When He Ao entered Dawn City past one o’clock at night, most service businesses had already closed, so he didn’t start his investigation right away. Instead, he found a hotel with Penny and booked two rooms.
Checking into the hotel went smoothly: register a name, show a visa, pay the room fee, and that was all.
He Ao wasn’t short on money.
Even though the camp had gradually declined since Ronald’s father had passed away.
But as a trading area once famous in the nearby wilderness, with a gathering of thousands of large nomadic groups, the camp’s income wasn’t low.
Even though most of these funds were exchanged for weapons and electronic equipment, the remainder, kept as a reserve, had accumulated to a substantial amount over time.
Most of this money was kept in the camp’s cryptocurrency account, while a smaller portion in cash was stored at the camp. When the wanderers migrated, they took this cash with them.
On this trip, He Ao had taken a portion of that cash with him.
Of course, he now also had control over the camp’s cryptocurrency account.
It seemed that the Wilderness Wanderers were unable to open accounts in the city banks, at least, Ronald’s father had never opened an account with any major city bank. All the money was either exchanged for supplies as much as possible, or it went into a cryptocurrency account, or was kept in cash.
After showing Penny how to use the facilities in the hotel, He Ao took a shower, turned on the TV, grabbed a bottle of red wine from the room’s minibar, pulled out the cork, poured the wine into a glass, and carried the glass over to the room’s enormous floor-to-ceiling window.
The two rooms He Ao picked were luxury suites on the 97th floor, among the hotel’s suites with the best views.
Standing before this vast window, the sparkling city was reflected in He Ao’s pupils.
Although it was deep into the night, the majority of the tall buildings maintained their bright, twinkling exterior lights.
Light mingled with darkness, creating a majestic metropolis.
The prosperity of Dawn City far exceeded that of Kaye City. Even if a behemoth like Nolanka were placed in Dawn City, it would only become one of Dawn City’s largest companies, not the ruler of Dawn City.
He Ao lowered his gaze, looking down at his feet.
Looking down from such a high floor, the wide vehicles below shrank to mere pinpoints of light. Countless such points strung together, forming a long river of light dots.
That was the river where wealth flowed.
"Mr. Kristos, this is your second visit to ’Fifteen Minutes’. Do you have anything to say to our audience?"
"Hello everyone, I’m back again. This time, I’ve come one step closer to the goal I declared last time, one step closer to changing this city together."
The sounds of a man and a woman’s Q&A came from behind.
He Ao turned around to look at the TV behind him.
The TV was replaying the popular program ’Fifteen Minutes’.
The show’s former host was Monica, Roy’s ex-girlfriend, and a member of the Witch Church. She had been killed by He Ao in Heaven Nord’s rooftop garden.
Although Monica was dead, ’Fifteen Minutes’ continued to air, just with a younger and prettier host.
However, the current ’Fifteen Minutes’ didn’t seem to be as hot as it once was.
"Mr. Kristos, in a few days you’ll be sworn in as the Mayor of Dawn City, but there seems to be many situations against you recently. In just the past week, there have been three protests against your inauguration, and some opponents even nearly came to blows with your supporters on the streets."
The host looked at Christos with a smile, "How do you view these matters? After taking office, will you restrain the behavior of your supporters?"
Upon hearing this question, Christos’s gaze sharpened slightly.
He Ao, who was sitting in front of the television, also smiled and took a sip of his drink.
This question was a trap in itself; answering that he would restrain them would mean harming his supporters and affecting his approval ratings.
Answering that he wouldn’t meant falling into another trap, ’You are now the Mayor of Dawn City, the theoretical supreme leader of the city. If you don’t restrain your supporters, are you going to use your authority to cover for them?’ This would become a stain on his reputation.
It seemed Christos had not anticipated such a question in this interview; he answered with a smile,
"In fact, I do not regard those who oppose me as ’opponents’. To be precise, they are ’potential supporters who have not yet benefited from my policies’. Recently, many newspapers and programs have been sensationalizing that my governance strategy is radical and will upset the stability of Dawn City, harming the interests of the middle class and some small business owners.
But in reality, I am a typical moderate. My administration is fundamentally about enabling the majority of Dawn City’s residents to live a better life."
"You mean..."
The host, seeing how Christos had sidestepped the trap, immediately interrupted, wanting to continue with her questions.
"Please let me finish," but his reply cut her off. The man in the silver suit revealed a gentle and convincing smile, and continued,
"Fundamentally speaking, the majority of the ’middle class’ also suffer oppression by the consortiums. Even though they earn high salaries, they constantly worry about unemployment, being unable to afford their substantial loans, and in order to appear ’valuable’, they often have to work far beyond regular hours.
As for small business owners, they can only scrape by in business domains that the consortiums disregard. Once they create exceptional products, they face low-price suppression or malicious acquisition from consortiums.
In fact, these two groups will benefit from my policies of ’curbing the consortiums, protecting labourers’. They oppose me now only because they have not yet realized this.
Once they acknowledge that I am working on their behalf, they will firmly support me.
So I do not call them ’opponents’; they are simply my ’potential supporters’."
Christos successfully turned what was an interview against him into his own ’personal opinion show’, leveraging the heat of ’Fifteen Minutes’ to refute some of the negative views recently aired on news programs, conveying his theories to potential supporters.
He Ao took another sip of his drink and turned off the television.
Although Christos’s abilities were indeed superior, what he was up against was the Consortium Alliance, with resources far beyond his own.
——
As the moon sets and the sun rises, the night passes without dreams.
The next morning, He Ao left the hotel early with Penny.
If one is to survive in the city, the first thing to do is find a job that can provide for oneself.
He Ao needed to know how difficult it was for a Wilderness Wanderer to find work in Dawn City, so he used a search engine to find a nearby job placement agency with good reviews and went to inquire directly.
Job placement agencies are intermediary organizations that help the unemployed or jobless find work, profiting from referral fees or subsidies from the city hall.
"Please tell me your social security numbers... Are you Wilderness Wanderers?"
The worker responsible for receiving He Ao and his companion was a full-figured woman in her thirties, who looked up from the documents in surprise and said, "Sorry, we don’t have any jobs suitable for Wilderness Wanderers here."
