"I interrogated her for several hours, but she didn’t tell me who she gave the chip to."
Vinc smiled as he looked at He Ao, seemingly unaware of the increasingly icy demeanor, "So, I let her go, and just then I ran into your two ’brother and sister’. I had thought she’d given the chip to them, but in the end, they didn’t seem to know where the chip was either.
I interrogated them for several days. Your sister is quite smart, she pretended she couldn’t hold on any longer, and then misled me, making me believe that a gang of desperadoes took the data, which delayed me for several days, until you appeared at the Federal Bureau of Investigation."
"You don’t seem to be worried about the data leaking now, do you?"
He Ao gripped his sword, its tip pointing downward, advancing step by step towards Vinc. On his way here, almost everyone he encountered tried to kill him first, not capture him to question about the chip’s whereabouts.
"Some data, so what if it gets out?" Vinc pulled out a cigar, lit it,
"In this city, who doesn’t know about the killings at the mines? In this city, who doesn’t know that the Ice Wolf Gang is ruthless? The data you got just repeats what everyone already knows."
He laughed as he watched He Ao, "People aren’t unaware of the darkness; they just deceive themselves, living in a dream. Of course, we also do some work to maintain that dream. Perhaps you could try and see which website will allow you to post your video or files."
The so-called work of maintaining the dream is to kill any dark news in its cradle. As long as people don’t see the darkness, the beautiful dream can continue.
It looked like in the days before Nell went to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Vinc had already dealt with the most crucial financial groups controlling the media outlets.
These consortiums could easily control the transmission of information online.
In the previous Copy World mission, the video about the scandal of the former Mayor of Dawn City He Ao obtained couldn’t be transmitted through the network either.
The situation in Rock City was even worse than in Dawn City at that time; the City Hall and the Federal Bureau of Investigation had already been taken over, and there was no opposition party like Christos, who was both powerful and influential and leaned towards the lower class.
Evidence that only one person knows about, which can’t be sent over the network and can’t be received by investigative agencies, is practically the same as not having that evidence at all.
Vinc had fundamentally solved the threat posed by the information He Ao held in his hands.
The city was just as bad as expected.
Like the suffocating night air, making it hard to breathe.
He Ao carried his sword, silent, continuing to close in on Vinc.
"Actually, compared to that data, my boy,"
Vinc held the cigar in his mouth, stepping back with each step. He had reached the very edge of the rooftop; one more step and he would be facing a nearly hundred-meter drop.
Although Vinc appeared confident on the surface, he always maintained a safe distance from He Ao. When He Ao approached the bench, Vinc stood up and walked forward; when He Ao advanced, Vinc retreated.
He always maintained a position that was about the limit for an average C-level Transcendent with strength abilities; most C-level Transcendents acting would be instantly discovered by him, giving him the chance to escape by utilizing some mechanical power.
Theoretically, a person whose previous records were completely pure, no matter what Grace they received, their power would at most be C-level.
This was the source of Vinc’s unworried attitude; he seemed close to He Ao, but the distance was calculated precisely, always allowing him the chance to escape at any moment.
"I think you are a greater threat, your power is stronger than your sister’s, and your mind is better than hers, you are much more cunning than your sister, you being alive causes much more damage than those pieces of data."
Vinc looked at He Ao, "So that two hundred thousand wasn’t for buying the storage chip in your hands, it was for buying your life."
Super Memory, activate!
However, before he could finish speaking, a red sword light had already reached in front of him.
boom——
At the same time, a violent explosion scattered chunks of debris in the spot where He Ao had just been standing.
He Ao hadn’t guessed there were bombs under his feet, but considering the Old Geezer was ruthless enough to kill his own son, it wasn’t surprising he’d planted something dangerous in his own house.
Moreover, this guy, though acting very naturally, had been circling the spot where He Ao was standing, never once stepping into that area himself.
And He Ao had deliberately stood in that spot.
This was akin to handing the knife to Vince, who, with murder in his heart, was always looking for an opportunity to try it.
The explosion of the explosives was instantaneous, but He Ao had in fact caught a glimpse of the miniature detonator button between Vince’s fingers. The moment Vince finished speaking and was ready to detonate, He Ao had already dashed out.
Kang——
In the midst of scattered dust and smoke, the red sword light halted in mid-air.
It was a slender steel sword hidden in the sleeve, blocked by Vince’s arm, stopping the attacking sword light.
Both men looked up, simultaneously seeing a flash of surprise in the other’s eyes.
Vince seemed not to have anticipated He Ao’s immense strength; he’d estimated He Ao as an ordinary D-level, but He Ao’s physical capabilities had far surpassed an ordinary D-level, and with the amplification from Super Memory activation, he had nearly approached C-level.
He Ao’s surprise lay in the fact that Vince’s block hadn’t relied on any mechanical power. Apart from Adam’s Mecha form, no other small machinery could block the sudden strike in He Ao’s current state, meaning Vince relied on his own physical capabilities!
Yet no intelligence report had ever indicated Vince was a Transcendent, only that he was a skilled Mecha pilot.
But surprise aside, He Ao’s movements didn’t stop. He gently spun the other sword in his hand, turning it halfway in the air to switch from a forehand to a backhand grip and slicing towards Vince’s throat in an instant.
