Chapter 296: Chapter 296: Entering the Factory (Major Chapter Please Favorite, Subscribe, and Vote for Monthly Tickets)
The gaunt man glanced around before his gaze settled on the gilded sign of "Kyle Manufacturing Company" on the side.
Then he slowly walked over, stopping outside the access control gate. He looked at the two black-clothed security guards by the entrance, "Is this the Kyle Manufacturing Company? Are you hiring?"
Just as the tall man was about to speak, his lean companion reached out to stop him with a smile,
"We’re hiring, always hiring. Are you a Wilderness Wanderer? Do you have an Introducer?"
This gaunt man was none other than He Ao.
He looked at the man whose face was nearly splintered by his grin, nodded slightly, and calmly said, "I learned about this place from Wilderness Hunters like Hank, but I found my way here on my own."
"No Introducer, then?"
The lean man chuckled, then spoke softly, "Wait a moment, I need to go back and check which positions are currently open."
"Sorry, this place..."
The tall man beside the lean man looked at He Ao, hesitated for a moment, then slowly began to speak.
But he was cut off mid-sentence as the lean man pulled him back, "Just wait here, we’ll check for you."
He Ao watched them enter the nearby security booth and turn on the computer inside.
The pedestrian access gate remained closed, and He Ao didn’t try to force his way through. Instead, he stood outside the gate, quietly waiting for them.
······
"Aren’t you afraid that this is the guy who just killed those three Wilderness Hunters? A Wilderness Wanderer shows up on his own just like that; isn’t that suspicious?"
Inside the security booth, the tall man spoke softly.
"Anyone who can take out three Wilderness Hunters is certainly a force to be reckoned with," the lean man rolled his eyes,
"We all know it’s suspicious, and he surely knows it’s suspicious, so he definitely wouldn’t come out in the open like this. Our people are all around here; if he causes any trouble, he will be shot into a sieve. Would you dare to walk over this openly?"
"I..."
The tall man opened his mouth but ultimately said nothing.
If it were him, he really wouldn’t dare. The risk was too great. With that kind of power, it would be less risky to just climb over the fence than to walk in like this.
"You’re just inexperienced,"
The lean man looked at the tall man, who had nothing to say, and laughed, "Every once in a while, there are these types who think they’re so smart, avoiding Wilderness Hunters and sneaking into the factory to gather information, thinking they can bypass the traps set by Wilderness Hunters. Little do they know, the problem isn’t with the Wilderness Hunters, but directly with the factory itself."
As he spoke, he tapped a few times on the computer, opened a webpage, and entered Hank’s name.
"The name’s correct, and this Hank has no connection to the dead Wilderness Hunters; they’re not from the same factory area.
It seems this Wanderer really was referred to our factory by someone and came here on the sly. That Wilderness Hunter is foolish too; letting such crucial information as the factory address slip out."
The lean man turned, smiling, and clapped the tall man on the shoulder, "A windfall! Later, I’ll share ten percent of the referral fee with you, fair is fair."
He picked up the tablet, ready to go out.
But the tall man suddenly stopped him, "These Wilderness Wanderers that come into the factory, they’re going to die, right?"
"Wouldn’t they die out in the wilderness?" the lean man retorted with a mocking laugh. He pushed the tall man aside, "Rather than dying out there, it’s better for them to earn me some money in the factory for a couple of years. Who knows, they might even thank me for letting them live a few more years."
He pushed the tall man back into the security booth and shut the door with one hand, "I’ll take him in. You cover the gate for me for a bit, and I’ll give you a bigger share of the referral fee."
The tall man watched the lean man leave and sighed softly.
······
Upon leaving the security booth, the lean man walked towards He Ao with a full smile, "Here’s the thing, we need to register some information. May I have your name, please?"
"Ronald."
He Ao replied calmly.
The lean man entered this name into the form.
He then asked for some basic information, and as He Ao watched him fill out the form on the tablet, the man entered a string of numbers in the Introducer field, presumably his own Introducer ID code.
Once everything was done, the lean man opened the turnstile and let He Ao in, "Welcome to Kyle Manufacturing Factory. I’ll take you to the manager now; he’ll handle the procedures for you to enter the factory."
With that, he led He Ao forward.
"Is the hiring process always this simple?"
He Ao followed him calmly, observing the surroundings and asked casually.
Trucks drove by him, and as he looked around, he could see a somewhat shorter building beside the factory, apparently a warehouse, with dozens of trucks parked densely below the warehouse.
"Is this your first time in the city?"
The lean man asked softly.
"No, but I haven’t gone through the job-seeking process before."
Even though He Ao had many memories about job hunting from other characters’ memories, this was his first time seeking work in Dawn City on his own.
"That’s how it is around here in the city, the pace is very fast,"
The lean man laughed, saying casually.
