Chapter 627: Chapter 627: The Tram and the Mutation (Extra Long Chapter, Seeking Monthly Pass)

As He Ao charged forward, the steel gorilla monster also swung up a huge steel beam from the ground.

Swinging the steel beam, it rushed towards He Ao.

The steel beam, seven or eight meters long, created a roaring whistling sound as it sliced through the air.

The monster, obviously just dazed by the sudden strike from He Ao, didn’t dare let He Ao get close.

But He Ao wasn’t facing a creature wielding a long-handled weapon for the first time. He flipped through the air, landing atop the swinging steel beam, then with another light step like a nimble bird, flew towards the side of the monster.

Before the gorilla could react, the white blade of the bone sword already sliced into its left arm.

The first sensation He Ao felt in his hand was the blade cutting through flesh, with a slight buffering feel, followed by a clear pause as if it struck some kind of metal.

Below the fleshy exterior of the monster was a solid metal interior.

However, He Ao wasn’t surprised; it would be strange if the monsters inside this spaceship didn’t have some metal in them.

He pushed the hilt forward, his body crossing over the monster’s shoulder, then turning around, he grasped the hilt with both hands. Using the momentum of his leap, he pulled hard.

Squeak—

Along with a sharp, clear sound, metal seemed to tear suddenly within the monster’s arm, and the entire arm fell off, red blood with a grey glint spraying out.

"Roar—" The enormous gorilla let out a painful roar, grabbing the steel beam with one hand and violently spinning it towards He Ao, who had jumped behind it.

He Ao leaped upwards, dodging the attack.

By this time, Ye Yun had also finally reacted. He rushed toward the gorilla monster, leaped, and brought down his blade on the gorilla’s back, splitting open its flesh to reveal the silvery white metal.

The gorilla winced in pain, its movements stopping for a moment.

At the same time, He Ao seized the opportunity, throwing his bone sword and then violently leaping after the streak of the sword.

The thrown bone sword pierced through the gorilla’s eye, and He Ao, in hot pursuit, grabbed the hilt firmly, his feet landing on the monster’s shoulders. He channeled strength into his arms and forcefully pulled on the hilt.

In that instant, fresh red blood spattered out, and the white blade emerged from the top of the gorilla monster’s head.

This sword had split open the gorilla monster’s metallic skull vertically.

Amidst the spray of blood, He Ao’s movements did not halt as he used the upward momentum from drawing the sword to flip off the monster’s body.

He landed steadily.

The gorilla monster’s energy gathering points were located in its left arm and skull.

"It’s over," He Ao said, flicking the fresh blood from the bone sword, returning it to the scabbard on his back.

Behind him, the enormous gorilla monster thudded to the ground.

Then, He Ao turned around, walked over to the monster, cut its body open, and quickly found several grey Energy Blocks, pocketing them.

After these few battles, he had already begun to discern some patterns regarding these Energy Blocks.

They usually appeared around the monsters’ energy gathering points or along the largest energy circuits.

Plus, only within monsters of C-level or above would these Energy Blocks be found.

Although this gorilla monster wasn’t strong, it had quite a few Energy Blocks; probably enough to fire the Plasma Cannon two and a half times.

As He Ao cleaned up the battlefield, he also turned on his flashlight, carefully examining the surrounding scene.

The core area floors were covered in more bloodstains than the ring-shaped chambers, the coagulated blood having formed a thick layer of "scab" on the ground.

Perhaps because no one had been there for so long, the footprints left on the ground were extremely noticeable.

After a short search, the beam of the flashlight shone towards the front left,

"There are footprints over there, very rapid ones, with new signs of damage around them. This proves that a minor battle occurred here before we arrived. It must be where Ivier fought with this gorilla," He Ao said.

He lifted his feet and walked in that direction.

"Ah? It’s over just like that?" said Ye Yun, who stood with his sword raised, yet to make his next move, finally snapping out of the daze from the recent battle.

He hadn’t even made his next attack yet, and the monster was already gone? And the battlefield already cleared?

