Chapter 68: "Don’t worry... it wouldn’t be the first time,"

.

Zhu Rong had lived a long life, several times longer than a normal mortal’s.

And despite the state of his body at that time, he still managed to live for five centuries.

A remarkable feat in itself, considering even cultivators far stronger than him rarely reached such an age, as they were constantly surrounded by danger and conflict.

Over that long span of time, he had traveled across countless places on the continent, meeting all kinds of people, from all races.

Yet despite all that, only a handful of beings had ever managed to leave a deep impression on him.

And one of those beings was standing right before him now.

Lin Xian,

a being he never thought he’d encounter in his lifetime.

Someone who had left a lasting mark on the entire history of the Hanxu continent,

revered by many, and feared by many others.

She had been granted many titles throughout the ages,

but there was one known to all:

the Ancestress of the Elves.

She was the oldest member of the elven race, the very first elf to ever reach the peak of the mortal world and ascend to the higher realms.

The last time anyone had heard anything about her was when she finally left this world,

and that had happened more than a hundred thousand years ago.

And now, he found himself standing before that legendary figure,

who, upon hearing his voice, turned her gaze toward him.

Contrary to what one might expect from such an ancient being,

the Ancestress of the Elves had a small, slender frame, almost delicate,

like that of a young girl yet to be touched by the weight of the world.

She wore a white, shoulderless robe that draped elegantly around her figure,

cinched at the waist with a brown belt embedded with crystals.

Above her head hovered a faint halo, glowing softly in a pale yellow hue,

almost like a deity descended to earth.

Long golden hair flowed like silk down her back, and her emerald eyes, deep and vivid,

seemed to hold secrets forgotten by time itself.

She looked at the human in front of her with a mix of confusion and curiosity.

For a moment, time seemed to stand still as she studied Zhu Rong’s figure.

After that initial exchange of glances, neither of them spoke.

She simply kept examining him in silence, until finally, she broke it.

"Well, this is unexpected," she said, her voice calm yet clearly intrigued.

"Of all the things I thought I might see upon awakening, a human certainly wasn’t one of them,

let alone one carrying that distinct mark..."

Her eyes narrowed slightly, as if she’d seen something strange.

Zhu Rong wasn’t sure what she meant by that last part, but decided to let it slide.

Seeing that she’d begun to recover somewhat from her long slumber,

he finally decided to speak.

"It looks like you’ve managed to stabilize your current consciousness.

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Zhu Rong,

a member of the human race," he said, offering a respectful nod before continuing,

"and also the master of the person to whom this space of consciousness belongs."

Upon hearing his words, a flicker of interest flashed through the girl’s eyes,

but along with it, another emotion briefly surfaced, only to vanish just as quickly.

"I’m sure you have a lot of questions, and I’ll be glad to answer them," he said.

"But before that, I think you should take a look at this."

He lifted his right hand and placed two fingers against his own forehead.

Lin Xian didn’t seem alarmed by the gesture.

She simply watched calmly as a faint yellow glow enveloped his fingers.

A moment later, he pulled his hand back,

And with it, something else came free, a small glowing orb, which floated gently in midair.

Zhu Rong exhaled slowly, calming his thoughts, then made a simple movement with his fingers,

sending the floating orb toward the ancient elf.

She reached out and took it without hesitation, as if already knowing what it was.

She stared at it for a moment, then lightly clenched her hand, causing the orb to burst.

It scattered into glowing particles that converged upon her forehead.

Her eyes began to shimmer faintly,

and for a few seconds, she seemed lost in thought.

Zhu Rong said nothing, waiting patiently.

And he didn’t have to wait long.

Soon, Lin Xian returned to herself.

But this time, her expression wasn’t neutral, it had turned serious.

She now looked at Zhu Rong with what could only be described as a complicated gaze.

Eventually, she let out a sigh and said, with a tired voice,

"Haa... nothing ever goes according to plan, does it?" she said, seemingly complaining about something.

Then her eyes focused on him again, and she spoke once more.

"Well, it seems like you already have an of this girl’s situation.

So you should also know, her life won’t be easy anymore,

not now that you’ve awakened the fragment of my consciousness."

She stared at Zhu Rong, searching for something in his expression.

Zhu Rong, as if understanding what she meant, responded with a weary smile,

"Well, as they say... desperate times call for desperate measures.

Don’t worry, I’ll take care of her," he said, shaking his head slightly.

"But it’s fine this way too. You saw my memories, didn’t you?

We don’t have much time. If I leave things the way they are, history will repeat itself, and I doubt either of you wants that happening again."

he said with a serious expression as a series of unpleasant memories came to his mind.

Lin Xian said nothing, seeming lost in her own thoughts.

Finally, she sighed and said,

"Very well. Since I’m already here, I’ll play my part.

But let me make one thing clear,

when the time comes, don’t count on me for help."

As she spoke, a bluish light began to glow faintly from her body,

causing the halo above her head to shine brighter.

Zhu Rong saw this and gave a faint smile as his spiritual form began to break apart.

"Don’t worry... it wouldn’t be the first time," he said.

And with that, his spiritual presence vanished,

leaving only the ancient elf behind.

She stared at the spot where he disappeared, clearly deep in thought,

as the light from her halo intensified with each passing second.

She turned her gaze in a certain direction and murmured,

"To think she’d go this far... all for this boy.

Seriously, what in the world is happening up there?"

As she spoke, the space beneath her feet suddenly lit up, and a series of beams of light burst into existence,

intertwining wildly until they formed a massive sigil.

Lin Xian looked at the glowing formation with a blank expression.

Then she raised her hand and whispered words in an unknown tongue.

The glowing formation reacted instantly,

its outer rings began to vanish, dissolving into multicolored particles

that sank into the void below, fusing into the depths.

"Well then...

Let’s see what you’re planning to do,"

she said, her voice echoing softly into the emptiness of the spiritual consciousness realm.
