Chapter 628: Chapter 628: A02 (Mega Chapter for Monthly Votes)
"Mr. Hao Yi," Li Le hurried over, stuttering as he looked at He Ao, "The Dean said everything is ready on his end... he..."
"Wants to see me?"
He Ao looked up at Li Le, finishing his sentence.
He Ao had an agreement with Li Cheng for him to use the Angel-class Transcendent item to forge the Shadowless Sword contaminated by the Mysterious Shadow.
Now, with the people who entered the ruins not immediately coming out, Li Cheng must be wanting to get some information from Hao Yi, the ’man from the ruins.’
So it was just as well to borrow the name of this agreement.
"Two hours from now, Westlank, the place where the Velora previously appeared."
He Ao stood up, closed his computer, picked up his cup, and smiled at Li Le, "Your coffee is really good."
If he remembered correctly, the Research Institute had another prophecy-class Transcendent item; perhaps Li Cheng now had some information that He Ao wasn’t aware of.
The reason he set two hours was that Li Cheng was most likely in Beidu now, and from Beidu to Westlank, it would take at least two hours at the fastest.
He couldn’t appear too anxious right now.
The roaring sound of a ship’s horn rose out of the void, and He Ao got up, walked into the Velora that appeared from the void, and vanished from the streets.
Li Le glanced at the empty streets and then at the watch on his hand.
The time was now 6:01.
He opened his mouth, "This is bad."
But he was somewhat impressed by the calm and collected demeanor that Hao Yi displayed, even in the face of an event that could potentially shake the entire world; the man was still able to smile at him calmly and thank him for the coffee.
----
Navigator
Clank—
A giant metal sheet was suddenly pushed aside.
Right in front of them appeared a dimly lit, grey, hollow area, with a faint glow.
He Ao looked ahead.
What he saw at this moment was a wide platform, similar to a train station: one side of the platform was a wall, the other side seemed to be a tunnel for electric trains to pass through, and beyond this tunnel, one could faintly see the weak light of the opposite platform.
This was supposed to be a ’station’, looking quite similar to the subway stations in Central Earth.
The top of the platform appeared to have a specially designed openwork ceiling, with lights like stars adorning it.
Below the ceiling, among the spotty bloodstains on the floor, one could also vaguely make out the designs corresponding to the lights above.
On the floor lay a dead creature that looked like a many-legged centipede.
"This place used to be quite beautiful."
Ye Yun followed He Ao, looking up at the ceiling overhead.
At this moment, the ceiling which was designed like an array of stars had only a few lights shining dimly.
It must be said that the quality of the items inside the Navigator was excellent; even after who knows how many years, many mechanical and electronic components were still functioning normally.
He Ao bent down to look at the metal sheet they had just knocked down; the scratches under the metal, where it scraped the floor, looked quite new, as if it had only recently been moved there.
Following the trail here, they had already started noticing more and more traces of Ivier’s movements.
The closer they got, the more careless Ivier became in covering his tracks and blocking the paths.
It was evident that, because no one had been following him, he had grown noticeably lax.
Nevertheless, the many precautions he left behind had significantly slowed down He Ao’s and Ye Yun’s progress.
Of course, He Ao was not without gain; along the way, they had been fighting monsters, and he had already filled nearly half a bag with grey Energy Blocks.
Now Ye Yun bent down, looking at the dead centipede, "Ivier, this guy, all along the way he dodged, leaving monsters behind to hinder us, but he actually killed one here."
"These battle traces are fresh,"
he said, looking at the bloodstained and dusty ground, step by step approaching the centipede, "it seems Ivier left not long ago."
"But perhaps something bad has already happened."
He Ao walked to the edge of the platform.
He stood at this spot, gazing into the depths of the tunnel.
It was pitch black.
Then he picked up a flashlight and shone it down, illuminating the tracks in the tunnel, "There are fresh scrapes on these rails."
"Has that guy already succeeded?"
Ye Yun also walked over, standing beside He Ao, looking down at the tracks. He raised his head to look at He Ao, "What do we do now?"
Throughout the journey, as He Ao solved more and more problems, he seemed to have become somewhat dependent on He Ao.
It looked as though Ivier had successfully taken the tram to the most central area of the spaceship.
He Ao lifted his flashlight.
Actually, He Ao’s mindset was already very stable now because he knew that worse things had already happened.
The ruins had not brought the people who entered back to the main world at the usual time.
This meant that something must have gone wrong somewhere.
The worst-case scenario was that those who entered the ruins this time might never be able to return.
Together with this spaceship floating in space, strewn with death, they would become part of this eternal tomb.
Although he was also very panicked, he tried to remain calm while controlling the ’Hao Yi’ clone.
Because he was very clear, if ’Hao Yi’ also showed panic, then the situation would become even more unpredictable.
He Ao did not know the reason for the anomaly in the ruins; his only breakthrough was Ivier, who might know why they had come to this spaceship.
After all, it was not normal for so many people to converge on this one spaceship.