Glancing at the gorilla monster on the ground, he swallowed hard, quickly sheathed his sword, and followed in He Ao’s footsteps.

He knew what the Energy Blocks that He Ao had just been searching for were; He Ao had actually mentioned them while recounting his experiences to him before.

They seemed like crystals of some kind of energy.

The two had discussed on the elevator earlier that if they came across such small spoils of war, He Ao should take them first and they would be distributed based on contribution after leaving the ruins.

Ye Yun had proposed this plan because He Ao was clearly stronger, and in case there were any issues where they had to flee, he could keep more of the spoils of war safe.

He Ao had no objections to this, as such small items wouldn’t take up much pocket space.

"These footprints seem quite hasty," Ye Yun remarked, turning on his own flashlight and following the direction He Ao had pointed out.

Faint footprints revealed themselves in the bloodstains on the ground, leading into the deep, dark abyss.

"He ran ahead?"

Ye Yun looked towards the direction in which the footprints extended.

The footprints were clearer than he had expected; evidently, Ivier had not made his escape as smoothly as he had thought.

"He Ao, should we chase after him now?"

He turned his head to look at He Ao, who stood beside him, silently observing those footprints without speaking.

"Wait a second."

He Ao said softly, then crouched down and closely inspected the footprints on the ground with his flashlight.

After a short pause, he pointed the flashlight to the left and right sides of the corridor.

They were at the entrance to a corridor that connected the great hall to the outside, and the footprints led deeper into the corridor.

To their left was a flat, vertical metal wall; to their right was the spacious, curved wall of the great hall.

He Ao shone the flashlight on the wall of the corridor to his left and then slowly stood up, examining the wall carefully.

He reached out and tapped it lightly.

Thud, thud, thud—

An empty echo came from behind the wall.

Then, he pressed his hand against the wall and pushed hard.

Crack—

A ’hidden door’ was suddenly pushed open by him.

The seams of the door were cleverly designed to be concealed within the surrounding wall.

The corridor was dimly lit and the wall was splattered with blood stains. One would hardly notice the door without looking closely.

Behind this door was a pitch-black space as deep as the Abyss, into which He Ao shone his flashlight.

The staircase descending into the darkness appeared in their view.

At the same time, the shallow footprints on the staircase became visible alongside the stairs in the light of their flashlights.

"Ivier went this way!"

Ye Yun finally realized, glancing down the depths of the staircase, "What is this place? A secret passageway? Emergency stairs?"

Then he looked towards He Ao, "He Ao, how did you know he went this way?"

"Footprints,"

He Ao pointed the flashlight towards the footprints at the entrance of the corridor and then walked towards the staircase, with Ye Yun following him.

As He Ao walked forward, he explained,

"The footprints that we followed from the main hall were all light. Starting from the entrance of the corridor, the footprints became heavier and obviously more hurried, but in reality, there were no signs of battle on either side of the entire corridor. This means that Ivier had actually managed to shake off the gorilla creature by some means, and he wasn’t in danger at the time."

"But he still pretended to be in a hurry, with the intention of misleading us, the trackers, into heading deeper into the corridor,"

Ye Yun picked up the conversation, "But his footprints only show him going forward, none coming back."

"Walking backwards is enough."

He Ao shone the flashlight around.

This sort of precise operation was easy for a Transcendent and was not unusual; He Ao had encountered it in the Copy World before.

"I see,"

Ye Yun instantly understood, following He Ao’s gaze around. Although the entrance to this staircase was hidden, the blood stains were no fewer than outside. He could almost imagine the terrible carnage that had taken place here, "Why do I feel like Ivier knows that we are following him?"

"Perhaps it’s just out of caution, just in case."

He Ao continued the conversation.

The two of them quickly reached the corner of the staircase and followed the footprints ahead, continuing downwards.

Ye Yun’s clothes scraped against the wall. He turned his head towards the side, and in the scattered light of the flashlight on the metallic wall, he could see deep scratches as if they had been made by fingernails.

When a civilization is destroyed, not a single person can escape their ultimate fate.

