Chapter 783: Chapter 783: The Diary Begins to Break (Two-In-One Mega Chapter, Seeking Monthly Pass)
Bang—
Accompanied by the sound of a taut rope snapping, the corpse of the long-haired man that had just been hanging in the air fell from the sky.
"Ah!!!!"
He glanced at He Ao, let out a roar, and charged toward He Ao.
His breath had weakened a lot compared to when he had attacked He Ao before, now only at the standard level of an ordinary C-level.
He Ao held his sword horizontally in front of his chest, stepped forward, and with a single swing of his sword, passed by the long-haired man’s corpse.
The long-haired man’s corpse continued several meters forward due to inertia, then disintegrated while running, splitting in two, and fell to the ground.
The instant it touched the ground, his remains melted and blended into the crimson that nearly covered the entire room.
The stench of blood in the air thickened, and some form of invisible pressure spread throughout the room.
Bang bang bang—
Before He Ao’s figure had stabilized, the sound of ropes breaking rang out again, and several corpses fell from the sky, charging at He Ao.
Walking through the crimson bloodstains, He Ao’s swordplay was swift as a swallow; within a few passes, he had cut all these corpses to pieces.
The strength demonstrated by these corpses was not strong, far from that of the long-haired man’s corpse, just barely around C-level.
Several fragmented corpses hit the crimson floor and quickly melted into it, enriching the bloodstains on the ground and the scent of blood in the air.
Bang bang bang—
The ropes hanging from the sky continued to snap.
Looking at the dozen or so corpses in front of him, He Ao slightly furrowed his brow.
Although these corpses were not particularly strong, there were too many of them.
He grasped the knight’s sword and looked at the diary in his hand.
This time, the diary was still written in crimson ink, with a phrase:
[Brother said he was going to sell the watch left by mom and dad, he hasn’t come home in a long time, I’m so hungry, home isn’t safe anymore.]
He Ao put away the diary, lifted his head, and looked at the corpses that were already rushing toward him. He swung a flourish with the knight’s sword in his hand, slashing the corpses into pieces.
Home isn’t safe anymore.
He charged toward a corpse at the side, raised his sword, and directly cut the corpse in two, then turned and continued forward, cutting down those solitary corpses.
While battling with the corpses, he also observed the entire layout of the hall.
Following the bloody changes that had just occurred, all the beautiful decorations in the hall had disappeared, turned into old walls splattered with bloodstains.
The room contained only one piece of furniture, the storage cabinet that He Ao had just emerged from. Besides that, there were walls on all sides, no doors, no windows.
This was an ’entirely sealed’ room.
He Ao’s brow furrowed slightly.
The diary said that home wasn’t safe anymore. Based on previous experiences, the exit this time should be one that leads ’out of the home.’
But the hall was surrounded by walls on all sides; there was no place to leave.
He subtly shifted positions, cutting down a corpse by his side while glancing at the serene storage cabinet.
Could that storage cabinet possibly connect to other spaces, serving as a passage to leave?
Wrong.
He lifted his sword and cut down the second-to-last corpse in front of him, then took another look at the surroundings.
During the times when ’home was safe’ in previous encounters, he had escaped by hiding inside a piece of furniture.
That meant the space within the furniture was still considered ’home.’
Now that ’home isn’t safe anymore,’ the correct path must be a ’channel’ that leads out of the home.
The last corpse rushed at him from the side, swinging its claws, trying to shred the flesh on He Ao’s body. He Ao sidestepped, continuing to maneuver through the blood-red room.
The corpse followed his footsteps, attempting to strike him, but he dodged every attack.
The fragments of corpses that melted into the crimson on the ground made the air increasingly thick with the scent of blood, as if nurturing something.
However, the intensification of the blood stench soon halted, stuck at that point.
The corpses hanging in the sky swayed as if blown by a gentle breeze, but the transformation of the room stopped there.
He Ao glanced at the last chasing corpse behind him and continued to dodge its assaults.
Apparently, his guess was correct.
After the battles with the first two waves, he easily discerned a pattern: whenever a wave of corpses was exterminated, the room would immediately release more corpses, giving rise to a new ’Tide of Corpses.’
At the same time, the corpses just killed would be absorbed by the room, propelling some new transformation.
Therefore, this time He Ao deliberately left the weakest ’corpse’ unkilled.
Because this wave of corpses hadn’t been completely eradicated, no new corpses descended.
The room’s rule mechanism was ’stuck’ in place.
Of course, He Ao had also noticed the ’remedial’ measures of this rule mechanism.
That is, the last corpse-monster was growing stronger over time.
If He Ao did not kill it, sooner or later it would become strong enough that he couldn’t dodge or even resist it, forcing He Ao to confront it head-on.