Two abnormal things coming together must have a deeper inherent reason.
He Ao looked around once more, returned to the corpse of the centipede, and, with the bone sword, parted the carcass to reveal a damaged structure behind it.
Mixed in with the fresh blood of the centipede, there seemed to be some green fragments.
"Go take a look."
He Ao turned his head to glance at the platform opposite, then directly jumped down, crossed the tunnel, and walked towards the platform on the other side.
"Wait for me."
Ye Yun, watching his back, also jumped down to follow him.
Both of them were quick, and they reached the opposite platform in no time. He Ao stretched out his hand, clutched the edge of the platform, flipped over with a leap, and landed on top of the platform.
The platform’s glow was even dimmer here, almost making it impossible to see anything. He Ao shone the flashlight towards the space on this side of the platform, corresponding to where the damaged structure was behind the centipede carcass.
A green button appeared in his line of sight.
"It’s the button to call the tram!"
Ye Yun instantly understood, this button was very similar to the one they had pressed to summon the tram when they first got off the elevator.
He looked back at the centipede carcass on the opposite platform,
"Did Ivier press the button over there, and then had to wait on the platform for the tram, so he killed the centipede to cover up the button he destroyed?"
"He needed to wait,"
He Ao moved to the button and pressed it,
"When he came in, the tram probably wasn’t stopped inside the station, so when he pressed the button, he had to wait for the tram to come. In order to prevent this goat creature from disrupting his wait, or even causing harm to the tram, that’s why he took action to eliminate this goat creature and used it to conceal the switch."
And with the pressing of the button by He Ao, a violent sound echoed from the depths of the tunnel as if some giant machinery that had been silent for a long time was reactivated.
But this violent sound only lasted a moment before it fell silent once again, like a dud.
Before pressing the button, He Ao had always been worried that the button was broken, given that Ivier so clearly understood the place, yet he had only destroyed one button, which proved that the other button might be problematic.
Now it seemed his worries were unfounded.
The button was fine.
The tram was broken.
"The sound wasn’t far."
He Ao withdrew his hand, quickly walked to the edge of the platform, and jumped into the tunnel, heading forward.
Ye Yun, although not understanding what he intended to do, still followed behind him.
The tunnel was dark, with both of them shining their flashlights; they had only walked a few steps forward when they saw a massive object appearing in their field of vision.
He Ao raised the flashlight and looked at the massive object.
It was a tram, dark red throughout, with thick bloodstains covering every inch of the outer shell, and the dried blood was so thick that the original color of the tram could not be discerned.
As they got closer to the tram, the overall structure of the tram also became visible to He Ao.
It was a five-section tram, with a cab at both the front and back, and in between the two cabs were three passenger compartments.
The cabs were not long, and through the blurry windows, one could see that they were filled with various instrument panels, but there was no place left for a driver.
It seemed to be a purely unmanned tram.
The door of the rear cab had been sealed shut, and the dashboard within appeared to have been completely destroyed.
He Ao and Ye Yun made their way to the middle carriage, where they found a damaged door and stepped aboard.
In the moment they entered the carriage.
A dense crowd of silhouettes appeared before He Ao’s eyes, along with a vivid red that dyed his entire field of vision.
Splashes of blood, a desperate and crowded mass of people.
They surged frantically towards the exterior, attempting to open the carriage doors.
Their hands pounded against the doors, which remained firmly shut without any sign of opening.
Their anguished and piercing cries echoed throughout the space, accompanied by the sound of weeping.
Among the sea of red, the bodies of the dead began to contort.
"So oppressive."
Ye Yun followed He Ao with a flashlight in hand, surveying the interior of the tram.
With his words, the vision before He Ao’s eyes and the echoing cries instantaneously vanished, leaving only distorted murmurs lingering by his ear.
He Ao looked inside the carriage.
The situation within was even more severe than outside, with blood having painted all the interior trimmings a suffocating and twisted dark red.
Even amidst the death and bloodshed commonplace in the Navigator, such a bloody scene still managed to shock He Ao slightly.
He turned to glance at the door they had entered through—exceptionally sturdy, yet it had been damaged from the inside out.
The amount of blood that tainted this door was also the most abundant.
The moment he saw this door, the agonizing and oppressive illusion flashed across He Ao’s vision once again.
"He Ao, is there something wrong?"
Ye Yun looked at He Ao with some confusion.
"It’s nothing."
He Ao averted his gaze and headed towards the front cab.
The illusion he had just witnessed was known as an ’Echo’ in the study of the mystical.
He Ao didn’t fully understand this ’Echo,’ but the Wilderness Wanderer role, Ronald, learnt of it during his mystic studies in childhood. Once, his teacher had introduced this phenomenon to him.
Such echoes generally occurred in places with powerful energy dispersal or severe pollution, retaining some events that had once unfolded.
Most of them were related to a kind of intense emotion.