"What’s wrong?"

He Ao stopped and looked at him.

"Nothing,"

Ye Yun shifted his gaze back, "I was just thinking about what terrible things might have happened on this spaceship. From what the ruins suggest about the use of Transcendent powers, there may have been powerful Transcendents on this spaceship, but they seem to have been unable to prevent the disaster."

"That’s why the Research Institute wants to explore the ruins."

He Ao turned his head and continued forward.

"Right."

Ye Yun nodded, reined in his thoughts, and continued to follow He Ao’s footsteps, then he smiled, "He Ao, you don’t seem to be afraid at all."

He Ao looked up and glanced at the surrounding silent darkness, "Maybe it’s because I have a lot of friends."

As they gradually descended, the pollution around them became more and more intense.

However, it wasn’t intense enough to interfere with a C-level consciousness.

Soon, after passing a few stairway turns, a half-open iron door appeared in their view, and the footprints in front of them vanished behind this iron door.

He Ao stopped in his tracks and shone his flashlight around.

Amidst a patch of mottled bloodstains, he saw a sign on the wall that had fallen off by half, depicting something that seemed to be a rail vehicle.

"Ivier seems to have gone in here."

Ye Yun crouched at the doorway, carefully peering into the darkness behind the door, "I feel like there’s something behind this door?"

And as he spoke, a blood-stained human face fell from above, suddenly appearing in his field of vision.

"Ah!"

He was startled and swung his greatsword forward in a cleaving motion.

With blood splattering, the object in front of him split in two.

"What’s this?"

Now he had the time to look at the thing he had just cut in half on the ground.

"It looks like a bat."

He Ao walked over and shone his flashlight on the corpse.

It was a huge bat, around one meter seventy-eight in height, but unlike ordinary bats, this one had a human face on its head, with wide eyes full of terror and stained with blood.

"This thing is not very strong, probably only D-level," Ye Yun glanced down, recovering from his initial shock, "but it does look a bit scary,"

Then he looked back at the door, "Behind it seems to be a very spacious hall."

"Bad news."

He Ao walked to Ye Yun’s side.

"Ah?"

Ye Yun looked at He Ao.

"Bats are gregarious animals, often gathering in hundreds or thousands."

He Ao said slowly.

"Ah!?"

Ye Yun was taken aback.

And in that instant, with the aid of the flashlight’s dim light, one blood-stained human face after another emerged in the pitch-black hall.

"Damn!"

Ye Yun jumped in fright, drew his greatsword, and charged into the darkness ahead, "The best way to overcome fear is to face it head-on!"

He let out a loud shout, spun his greatsword, and sliced with every swing; blood flew, and bat limbs scattered.

He Ao: ?

So fierce?

He too rushed into the hall.

However, compared to Ye Yun’s frenzied sword dance, his movements were much simpler; he basically raised his sword at the moment the human-faced bats charged at him and shattered them.

Or he would spin his sword in a flourish, simultaneously slicing several bats nearby, ensuring to maintain his strength and rhythm.

But he also discovered that these human-faced bats also had the common bat characteristic of being sensitive to light.

So using the flashlight to shine on them was effective in repelling some of the bats.

However, they would also coax their companions to block the light from the flashlight, so this method was not particularly effective.

He Ao’s figure twirled in the darkness, with the flashlight in his hand constantly changing directions, and soon, he spotted a passage on the far side illuminated by a faint light.

In the entire hall, only that passageway was aglow with dim light, and there were no bats around it.

He Ao moved next to Ye Yun.

At this moment, Ye Yun was still wielding his sword wildly.

His combat had basically relied on instinctual martial prowess and had become somewhat unmethodical.

"Towards that way!"

He Ao walked up to his side, pointed with the flashlight at the lit passageway, and shouted loudly.

This time Ye Yun understood He Ao’s shout; without any hesitation, he followed He Ao, and the two quickly moved through the swarm of bats toward the passageway.

Along the way, they encountered many metallic skeletons, seeming to indicate that the bats survived by hunting other creatures.