He Ao could tell from the fluent lies he knew the man was lying and that he had likely deceived many Wilderness Wanderers in the same manner before, but He Ao didn’t expose him.
The two continued forward, and the lean man took a route that kept close to the fence topped with high-voltage wires, seemingly unwilling to be seen abandoning his post.
The pair circled around the building and arrived at the back of the factory. From a distance, they could see a small door, exactly as the young man had mentioned before. In front of the door was a long, narrow corridor lined with sharp iron thorn barricades, and two tall men in suits and black clothes stood guard at the entrance.
The lean man told He Ao to wait where he was and took out a pack of quality cigarettes, walking forward first.
······
The black-clothed man on the left looked at the lean man coming over and asked with some confusion, "Aren’t you supposed to be guarding the main gate?"
"I just stepped out to use the bathroom," the gaunt man said with an apologetic smile, pulling out two packs of cigarettes and giving one to the other man, asking, "I can’t go in now, can I?"
"After what happened today, the boss is furious; no one is allowed in."
The man in black spoke calmly.
"Not even if I bring in a new Wilderness Wanderer?"
The gaunt man asked in a low voice.
"These Wilderness Wanderers are all very dangerous," the man in black’s face darkened, "a Class D Mechanically Modified Person died today. The boss brought guests over, and if anything goes wrong, we can’t bear the responsibility.
You brought a Wilderness Wanderer in at this time? You know it’s against the faction rules for our own people to play Introducer, right? Do you want to die?"
It was permitted within the faction to bring in Wilderness Wanderers, but there was only a single introduction fee, and Wanderers were directly managed by the faction afterwards, eliminating any subsequent income, which was much less than what could be made as an Introducer.
Therefore, some crafty individuals started to look for ways to secretly act as Introducers, not only taking the introduction fee but also a continuous income.
But this approach was fundamentally against the rules, and if discovered by the faction, there was only one outcome: death.
However, management within the faction wasn’t that strict.
A roll of banknotes was stuffed into the man in black’s hand.
The man in black looked down at the banknotes in his hand, weighed them, and pocketed them, "Come back in an hour, by then the boss will probably have left."
"With things this tight, where can I stash someone for an hour?"
The gaunt man was taken aback.
"Then that’s not my problem. If it really won’t work, just let the person go,"
The man in black waved his hand, gesturing for the gaunt man to leave quickly, "If you leave your post for much longer, and the boss finds out, I’m afraid you won’t live to see the sun tomorrow."
The gaunt man gave him a look, bit his lip, and turned to walk away.
Now, with watchful eyes everywhere, there was no place he could hide He Ao, and if it really came down to it, he’d have to release him and find another way to deceive him into coming later.
However, since the man had connections with the Wilderness Hunter, once driven out, he would most likely contact that Wilderness Hunter named Hank again.
In that case, it would be very difficult for him to reap those benefits again.
Not having managed to bring the man inside, he had also taken a financial loss.
Walking along, the gaunt man spat in disgust, "Bad luck."
······
In a corner against the wall.
"There’s been a bit of trouble; can’t get in now."
The gaunt man looked at He Ao, his gaze lingering on the neat and fine fur coat He Ao was wearing.
He hadn’t looked closely before, but now he suddenly realized that the fur coat seemed to be made of genuine leather.
He felt his body surge with excitement.
Such a pristine fur coat, in the luxury shops of Eighth Avenue, would be priced in the tens of thousands.
He suddenly had a brilliant new idea, one that could not only recoup his losses but also make him a tidy profit.
Moreover, this plan wouldn’t take much time and wouldn’t delay his return to the gate.
Even,
He felt for the inner pocket of his clothes, where there was a cold pistol.
He could present the dead body of this Wilderness Wanderer as that of a vagrant trying to break into the factory, and himself as the hero who’d gained the Wanderer’s trust with the pretext of ’getting into the factory’ only to turn and kill him.
Maybe, he could even get a bonus for it.
In that moment, all the logic aligned.
This was the choice that maximized his benefits.
The gaunt man smiled and said to He Ao, "Turn around, I’ve got a way that can get you in."
He Ao looked at him deeply, then turned around.
The gaunt man pulled out a handgun from his chest and slowly aimed it at the back of He Ao’s head.
"Don’t move, this will be quick..."
His index finger touched the trigger.
"Hold on a moment."
He Ao suddenly said softly.
The gaunt man was startled, thinking his move had been discovered. He wasn’t good with guns, and if He Ao moved, he’d miss his shot.
Then he watched as He Ao, with his back to him, took two steps to the left.
"Now it’s good."
He Ao said calmly.
This was the surveillance dead angle.
"What a hassle."
The gaunt man pretended to be annoyed and cursed, then moved behind He Ao and aimed at the back of his head again.
Just as he was about to pull the trigger,
He Ao suddenly spoke again,
"Hold on a moment."
This time, he had no chance to react.
A flash of silver sword light passed by.