For instance, on an ancient battlefield where many had died, if by chance a Higher Being also happened to be nearby, causing severe pollution, under specific conditions, some individuals with a high level of spiritual sensitivity could, years later, witness the ’Echoes’ left behind by the perished warriors.
Legend has it that these echoes originated from the obsessions of the deceased, amplified by the power of the pollution; resolving their fixations might yield unexpected benefits.
Of course, when Ronald was learning this knowledge, the advice he received was singular: ’run’.
Places with echoes were at the very core of the pollution, and if one encountered an ’Echo,’ it was best not to think of any benefits but to run as far as possible.
Moreover, the so-called benefits tainted with pollution weren’t necessarily ’benefits.’
Theoretically, creating an Echo seemed to require stringent conditions, such as strong pollution.
Yet the pollution levels within this tram weren’t high.
In fact, ever since He Ao had entered the core area, the degree of pollution he felt was minimal.
It was even less than what he had sensed when encountering the Goat Creature.
"It seems a lot of people died in this carriage."
Ye Yun shone his flashlight around the interior.
"Yes," He Ao nodded lightly, "It’s as if they were purposely sealed inside and then hunted down."
The interior compartments of the tram were interconnected with no doors separating them, and the two quickly reached the front cab area.
The door separating the driver’s cab from the passenger carriages stood before them, and Ye Yun approached, taking hold of the handle and pulling hard. Accompanied by a crisp sound, the door swung open.
Numerous control panels came into view.
The machinery in the front cab was mostly well preserved, with a monitor that perhaps, due to He Ao having pressed that green button and starting the tram, caused some of the control panels to still flicker dimly.
"Maybe there’s a way to start this tram."
He Ao approached the dashboard and violently pried open the cabinet beneath it.
If Ivier could drive the tram away, then it proved that there was a possibility to drive this tram.
The equipment in this cabinet was well maintained, but some of the wiring had been damaged.
He Ao quickly connected the wires that could be joined; for those that could not, he sought a way to possibly link them together.
However, all these connections were futile until he touched a loose wire end.
Boom—
As he touched this wire end, the entire front of the train emitted a booming sound, then quickly fell silent again.
He Ao rapidly pulled out this wire end and then dismantled the wire, which had a connector in the middle with a poor contact. He twisted the faulty contact together directly.
Boom—
Accompanied by the booming noise, one after another, the train’s dashboard lights lit up.
A female figure with silver flagship-long hair, rainbow-edged silver pupils, and dressed in a tight leather outfit then appeared on the central screen of the train’s dashboard.
She opened her mouth and introduced herself in a gentle voice, first in the language of the First District, then in the language of the Second District,
"Navigator’s primary artificial intelligence A02 at your service."
----
Main World·Velora
He Ao’s clone sat in a booth, looking at the large display in front of him, "8753, can you produce a correspondence table between my language and your original system’s built-in languages?
was an artificial intelligence brought out from the ruins, and its system’s built-in languages were those of the Original Federation’s five districts.
"Sorry, human sir, language translation is a locked program. 8753 does not have the authority to operate it. You can enter 8753’s database with an administrator account and password to access the information you require."
8753’s mechanical voice answered.
"Only administrators can access your database?"
He Ao continued to ask.
"Yes, human sir."
replied.
"Alright, second question," He Ao paused, "What is the Navigator?"
"The Navigator is······data error······unable to respond······rebooting system······standard artificial intelligence 8753 at your service, human sir."
The mechanical voice of 8753 echoed in the cramped space.
He Ao stood up, reached out to unplug the monitor’s cable, and left the booth.
This wasn’t his first time asking 8753 these questions, and the answers he received were always similar.
No permission, or an error.
Whenever he tried to ask pivotal questions, the artificial intelligence seemed to conveniently ’malfunction’.
He closed the door of the booth and turned on his phone.
The latest message in his hand was from his subordinate in Daybreak, ’Noding,’ along with an attached file.
The content of the file was information collected by Noding about ’Boss’s friend, the missing ’Painter.’"
The Painter was once one of the heads of Daybreak’s Western Lands. He wasn’t as mysterious as ’Boss,’ and some photos of him were in the documents.
He often attended public events.
But that was all there was to it.
As to who he was, what he did, or his real identity, even within Daybreak, nobody knew anything.
Even with He Ao’s level of clearance, he could not investigate any information.
Daybreak only knew he was a top C-level warrior whose identity wasn’t traceable like Hu Wen’s.
This powerful C-level had suddenly popped up out of the blue, appeared in this world, and then joined Daybreak.
Although every member of Daybreak had a possibly checkered and mysterious past, it was clear that the ’Painter’ was among the most mysterious of the shady individuals in Daybreak.
With no traceable past to confirm the ’Painter’s’ C-level status, it came down to several instances where he had killed C-level warriors of the World Tree.
He Ao turned off his phone.
The identity information about the ’Painter’ reminded him of someone.
Hao Yi.
A fake, fabricated, spontaneously created identity.
It seems this was another friend fond of nesting dolls.
