"Huh?"

Yoen looked up as He Ao tilted his head skyward, his movements instinctively mirrored.

However, He Ao suddenly pulled with great force, dragging him out of the room.

While Yoen was still puzzled, through the blur, he saw a somewhat swollen shadow descending from above, attacking his back.

It was an aged figure, its mouth split in a frenzied grin, eyes bulging as if they were about to pop out of their sockets.

The figure cackled madly at Yoen, reaching out a withered hand like a dried-up bone, about to seize Yoen’s neck.

"Uncle Jido?"

This somewhat swollen, elderly silhouette was none other than the neighbor who had shared the strange tale of knocking with Yoen earlier that day. His body normally thin, now appeared engorged with reddened flesh, resembling an obese bloated man.

His torso was fat, but his arms were thin to the bone, as if all the flesh had been absorbed by his body.

His legs had disappeared, replaced by a long tendril-like strip of flesh.

Crack—

Just as the hand was about to touch Yoen’s neck, a silver shortsword swung out, clashing against the incoming claw.

Simultaneously, Yoen felt the hand clutching his collar pull sharply, flinging him across the hall to land not far away.

Only then did he get a clear view of the monster that had attacked him.

It resembled a massive spider, with rows of fine legs clamped together, clinging tightly to the wall.

Above these slender legs were not a broad body but rather tentacle-like stalks, standing erect like the stems of a bouquet, each one connected to an upper half of a human body. These densely packed tentacles gathered together like an organized bouquet.

The ’flowers’ of this bouquet were twisted bodies of various shapes, stretching across the ceiling of the entire corridor like a viscous liquid, leaving only the dim hallway light.

When Yoen noticed these ’flowers,’ they, too, took notice of him.

They turned their heads, looking at Yoen, each revealing a hideous smile.

So the one knocking earlier wasn’t the neighbor, but these ’things.’

Yoen suddenly felt a chill of fear—if He Ao had arrived a little later, he might already have become one of these ’flowers.’

But at that moment, the monster had no time to bother with Yoen, as its attention was wholly fixed on He Ao following the attack.

One by one, the tentacles retracted, and the ’flower’ bodies fell from the ceiling, furiously rushing towards He Ao standing in the middle.

It was in that instant that He Ao drew another shortsword.

Crack—

"Are you guys insane, making such a racket in the middle of the night, banging and clanging like you’re hammering fancy decorations straight into your brain?"

A door not far from Yoen was suddenly pulled open, with the voice arriving before the person could be seen.

The bodies controlled by the tentacles were drawn to the noise. They twisted their heads, and the mass of heads piled upon each other, bloodshot eyes focusing on the opening door.

A robust middle-aged woman walked out of her room.

She stood in the doorway, confronting the cluster of headlike ’flowers.’

Time seemed to freeze in that second.

The woman’s expression cemented onto her face.

She pulled at the corners of her mouth, forcing a stiff smile, and gave a light wave to the heads that observed her,

"Hi?"

The next second, she dashed back into her room, "I must be dreaming, I need to go back to sleep right away."

The bodies flying in the air were close behind.

However, she needed to be one step faster and slammed the door shut just before the heads flew through.

With a clicking sound, the door was securely locked.

Muffled rapid breathing could be heard from behind the door.

Yoen hadn’t yet realized what was happening when he felt himself being pulled up.

He Ao cut down one of the bodies that rushed over and started running outside with Yoen in tow.

This monster seemed to be more interested in ’something inside’ the door and would prioritize attacking people coming out from there.

But if no one came out from inside, it would chase after those outside the door.

As He Ao ran out with Yoen, the monster scrambled along the walls and quickly pursued them.

This monster appeared to have ’eaten’ quite a few people, its strength approaching Level D.

However, He Ao could still easily kill this monster, but there was no need; the monster was still useful.

"There are gang members renting the room by the elevator door."

Yoen didn’t dare look back at the monster. His legs were shaking, and his limbs were weak; he was practically being dragged along by He Ao.

He thought that seeing He Ao use tweezers to remove a bullet had already stretched his understanding, but he hadn’t expected to witness such a ghostly monster today.

It was still understandable that a good friend had a hidden identity. After all, novels often had plots where someone appeared to be an apprentice on the surface but was a cold-hearted assassin in secret.

What with "Apprentice and the Thirty-Six School Flowers," "The Beautiful Landlady and the Apprentice," "I, appearing as an apprentice by day but an assassin by night, became the most sought-after gigolo in Dawn City"; Yoen always clicked to criticize these plotlines.

But what was up with this monster? Was this reasonable?

Yoen felt certain that either this world or himself had gone mad.

Just as He Ao was dragging Yoen to the elevator, the door next to it burst open, and several men with tattooed arms rushed out, pointing guns at He Ao,

"Nell, hand over what you’ve taken, and we can leave you a complete corpse."

Actually, when He Ao had first come up the elevator, they had seen him but couldn’t confirm his identity. Only when they saw He Ao pulling Yoen did they rush out.

As for the noise in the corridor, they didn’t care, nor did they want to.

But soon, they realized that perhaps they should have cared about the noise in the corridor.

He Ao tilted his head, signaling them to look behind.

As they followed the direction He Ao indicated, the distorted, stack of heads reflected in their pupils rapidly enlarged and swiftly engulfed them.

Taking advantage of the monster attacking the gang members, Yoen mustered his last bit of strength and sprinted to the elevator, pressing the button to light it up.

As long as they could hide inside the elevator, the monster wouldn’t be able to follow.

This was what he thought at the time.

Then he felt a powerful force beside him, pulling him toward the nearby emergency exit, and the dark, deep staircase appeared before him.

The lights in the emergency exit had long since broken, and the silent darkness looked as if it could devour everything.

Ahead lay the pitch-black stairs resembling a huge beast; behind, the monster was closing in. Yoen felt his legs trembling so much he could barely stand.

All he wanted now was to crawl back to the elevator.

However, He Ao didn’t give him the chance to choose and dragged him down the stairwell.

Sizzling—

Yoen thought he heard the sound of the monster swiftly climbing along the walls behind them.