Vince immediately swung his arm, revealing a similar slender steel sword concealed in his other sleeve, blocking He Ao’s lethal strike.
However, he didn’t engage in prolonged combat; at the moment of clashing with the short sword, he retreated with the force of the impact and leaped back violently, landing in mid-air.
He was now on the edge of the rooftop, and his leap had taken him straight out of the rooftop garden, dropping him into the nearly hundred-meter expanse of open air.
He Ao didn’t pursue but instead took two steps back.
His attack had been both a test of Vince’s strength and an attempt to kill the villain who had caused the death of his fifth sister before the incident could begin.
But quite obviously, Vince, the Old Coin, had kept a trick up his sleeve; he was very likely a C-level Transcendent himself.
He Ao took a deep breath and, holding his sword, looked towards the night sky. Although it was a bit unexpected, it didn’t affect his plan; it was just a matter of killing sooner or later.
A surge of Qi blasted his clothes in an instant, scorching flames brushing past the green leaves on the edge of the garden, charring them slightly yellow.
A massive black behemoth rose slowly from the night, carrying two wild giant swords on its back, its jet engine at the waist spewing fierce flames.
This was a model of mecha with which He Ao was familiar.
The Hell Apostle Mech, a C-level Mecha created as a counterpart to the Seraphim.
He Ao had once piloted the same model in Kaye City to take down Yalid, a C-level God of Chaos’s Chosen.
He had not expected to find himself facing this mecha so soon.
It seemed this was Vinc’s mecha.
He Ao frowned and gripped his twin swords more tightly.
Just one Hell Apostle and a C-level Transcendent were not enough to pressure him.
It wasn’t sufficient.
Just then, he saw the glimmer of light in the distance; three mechas were flying toward him.
These mechas stayed at a distance, not coming closer. If Vinc could easily deal with the enemy, they would not intervene, but if Vinc felt he couldn’t handle it, they’d engage.
In the face of He Ao’s strength, Vinc was clearly uncertain.
"Kid, you’re indeed smart, but the first lesson I’m going to teach you is, never trust anyone."
Vinc’s laughter echoed from within the mecha in front of He Ao.
Subsequently, the mecha played a recording, the voice in it urgent and blurred:
"He’s about to hit the Ice Wolf Gang’s headquarters, his target is your boss, I have the exact time and location, transfer the money to me first, then I’ll tell you... no, it has to be money first... I can’t default on your payment, but you could default on mine... transfer the money first... two hundred thousand, not a penny less, or no deal..."
This voice was all too familiar to He Ao; it was Yoen’s voice.
"What precious friendship," Vinc said with a laugh, "you still don’t know how eagerly your ’good friend’ betrayed you, how desperate they were for money, do you?"
As he spoke, he played the recording again.
In fact, He Ao knew about it, because he had been right beside Yoen when the latter made the call, even directing him on what to say.
Even the two hundred thousand had been transferred directly into a new cryptocurrency account that He Ao had set up.
He also knew that Vinc was telling him this to buy time, waiting for the backup mechas to close in and complete the encirclement.
But this too was part of He Ao’s plan.
Four C-level mechas, but even when hunting rabbits, the lion uses all its might.
Vinc continued to play the recording, seemingly desperate to see shock and hysteria on He Ao’s face from the betrayal of a friend.
However, to his disappointment, He Ao remained calm throughout, as if the whole matter was of no consequence to him.
This disbelief was now Vinc’s to bear.
At the same time, a hint of unease rose in his heart.
He Ao took a couple of steps back as the remaining three mechas arrived, all Hell Apostles, hovering in the air, surrounding He Ao completely.
Along with these powerful mechas were a number of D-level mechanized bodies, along with some D-level mini-mechas, totaling nearly twenty D-level warriors, possibly hiding some Transcendents among them.
Four C-Levels and twenty D-Levels.
It seemed as though the Mining Consortium had put all their assets on the line.
"And where is the other mecha?"
Vinc asked in the internal chat.
"It was stolen."
A response came through.
Vinc fell into a brief silence, evidently at a loss for words.
A mecha was a massive thing; it wasn’t like a sausage that you could just pocket and walk away with—these are colossal machines many meters tall.
However, he didn’t inquire further; his priority at the moment was to dispose of He Ao.
He turned his gaze toward He Ao, raised the cannon barrel, and everyone else followed suit, aiming their weapons at He Ao.
He Ao tightened his grip on the twin swords.
At the moment, his strength was only D-Level, and with Super Memory, he could barely approach C-Level, but his opponents were genuine C-level combat mechas, along with a hardened C-Level Transcendent who hid his real strength.
An unprecedented, overwhelming pressure converged upon He Ao.
Except when he needed to borrow the power of a good friend.
It had been a long time since He Ao encountered such an almost insurmountable situation, the despair from deep within his soul made him shudder.
An uncontrollable excitement filled every cell of his being, it was his own and also from the ’Martial Artist’ Talent Sequence he now possessed.
Warriors are born out of confrontation with death.
His trap was set.
The battle was on the brink of erupting.
But just then, a massive Hell Apostle Mech dropped from the sky.
A familiar voice came from within the mecha, "Nell, I’ll cover our rear, you run."
