[Please enter your passport number.]
[Please enter the city that issued your passport.]
A passport is a Federation-authorized identity document, and theoretically, every Federation citizen should have one.
But a passport generally cannot serve as a proper citizen identity document.
The reason is simple: the passports issued by the various fortress cities of the Federation are completely independent, and most cities are unwilling to share this population data with the Federal Central Government or other cities.
So, the passport of a certain city only has the ability to verify identities within that city.
But does the Federation have a document capable of verifying a person’s identity across the entire Federation?
Yes, it does.
It is the Federation Social Security Card.
The Federation Social Security Group was established with the leading support of the Federal Central Government and funded by major conglomerates as a private social insurance group.
Its business covers every city in the Federation.
Almost every Federation citizen has a unique nine-digit social security number that represents their identity.
This social security number enters the credit system of the Social Security Group.
In this credit system, the accumulated credit records of the social security number holder are marked as a credit score.
All major financial institutions recognize this credit score and consider it as an important indicator for granting loans and benefits.
Many companies also treat this credit score as an essential part of employment background checks when hiring new staff,
In the Federation, the social security card is extremely important.
He Ao flipped through the pages and the next blank to fill in was,
[Please enter your social security card number.]
"Leader, what are these passport and social security card numbers? I don’t have any," Penny leaned over and asked.
"Just keep flipping," He Ao calmly flipped through the form pages, "select the ’Wilderness Wanderer’ option."
"Oh! Okay!"
Penny nodded, continued flipping through the form, and then lightly made her selection, "Eh, there are more forms now."
"Leader, he’s asking what we’re coming to the city for? Study, travel, trade..."
"Select travel."
"Right! He’s asking for my spouse’s name..."
"Select ’no spouse’."
"This one, this one, asks if we have relatives in the city?"
"Select ’none’."
"He’s asking how long we plan to stay in Dawn City."
"Select ’less than seven days’."
...
The entry application was not complicated in itself, but Penny had to ask about nearly every question, and in the end, it took them half an hour to fill it out completely.
Penny’s loud exclamations also attracted some sideways glances from others.
But almost everyone entering the city here was either a Wilderness Hunter or part of a small merchant caravan wandering the wilderness, so they were all familiar with Wilderness Wanderers and did not find the identities of He Ao and his companion strange.
Unlike the unobstructed entry of large trucks, the inspection for smaller vehicles at this gate was much stricter.
He Ao waited in line for about another half-hour before it was their turn for the security check.
Since they didn’t bring anything with them this time and had no vehicle, their security check was much simpler.
First, they passed through a gateway detector.
This detector could identify whether one is carrying metal weapons or prohibited items, as well as whether there are parasitic lifeforms attached to a person.
Firearms and other hot weapons, if not registered, are not allowed in the city, while cold weapons like curved knives are not considered prohibited.
Fully armed City Defense Army soldiers stood on both sides of the entire passage, and guiding He Ao and Penny was a lifelike intelligent robot.
After passing through the gateway detector, the next step was to enter one of the small silver rooms.
He Ao chose a room and walked in.
Inside the room, there was only a medical robot responsible for blood sampling.
Dense cameras lined the entire room to ensure that there was no cheating during the blood sampling.
He Ao approached the medical robot and extended his hand.
The robot worked swiftly, completing the sampling in a few seconds, then signaled for He Ao to leave.
The blood and skin cell samples collected here would be sent to the City Defense Army’s life analysis instrument for analysis to verify whether the individual is human and alive.
This is to prevent exotic beasts from sneaking into the city.
After leaving the sampling room, the next door led to the observation room. He Ao and Penny had to wait there for an hour for the analysis results.
There were not only the two of them in the observation room; many people who had been ahead of them in line were also waiting there.
No sooner had He Ao sat down than a gaunt man with dark skin approached him.
At a glance, this man was a typical Wilderness Hunter.
In fact, the method to distinguish city dwellers, Wilderness Hunters, and Wilderness Wanderers was quite simple.
Wilderness Wanderers, having battled exotic beasts and wild animals since childhood in the wilderness, generally had more robust builds and darker skin. Even the seemingly adorable Penny, if she tensed her arm, would reveal a layer of muscle.
City dwellers, on the contrary, enjoyed various convenient modes of transportation, which is why they generally appeared weaker or simply overweight, with lighter and more delicate skin. Even those who keep fit had ’athletic’ muscles rather than bulky ones, and the difference was easy to spot.
Wilderness Hunters struck a balance between the two, most of them lean in stature but not lacking in muscle, their skin tanned, yet not as dark.