If He Ao was killed by this monster, everything would end; if He Ao killed this monster, a new ’Tide of Corpses’ would begin.
Theoretically, this mechanism seemed invincible.
But in reality, the monster needed time to grow stronger, and this time was He Ao’s opportunity to find a way out of the room.
While evading the attacks of the increasingly strong corpses, He Ao’s gaze swept over the room again, his thoughts flickering rapidly.
Under normal circumstances, the main way out of a room is a ’door’.
But this room had no ’doors,’ not even the secondary exit of a ’window’.
So how could he leave this room?
He Ao’s eye was drawn to the only ’exception’ remaining in the entire room.
The two pig monsters he had slain, propped against the wall, had not turned into bright red and spread across the floor like the others.
Between these two swine corpses, a special one-person-wide gap appeared, resembling a ’door’.
He Ao dashed toward it, reaching the gap between the two bodies.
He pressed on the gap, only to feel the hard surface of the wall; the crevice had not formed any kind of special ’rule’ door.
So where exactly was the ’exit’ of this room, and why hadn’t these two pig monsters ’melted’?
He Ao looked at the two pig monsters, glanced around, and suddenly paused.
It was the ’light’.
Both pig monsters were positioned in the corner, seemingly in a ’blind spot,’ with their light much dimmer than other areas.
He Ao realized a problem he had been overlooking.
Where did the ’light’ in this hall come from?
He Ao looked up; the ceiling was covered with dense corpses, which blocked his view but not the light.
And at this moment, that corpse monster charged at him again, its strength at least half greater than before.
He Ao took a few steps forward, dodging the monster’s attack, stepping away from the crevice, and looked back at his shadow—a faint one with a thin layer of blood-red stretched out behind him, slightly shorter than his body.
Although this space was governed by various strange ’rules,’ it still abided by certain physical laws, such as gravity, which was the same as in the surface world.
If the principles of light and shadow were the same, the existence of a shadow proved that there was indeed a light source in this room, situated directly in front of him and above.
If the shadow was shorter than he was, then the angle between the line from the light source to the top of his head and the horizontal plane of the ground should be more than forty-five degrees.
Looking up, he estimated the direction of the light source by the shadow.
In that direction, there was only a dense mass of corpses covering his vision.
Though the corpses could obscure one’s line of sight, they could not block the light.
He Ao shook his head, glanced back at the monster behind him, and quickly took several steps forward.
The monster had become stronger and stronger, and if it increased in strength further, he would have to rely on enhancing his Fist Technique to kill it.
Suddenly, as the monster caught up with him and He Ao was near the predicted point of the light source, he abruptly turned and released a sword strike, beheading the creature.
The monster’s body fell backward, shattering and melting away.
Boom, boom, boom—
At that instant, sounds like firecrackers echoed as multiple ropes snapped, and dozens of corpses fell all at once.
In the place where these corpses had been, the dense cover had been removed, revealing a small ’hollow’.
He Ao looked up at the hollow and felt an even more intense radiance emanating from within.
He lunged forward, charging toward the corpses rushing at him, then stepped on the top of a corpse’s head, using it to spring through the ’hollow’ hanging in the sky amongst the bodies.
In that moment, the corpses hanging from the ceiling surged like a wave under a storm, swinging wildly with a sharp ’hissing’ noise.
By then, He Ao had grabbed hold of a ’hanging rope’ and saw the scene above the heads of the hanging corpses.
Not far from him, at the top of the great hall, there was a blood-red ’skylight’ above the densely hung ’heads’.
A rich, blood-red radiance poured down through the skylight.
"Ohh!!!"
The corpse below the rope He Ao was on swung its arms vigorously, trying to pull him down and tear him apart.
The densely packed heads also turned to look at He Ao, undulating like a tide and desperately swinging their claws toward him.
These old guys are quite enthusiastic...
He Ao shook his head, dodged the claws of the corpse beneath his feet, stepped diagonally on its skull, and with a forceful leap, grabbed another rope closer to the skylight.
The corpses below grew even more agitated, with those nearest to He Ao almost flying up, reaching for him.
He Ao gave them a glance, then climbed a bit higher as they reached their peak swing, tilted his body, and with a slash cut the rope around their necks.
Smack smack smack—
With some dull thuds, those corpses were flung out from the forest of hanging bodies and landed on the floor.
Taking advantage of the noise of the collision, He Ao swayed and took a leap, reaching for the rope closest to the skylight.
The thick blood-red radiance almost completely enveloped him, and he stretched out his hand to grab the skylight’s handle.
At this instant, he felt his body rapidly stiffening, losing control over his flesh as if he were a puppet, with intense pain afflicting him.
