Versalon, You’re already trusting me that much?"

Versalon smiled faintly but his eyes were serious. "You live under my roof, you share a table with my daughter and wife. You may not realize it, but that makes you part of our circle—whether you like it or not."

There was a brief pause before he added in a calmer tone, "Besides, I’ve seen how Venus talks about you when you’re not around. You’re not just some tenant to her, you know."

Ryuzen looked away, a small frown forming on his face as he rubbed the back of his neck.

"Mr Landlord, I don’t know what kind of future I’ll have. But if that day ever comes, I’ll do everything I can to protect them. You have my word."

Versalon nodded in approval. "That’s all I can ask for. But of course, don’t ever think of crossing the line of friendship with my precious daughter, understand?"

Ryuzen gave him a mischievous grin. "Hehe... When you’re not there to stop me, how can I not?"

"You rascal!"

Before Versalon could reach across the counter, Ryu was already halfway to the door, laughing.

But just as he stepped outside, he glanced over his shoulder and said with an unusually serious tone, "Mr. Landlord, it would be best if you head home early today."

Versalon blinked. "Huh? What’s with that sudden advice?"

But Ryu only gave a playful wave and disappeared into the street.

Left alone, Versalon frowned and muttered under his breath, "What did that rascal mean by that?"

A strange sense of unease crept into his chest.

---

Ryu was hurriedly making his way toward Rick’s Weaponsmith shop. Another wave was coming. So he needed to be prepared.

He didn’t know when or how they spawned, but he could sense it. It was close very close.

That’s why he’d warned Mr. Versalon earlier. Whether the man listened or not, that was his choice.

Still, Ryu believed it would be like the last one. Hunters would hold the line, the defensive formations would kick in, and everyone would survive. So, he wasn’t too worried.

But—

As he ran along the stone-paved road, suddenly the light began to fade. The once-clear sky darkened as if a giant curtain had been pulled across it. Thick clouds gathered unnaturally fast, swirling in chaotic motion, charged with lightning that crackled violently without release.

People all around him stopped in their tracks, heads tilting up in unison.

"Huh! Why did it suddenly got dark?" An elderly woman muttered in confusion and unease.

The air became heavy. Everything felt wrong.

Ryu’s instincts suddenly screamed.

But before he could react, it happened.

"RUUUUMBBBBBBLLLLLLLE!"

"CRRRREEEAAAACCCKKK!"

A world-shaking roar of thunder echoed across the land, loud enough to silence even thought.

Ryu’s pupils dilated. His heart skipped. His legs faltered as an ancient, primal terror surged up from deep within. Something deep in his mind told him:

Run.

High above, the Vast sky tore apart.

Then, one by one crimson portals manifested across the world. Some were the size of carriages. Others the size of fortresses. And then—there were those beyond reason. Colossal Gates.

The Colossal Gates were almost 1 km in length.

It sparked expression of aw within Ryu. But fear came from the entity coming through that gate.

A leg.

Just a single leg stepped out.

The leg was crimson in color, layered with muscle and bone that looked more demonic than flesh. In addition, black demonic patterns pulsed with giant runic marks that shimmered with wicked energy.

"RUMBLE!"

The sky itself bent around it. Thunder cracked around it like a herald of doom.

Ryu’s knees buckled.

Just what in the hell was this thing?

His mind screamed for answers.

But his soul whispered one word.

Calamity.