Of course, there was another clear distinction, Wilderness Wanderers preferred clothing made of fur because for wanderers, fur was durable, warm, and easy to acquire; the textiles from the city were overpriced and not as practical as fur.
Wilderness Hunters, on the other hand, generally wore textiles or synthetic leather garments because they could easily buy industrial products at low prices and then sell the furs from the wilderness at high prices.
They themselves were reluctant to wear fur.
The man before them was also wearing a faux leather jacket.
"The two of you, are you Wilderness Wanderers? Which camp are you from? Perhaps I’ve visited your camp before?"
The man walked over and offered He Ao a cigarette.
He Ao waved his hand to indicate he didn’t smoke.
Ronald indeed had no habit of smoking, but generally, he wouldn’t accept gifts from unfamiliar Wilderness Hunters either.
Because you never know if the cigarette might contain a large dose of sedatives.
"Are you here to have fun in the city?"
Seeing He Ao refuse the cigarette, the man wasn’t upset; instead, he chuckled, put the cigarette in his mouth without lighting it, and winked at He Ao, "There’s a lot more fun to be had in the city than in the wilderness."
"Just here to have fun for a few days."
He Ao smiled and nodded, appearing like a naive country folk.
Penny glanced at her Leader, sitting beside him innocently and quietly, not speaking a word, looking every bit the part of the country folk’s silly little sister.
The man also glanced at Penny, opened his mouth as if wanting to ask something, but ultimately didn’t, instead pulling a business card from his clothes and handing it to He Ao,
"I’m York. I can offer services for a fee. If you run into any troubles in the city, you can call me. I can do most things, like introducing you to some entertainment venues or helping you find a place to stay or work."
As he said this, his wristband alarm went off, "My observation time is up, so I’ll head out. I wish you a fun time in Dawn City."
He slipped the business card into He Ao’s hand and walked out of the observation room.
He Ao looked at the business card in his hand, which read:
[Wilderness Hunter/Private Investigator York]
[No. 135 on 172nd Street]
Below it was York’s phone number.
He Ao thought for a moment and tucked away the business card.
The two of them continued to wait quietly until their observation time was over. The monitor didn’t notify them to undergo any additional checks, which meant they had passed the observation.
The two of them walked out of the observation room.
Outside the observation room was a bustling hall, and their exit was strategically placed to view a large screen, which displayed who should report to which window for service.
He Ao and Penny were at window 7.
There was no one else at window 7 at the moment, and behind the bulletproof glass sat a chubby male employee in a white uniform. He glanced at He Ao and Penny, then at his computer screen,
"Wilderness Wanderers? Traveling in Dawn City?"
"Yes."
He Ao gave a slight nod.
"Do you have a smart wristband?"
The employee glanced at He Ao and then slid a silver metal block over the computer scanner. A red stamp appeared on the document about He Ao on the display.
"Yes."
He Ao raised his wristband.
"Once you enter Dawn City, you are required to abide by Dawn City’s laws. Any violation of the law will lead to deportation or even imprisonment,"
The employee looked up and pressed a button next to him. A silver metal disc in front of He Ao emitted a faint glow, "Please place your wristband in the illuminated ring."
He Ao placed his wristband in the ring.
As he did so, his wristband vibrated briefly.
A document was pushed to his wristband.
"This is your visa document. If you encounter any events in the city, this document will certify your legal identity. According to Federation law, your rights will be protected,"
explained the employee. "The second page of the document contains the phone number for the Dawn City Legal Aid Office. You can contact them with any issues for legal assistance. Below the Office’s phone number are links to the Federal Ministry of Justice and the Dawn City Judicial Bureau’s official websites, where you can browse any law from the Federation and Dawn City.
You can also visit the official website of the Dawn City Tourism Bureau to obtain a detailed travel guide to Dawn City. I wish you a pleasant journey and a fun time."
"Thank you."
He Ao replied with a gentle nod and left the window.
Penny followed, completing the visa process in a dazed mimicry.
Then He Ao led her towards the exit of the hall.
It was only when they arrived at the hall’s entrance and saw the wide street and bustling high-rises outside that the young girl realized, "Leader, are we in the city now?"
"Yes."
He Ao nodded gently and activated the map on his wristband.
"It’s so simple..."
Penny’s mind still felt foggy; she had thought that entering the city would be like traversing a mountain of knives and a sea of flames, enduring many trials and challenges.
But it seemed they had entered quite casually.
The city dweller behind the glass hadn’t given them any trouble, instead had been quite pleasant and even reminded her to be safe and have fun.
She felt like the city might be quite nice, after all?
He Ao smiled, looking out over the endless cityscape,
The challenges never lie in entering the city.