The blood-red radiance outside the skylight shimmered, seemingly harboring some terrifying danger.
He Ao stared at it all, gripped the handle tightly, and fiercely pushed outward, moving the skylight.
In that moment, the whole world suddenly spun and drifted; the howling roar of the corpses, the blood-red radiance, and the intense pain all started to fade away as the skylight slowly opened.
The entire world seemed to have undergone a proclamation, as if sitting on a swing ride at an amusement park, dizziness swept over He Ao.
Under his feet solid ground appeared, and it felt as though he were standing on the earth; in turn, his vision gradually cleared.
A ’living room’ with simple decor appeared before his eyes.
Though ’simple,’ the living room was fully equipped, with a television, sofa, dining table, and even some sophisticated electronic paintings hanging on the wall.
Compared to the bare single rooms He Ao had previously entered, this one was almost considered a ’mansion’.
At the moment, He Ao was standing at the doorway of this ’mansion’, his hand on the doorknob, in the process of ’opening the door’.
He Ao looked back and saw a thick wall outside the door, completely sealing it off, with nothing beyond it.
He shook his head and walked into the house.
"Alice! Come out for dinner!"
Just then, a gentle call came from the kitchen, apparently the voice of a middle-aged man.
Following that, a blurry figure seemed to be walking out of the kitchen.
In that instant, He Ao felt a strong sense of crisis, and he swiftly dashed to the storage cabinet by the door, reaching out and pulling it open.
Then he saw a head of beautiful red hair and a pair of bewildered, wide-open eyes.
Footsteps were coming from the kitchen, as if someone inside was making their way out.
He Ao quickly hid on the other side of the storage cabinet and pulled the door closed.
A large and a small person were squeezed in the cabinet, staring at each other.
"Are you a human or a ghost..."
The red-haired woman looked at the young boy in front of her, glanced at the blood on his body, huddled up, and asked in a low voice.
"Human,"
He Ao glanced at her, swiftly said, then he looked at the red-haired woman with some confusion, "Are you afraid of ghosts?"
The red-haired woman subconsciously nodded, then immediately shook her head, whispering, "Not that afraid."
"If you’re afraid of ghosts, why did you come in?"
He Ao looked at her puzzled, judging from the way the red-haired woman had behaved at first, she seemed to be very familiar with this Inner Church.
He paused, thinking, then asked, "Are you a believer of the Eternal Radiance?"
"I am not one of those crazies,"
The red-haired woman immediately sat up, shaking her head with her chest heaving, "I’m just in it for the money, a bounty hunter, you know?"
"Yeah, a mercenary, I know."
He Ao nodded.
"Bounty hunter!"
The red-haired woman’s face stiffened.
Thump—Thump—
At this moment, somewhat muffled footsteps came from outside, He Ao gestured to the red-haired woman for silence, then he pushed the cabinet door open a crack to look outside.
At this moment a completely blurred, emaciated figure was emerging from the kitchen with two plates of bloody steaks in hand.
His entire body was filled with a misty yet dim radiance, like a figure completely composed of light.
And the only thing on his body not made of this radiance was a square paper mask, with a ’smiling face’ drawn in crayon, tightly affixed to his cheek.
He Ao watched this figure, whose voice was exactly the same as the ’figure’ that had knocked on the door in the first room; it should be the same figure.
"Why is the door open?"
The smiling masked figure set the plates of meat on the table, turned around, and looked towards the room door, passing by the storage cabinet and shutting the room door.
The moment he passed the storage cabinet, He Ao felt a very strong sense of crisis subconsciously.
This smiling masked figure was extremely dangerous, the danger coming not only from himself but also from a powerful, twisted force.
Through the ’Spiritual Vision’, the body of this smiling masked figure was actually connected to the entire room, meaning, he was part of the room itself.
He might just be one of the room’s ’rules’.
"Alice? Alice?"
With a soft ’click’, the smiling masked figure closed the door and headed straight for the door of the secondary bedroom.
"Is this the ’monster’ of the room?"
The red-haired woman poked her head out, saw the smiling masked figure walking away, pressed her voice very low, and asked softly, "Who is this ’Alice’ he mentioned? Another monster?"
He Ao turned back, glanced at the red-haired woman, and asked softly, "What was your last ’room’ like?"
After a brief hesitation, the red-haired woman spoke softly, "It was a huge tent, filled with snow, and headless wandering corpses were in the snow. As soon as I got close to them, they started to feign death. It was terrifying; I hid in a broken box and ended up here."
As she spoke, she patted her chest still shaken, then she asked in a low voice, "What about you?"
"It was a sealed hall,"
He Ao glanced at her and spoke slowly, "There were a lot of fat pigs."
