Chapter 293: Chapter 293: I Ask, You Answer (Major Chapter Please Favorite, Subscribe, and Vote for Monthly Tickets)

The two burly men approached, smiling, and asked He Ao, "Friend, you’re from the wilderness? Want to stay in the city for a long time?"

"Yeah."

He Ao nodded slightly.

The two men exchanged glances, both spotting the smirk at the corner of each other’s eyes. The one on the left said, "I’ve got a job here with room and board included; you can stay in the city for the long term. Interested?"

He Ao nodded slightly again.

The men chuckled, closing the gap with quick strides to He Ao’s side.

Then they both made their move, attempting to pin He Ao down, "Come with us then."

He Ao glanced at them and stepped back, evading their move.

One of the burly men noted He Ao’s agile movements and frowned.

The other one, meanwhile, smoothly drew a gun,

"Brother, since you want to stay in the city but have no means, and probably haven’t had an easy time in the wilderness, we’re offering you a job that provides food and shelter. You just do your part, and you won’t worry about exotic beast attacks anymore. It’s a good deal for you, so why not come with us? It’ll be comfortable for both you and us."

"What if I’m not willing?"

He Ao responded with a smile.

These two men were so brazen, unabashedly grabbing people right on the streets.

It could only mean that they had captured too many people too often, turning it into a habit, and had mostly succeeded in their endeavors, which led to their reckless behavior.

In recent years, due to the migration of A-level exotic beasts, the overall territory of the beast herds had shifted.

Many Wanderer families and Wanderer Camps along the way were forced to relocate due to the arrival of powerful beasts, as their once safe grounds became perilous. During these relocations, many Wilderness Wanderers encountered exotic beast attacks, got separated from the main troops, and had to wander alone in the dangerous wilderness.

In fact, the increase in external Wanderers at Ronald’s camp in the past few years was due to this very reason. At first, everyone thought it was a riot of beasts until the news of the A-level exotic beasts’ migration came out, and then put the pieces together.

Those Wilderness Wanderers who became isolated due to exotic beast attacks, unless they were powerful, generally could not survive in the wilderness. A small portion of them were absorbed by stable Wanderer Camps or families, but the majority were forced into the cities.

Given the prosperity that the factory alone commanded an entire building, these Wilderness Hunters must have caught quite a few such Wilderness Wanderers over the years.

However, their line of thinking was quite logical; real powerhouses could survive in the wilderness and would not desperately want to stay in the city.

Those seeking to stay in the city and find work were the ones who couldn’t face the dangers of the wild alone and, once expelled from the city, would likely become fodder for exotic beasts—helpless, isolated Wilderness Wanderers.

They must now be mistaking He Ao for such a Wilderness Wanderer.

Fate often preys on the vulnerable, and misfortune seeks out the downtrodden.

These Wilderness Hunters only captured those helpless Wanderers who couldn’t resist, some of whom might even be foolishly deceived.

"You’ll have to be willing, whether you like it or not,"

The muscular man sneered, pointing the gun at He Ao.

"His leather coat is of excellent quality."

At this moment, the other burly man leaned in and whispered into the gun-wielding man’s ear.

Hearing this, the gun-wielding man paused to take a closer look at the leather coat on He Ao.

He suddenly stopped.

A desolate Wilderness Wanderer couldn’t possibly wear such an expensively looking leather coat.

The person could either be from a significant force in the wilderness or a powerful figure.

The two burly men exchanged glances, realizing they had gotten too accustomed to capturing people, taking joy in what now seemed to be a mistake in picking the wrong target.

But now that they had offended him,

If he was a Wilderness Wanderer, the rules of the wilderness were cruel.

Could they simply stop now, apologize, and he would legally let them off the hook?

Better to strike first.

Such a person would generally have cash and jewelry on them, killing and looting would make for a more lucrative gain than capturing a few Wilderness Wanderers.

The two clearly weren’t novices at this sort of thing, exchanging knowing looks.

The gun-wielding man quickly put the weapon away,

"My apologies, we didn’t realize you were someone of such stature···"

As he spoke, he moved forward, closing in on He Ao.

His body just blocked the other man from view.

The other man pulled out a silver long-barreled gun, loading a syringe bullet into it.

The syringe was filled with a neurotoxin extracted from toxic exotic beasts; one shot could kill a E-level exotic beast on the spot, and even a C-level beast would suffer nerve damage, making it difficult to move.

This was their most prized possession, saved up over many years.

Meanwhile, the man approaching He Ao reached behind him, gripping the dagger belted at his waist,

He Ao smiled, eyeing the advancing man, and placed his hand on the hilt of the curved blade hanging at his right side.

Just then, the sound of urgent footsteps came from afar,

A thin figure stumbled toward He Ao’s direction,

This time He Ao got a clear look at him.

The newcomer was not particularly tall, around five foot six, looking like a youth not yet fully grown, with most of his hair already turned white, his face gaunt and skin clinging to his bones leaving only scant muscle in between.