And as they made their escape, the bats seemingly caught on to their idea and started to swarm in madness.

Several times, there were so many of them that they even grabbed Ye Yun’s arm and lifted him up.

Then they were torn to shreds by Ye Yun’s crazed sword swings.

The two struggled for quite a while before they finally broke through the swarm of bats and entered the tunnel bathed in light.

As they touched the brilliance of the tunnel, the dense mass of bats that filled the darkness swiftly retreated, hovering around the entrance of the tunnel and peering at the two through the hazy darkness.

"Ah! I hate bats the most."

Ye Yun leaned against the wall and slid to the ground, thoroughly exhausted.

Most of his clothes were already torn, hanging off his body in tatters.

He Ao was in a somewhat better state since he controlled the pace of the fight, but even his clothes were damaged in many places.

"Eat something?"

He Ao took out a compressed biscuit and a Solid Energy Bar from the ration pack he carried.

"No need, I have some too."

Ye Yun smiled, taking out his own compressed biscuit, water, and canned meat from his pocket.

The ration pack was made of a material much tougher than clothing, designed to withstand the close-quarters combat they might encounter.

The two also took out the self-heating food packages from their packs and ate.

They had been inside for so long and were very weary; this was their first time eating.

After eating quickly, the two tidied up and looked at the tunnel they were now in.

This tunnel was different from the ones they had been in before; it was a crossroads. Apart from the entrance they stood at, there were three other paths in front of them, and Ivier’s footprints on the ground had vanished, as if deliberately erased.

"Which way should we go?"

Ye Yun, propping himself up with his knife, looked towards the mouth of the crossroad.

He Ao walked up to the front of the three diverging paths.

He shone his flashlight on the ground.

To avoid leaving traces and exposing his tracks, Ivier had not altered anything about the three paths, leaving no signs at all.

"Could this guy have taken some other tunnel?"

Ye Yun looked around; indeed, there were no signs left anywhere.

"He must have used some method to avoid leaving any traces, but he definitely came in."

He Ao had carefully observed his surroundings during the fight and had noticed signs of battle in the pitch-black hall.

Ivier had not escaped the harassment of these bats either.

And the only place nearby illuminated with light that could drive away the bats was this very tunnel.

Holding the flashlight, he walked up to the front of the three diverging paths.

There were no markings on the walls of these three paths.

He Ao shone the flashlight deep into the paths and soon discovered something in the left path; he walked in, crouched down, and at a deeper part of this path, he picked up an iron plate whose color had mostly flaked off.

"What’s this?"

Ye Yun looked at the iron plate, its patterns and text were blurred, but the faint outline of a rail track vehicle could be discerned.

"Looks like some kind of subway or tram indicator."

He Ao held the iron plate against the wall at the entrance of the left path, where there was a faint indentation that seemed to be meant for fitting the plate.

"Is he looking for a tram?

Ye Yun instantly grasped the situation, clapped his hands together, "Right, our current area, although also part of the central zones, actually corresponds to the ring-shaped chambers outside. Theoretically, this zone’s function shouldn’t differ too much from that of the outer ring chambers; it wouldn’t hold the core control systems,

"And if Ivier wants to gain control of this spaceship, he would surely try to reach the most central control room or the like. If he tried to walk there, he would definitely encounter various monsters obstructing him, but it would be different with a tram...

"Considering the length of this ship and its many sections, it’s quite normal to have a tram that connects the core areas to facilitate the crew’s movements."

He paused, looking at He Ao, "He wants to use the tram to reach the more central zones!"

"Hmm."

He Ao nodded; his thoughts were essentially the same as Ye Yun’s summary. He glanced at the deep, dark passage.

Ye Yun also looked into the depths of the tunnel.

The two quickly made their way further down this path.

Main World·Locklen Street

Bright sunlight began to spill from the eastern horizon.

He Ao glanced at the empty coffee cup and exited the report interface on his computer, then looked at the time displayed.

6:00 AM sharp.

In theory, those who had entered the relic should have returned by now.

He looked out onto the street.

But for now, not one had come back.