"No corpses?"
The red-haired woman asked tentatively.
"Yes, they were hung from the ceiling by the neck, tightly bound together,"
He Ao still watched outside and continued, "Swaying with the wind..."
"Okay, stop talking!"
The red-haired woman took a deep breath, "Yours is too terrifying."
"And yet you take on such a task while being so afraid of ghosts?"
He Ao asked casually.
"I had no choice; they paid too much,"
The red-haired woman lowered her voice, carefully leaning on the edge of the door, "So there are two monsters in this room, one is this masked man, and the other is the one called ’Alice’?"
"Not necessarily."
He Ao watched the outside.
The two of them were no longer as stiff as they were at the beginning.
The previous conversation was a mutual inquiry which was actually about establishing a basic level of trust.
The red-haired woman was not a Believer of Eternal Radiance, and from the way He Ao questioned, she guessed that He Ao was also not a Believer of Eternal Radiance.
Therefore, no matter for the defenders of the church of the Eternal Secret Teachings or the attackers of the Eternal Ancient Teachings, they were outsiders.
Based on the madness of these Believers, they were likely to attack indiscriminately, which provided a reason for an alliance.
Although each had their own thoughts at the moment, they shared a common goal before reaching the core of the church.
"Alice, I bought some fresh steak today, the taste is absolutely good."
The door to the secondary bedroom opened, and the man with the smiling mask seemed to lead a little girl out from it.
But there was no one beside him, he was talking and laughing to thin air.
Seeing this eerie scene, the red-haired woman’s body obviously stiffened for a moment.
She glanced at the smiling masked man heading to the dining table, then turned her head to look at He Ao, "There must be some kind of item in this room that hides a passage to the next room, shall we start looking now?"
The implication of her words was to exhaustively test each one.
"Did you get this far by doing that?"
He Ao looked at her with a puzzled expression.
After thinking for a moment, the red-haired woman spoke softly, "We only have that method now."
The implication was that she had a faster way to get through other rooms before.
He Ao thought of her disc Prop.
"It seems you were going to reach this room before me,"
the red-haired woman asked He Ao, "Do you have a faster way through?"
"By deduction."
He Ao said calmly.
The red-haired woman shared some information with him, and he reciprocated.
Deduction?
The red-haired woman was momentarily confused.
The exits of these rooms can be deduced? Aren’t they supposed to be found either by cheating or through exhaustive search? The exits of this place have clues? They’re not all just luck?
She looked at He Ao’s profile and felt that he didn’t seem to be lying.
Moreover, it was obvious that, even with her cheating through rooms, He Ao had arrived here before her. Either his luck was astronomical, or he truly had some kind of special ’high-level player technique’, finding the correct path each time and quickly clearing each room.
Could he be an ’Old player’ who had mastered the rules?
After thinking about it, she still asked in a low voice, "Is this your first time here?"
"Mhm."
He Ao watched the smiling masked man cutting the steak at the dining table and nodded slightly.
Watching the young boy before her, the red-haired woman suddenly felt that the thick fog surrounding him had deepened further. She suppressed the doubts in her heart and whispered, "So, shall we go out now to find ’clues’?"
She realized that this young boy, although seemingly young, might have a far greater grasp of the rules of this place than she did.
When you’re out of your depth, learn to cling desperately to those stronger than you.
"No rush."
He Ao shook his head.
His gaze drifted to the open door of the secondary bedroom.
From his angle, he could perfectly see the small iron-frame bed in the secondary bedroom.
At this moment, two figures rolled out from under that bed in the secondary bedroom, cautiously exploring outward.
And at that moment, the red-haired woman also noticed these two people.
"They are from the Eternal Ancient Teachings, new faces, probably transferred from other cities,"
she murmured into He Ao’s ear.
Eternal Ancient Teachings...
He Ao took note of the term, said nothing, but watched the movements of the two figures.
This room had suddenly ’gathered’ so many people; it seemed that he was indeed very close to the ’labyrinth’s’ endpoint, probably in the last one or two rooms.
Those two figures from the Eternal Ancient Teachings made no attempt to hide; as soon as they emerged from behind the door, they started searching around.
"Who’s there?"
The smiling masked man heard the noise coming from the secondary bedroom, slowly stood up, and walked towards its entrance.
At this moment, the two individuals from the Eternal Ancient Teachings also heard the masked man’s voice, exchanged a glance, and quickly edged towards the door of the secondary bedroom while concealing themselves behind the wall.
At that moment, He Ao suddenly felt something, sensing that the diary in his pocket had undergone some sort of ’change’.
He reached into his pocket, touching the few pages of the diary.
Then he felt some fine cracks on the thick paper.