He was dressed in a faded white, pocket-less uniform resembling prison garb, the fabric thin; his dark skin indicated that he was a Wilderness Wanderer who had grown up in the wild.

He was now running desperately forward, but his pace was slowing, as if he had reached the limit of his strength.

"Catch him."

"Kill him."

Behind him came the clamor of cursing voices.

Seven or eight figures were chasing him from the distance, rapidly closing the gap between them and the boy.

There were far more people than those who had just run out through the small gate.

Clearly, someone had blocked the boy’s path ahead, forcing him to turn back.

Blocked ahead and pursued from behind.

In his condition, managing to escape capture despite being sandwiched like this, the boy qualified as a fairly competent hunter.

As the sounds from behind drew nearer, the boy gritted his teeth and suddenly accelerated, gradually putting distance between himself and those behind him once again.

But before he could feel relieved, a massive figure soared out from behind him, overtaking the pursuing shadows, and landed right behind the boy.

Still running, the boy hadn’t had time to react when he was grabbed by the shoulder and hoisted up.

"Running, still running? You’re somewhat skilled, kid."

Now the towering figure was fully revealed: a muscular man with what appeared to be a normal right arm, while his left was a huge mechanical arm. He cursed, then tossed the boy on the ground like trash.

The boy fell hard and struggled to get up, "I beg you, don’t take me back. If I go on like this, I really will die."

"Die, dying isn’t so easy," the large man spat, laughing. "If you don’t want to go back to the factory, then I’ll report to the City Defense Army and let them chase you, the visa-expired fella, out of the city, shall I?"

"No, don’t! I’ll die in the wilderness too."

The boy, as if recalling some horrifying thing, attempted to get up and run again, but was immediately pinned down by the large man’s foot.

"The factory, the factory you dislike, the wilderness, the wilderness you dislike. You little thing, not tall, but quite greedy, huh?"

The large man sneered, pulling out an iron chain from his waist.

Just then, he spotted He Ao along with two burly men not far ahead.

His gaze settled on the leather coat that He Ao was wearing.

He then wrapped the boy with an iron chain, turned his head, and shouted, "I’ve caught the guy, I’ll take him back myself, you all go back first."

"Alright!"

A response came from the distance; the chasing figures slowly halted and started to head back, seemingly in the direction closer to their point of return.

The large man seemed aware of this, to the point where at that moment, the spot was only occupied by him, the boy, the two burly men, and He Ao.

The restrained boy also noticed He Ao, opened his mouth, and hoarsely shouted, "Uncle, run!"

But before he could continue, the large man slammed him to the ground, the impact so harsh he couldn’t make a sound.

In the meantime, the large man had already leaped out, landing behind He Ao in the blink of an eye.

He seemed to be old friends with the two burly men.

The burly man standing behind gestured a five with his hand toward him.

The large man shook his head and stretched out both hands, indicating a seven.

The burly man’s expression darkened, but he nodded slightly.

During this exchange, He Ao remained silent the whole time, not saying a word.

The burly man who approached him was somewhat unsettled by his calm gaze, hesitating for a moment.

The large man approaching from behind He Ao saw this scene and sneered,

"What are you afraid of? With a D-level Mechanized Body like mine, plus what you have up your sleeves, can’t we deal with this Wilderness Wanderer? At worst, he’s D-level. Could a C-level big shot dawdle around with you this long? Or is he one of those law-abiding, non-murderous Wilderness Hunters?"

He spat and commanded, "Go."

"It’s over,"

the bound boy mouthed—the cruelty of the large man was something he had witnessed.

Many Wilderness Wanderers had died at his hands in the factory, sometimes he would even hang the escaping wanderers in the corridor and open up their chests while they were still alive.

The boy looked at He Ao, who stood unmoving, and shouted in despair, "Uncle, run!"

The dim streetlight illuminated the side of the boy’s face.

He Ao lifted his head and smiled gently at the boy.

A flash of silvery sword light burst forth in an instant, like the cold moonlight, shining upon the assailant’s chest.

Bright red blood bloomed like roses, alongside the surge of mechanical pulses.

The sword light pierced through the chests of the two burly men, then lightly circled back, effortlessly penetrating the sturdy Mechanized Body and hitting the core of its energy source.

Sizzling

That was the sound of the uncontrollable energy crackling under the moonlight.

He Ao drew his short sword, took a few steps forward, and stopped in front of the boy.

All this seemed to happen slowly, yet swiftly.

In the blink of an eye, the boy saw the ’uncle’ he had been worried about step out of the encirclement and arrive in front of him.

A silvery sword light briefly severed the iron chains binding the boy.

Fierce flames burst behind He Ao; the sound of the energy core exploding.

A massive mechanical arm flew out of the flames, rolled on the ground, and came to a halt beside the boy.

He Ao sheathed his sword and calmly looked at the boy.

"I ask, you answer."
