The place where the monster burst out from was an area where the streetlamp had long since broken, and no other light sources were present. In contrast, the far-off glow caused the darkness to appear even deeper.
He Ao led Yoen across the road and into the even more secluded alleys between the buildings.
This alleyway blocked out all light, as if plunging into the depths of hell.
Merely ten steps into the alley, a faint stench of blood mixed with rot wafted towards them.
Yoen followed behind He Ao, the pungent odor made him feel uneasy, but having experienced the decay that spread after the monsters’ death, he felt, perhaps, it wasn’t unbearable.
The ground beneath their feet seemed somewhat sticky, and the scent of blood grew stronger.
"Hiss—"
A shadow on all fours suddenly charged out of the darkness.
"Ah!"
Yoen’s body trembled; he looked ahead to He Ao and, with all his might, repressed the urge to flee.
He Ao paid no attention to Yoen’s reaction behind him—his sword flashed, and the approaching black shadow was cleaved in two, with blood splattering onto the side of his face.
A red radiance spilled from the body of the shadowy monster and flowed into He Ao’s twin swords.
The black substance within the bodies of these monsters wasn’t stored in objects but was directly blended into their bloodstream, turning their bodies into carriers.
Those behind the scenes spreading the corruption preferred to mix these divine-being-related black substances into certain items, then they’d seek out people high in inspiration to entrust with such items, rather than crudely infusing it into human bloodlines.
These shadowy monsters likely weren’t the masterpieces of the people behind the scenes, but probably ’minions’ created by the monster that He Ao had just killed.
He Ao continued forward and encountered several more ’minions,’ which he slew with a single sword strike.
After these minions died, their bodies rapidly decayed, losing all vitality.
He Ao kept pondering over where the power of these monsters, tainted by the ’divine being’ that had died, originated from.
The superhuman system of this world adhered to certain conservation laws.
Martial Arts required the absorption of supernatural power from nature, then transformed it into their own transcendent power.
As for Talent Sequences, they needed to ’snatch’ power from other transcendent beings.
As for preparing Secret Medicine, there were two main ways to obtain the primary ingredients: the first was hunting exotic beasts and acquiring their transcendent materials, and the second was killing individuals with corresponding Talent Sequences, waiting for their Talent Sequences to naturally separate.
In essence, it was the act of killing other life forms to take their transcendent power for themselves.
This method of acquiring supernatural power suggested that the Talent Sequences of the Copy World might have a fixed number; all of them had already been distributed.
Only when one person died could another have the chance to take their place and gain their power.
Thus, the acquisition of supernatural power in this world had a certain conservation nature: either transform the power of nature into one’s own, like Martial Arts, or snatch power from someone else, like with Talent Sequences.
However, practicing Martial Arts required a great deal of time, and it was clearly impossible for these monsters to snatch so many Talent Sequences.
Combining their unusual state, He Ao felt their power might come from another special method, ’Grace.’
Grace from a Divine Being.
Through sacrifices of souls and life, they received ’Grace.’
In fact, what most cultists did was essentially the same, only they had to communicate with divine beings through rituals to obtain ’Grace.’
The ’Doctor’ Ike from the Life Goddess Church had once told Vian.
In the occult sense, a ritual is actually a ’bridge’, a ’bridge’ that connects to unknown existences or transcends special conditions.
These monsters possess something inherently associated with that dead divine being, a natural ’bridge’ for communicating with that god.
They might even be extensions of the limbs of the deity.
All of them, their souls and even their flesh, belong to the divine being, so when they die, their bodies rapidly decay, because the deity has taken away their vitality.
In battle, He Ao briefly turned on Super Memory and glanced at it; the ’shadows’ of these ’minions’ souls had almost dissipated. Their souls had long been taken by the deity, leaving only some mad consciousness to drive their actions.
The lives they hunted became ’Sacrifices’ offered to the deity; they were moving altars.
As a ’Grace’, the deity endowed them with a portion of power to better offer their sacrifices.
In a sense, these monsters and minions constituted a Cultist Sect, a sect worshipping a deceased god.
The deity seemed dead, yet not entirely so.
Its remaining consciousness was still attempting to drive the creation of minions, plunder power, and try to awaken from eternal slumber.
This seemed to be one of the causes of the ’frequent death cases in Rock City’ as mentioned by the system.
But this might not be the whole truth.
Because Nell’s older brothers and sisters clearly didn’t die because of these monsters.
The person manipulating everything behind the scenes may not necessarily be a devout believer wishing to resurrect the deity.
He Ao had a premonition that the dark origins of all this might not be dominated by the Evil God,
Sometimes, the human heart is more terrifying than an Evil God.
"Bro, are we still going inside?"
Yoen followed behind He Ao, trembling a bit.
At first, he was so frightened he could hardly move, but unexpectedly, as He Ao struck down one small monster after another with his sword, they made it through, and Yoen suddenly felt as though he could go on, even though he was still a bit scared.
"We should be at the bottom now."
He Ao clove the last minion in two with his sword, and a faint red light absorbed into the blade. At this moment, the two swords were no longer as ordinary as before, entwined with a fierce and oppressing red light that made them seem sharply imposing.
They had already reached the end of the alley, where several shadows seemed to crouch in a corner.
He Ao turned on the flashlight from his wristband, shining it ahead. In the corner not far in front of him were several figures curled up in unconsciousness.
He walked over and examined them closely.
There were men and women among them, about a dozen or so. They were all curled up, frowning tightly, seemingly immersed in some sort of nightmare.
Beside them lay a pile of various old items.
Most of the items had been split open to reveal their pitch-black insides, but the red light was gone, leaving only a few intact ones in the corner.
"What are they doing with these people?"
Yoen, seeing there were indeed no more monster attacks, mustered his courage and approached the sleeping figures, "Hey, wake up."
But He Ao watched the items that had been split open on the ground. One item had just been slightly cut by a sharp instrument and hadn’t been fully opened. It seemed as though whoever had been cutting the item had left in a hurry due to some disturbance.
Yet, during He Ao’s recent battle, he had not encountered any minions wielding sharp tools.
Just then, a black shadow burst forth from the darkness, a cold blade in hand, charging directly at Yoen who was crouched beside the unconscious people.
