Chapter 242: Chapter 242: Miniature Fusion Reactor (Please Favorite, Subscribe, and Vote for Monthly Tickets)
The story of Chaos is simple.
He was originally a little beggar, robbed of all the money he had begged for by a vagabond and beaten to within an inch of his life before being thrown into a rubbish heap to die.
Kyle took him back and saved his life.
From then on, he lived with Kyle.
But Kyle was not a good man; all he needed was a flexible and useful tool.
They hid in an amusement park situated in a remote corner of Kaye City.
There, Kyle began to train Chaos; the training content was not complex, just some basic physical skills, but the methodology was exceptionally brutal,
Little Chaos failed to perform even a little, and he would be beaten severely, then Kyle would pay for his treatment.
Kyle took great pleasure in this abuse, and his methods of punishing Chaos became increasingly extreme.
Once, he slit Chaos’s cheek open, forced him to dress up as a split-mouth clown to scare people in the haunted house, which resulted in severe blood loss, and almost caused Chaos to die in there.
However, this still left indelible scars on Chaos’s cheeks.
Yet those gashes gave Kyle inspiration, and he disguised himself and Chaos as wandering circus performers, getting close to some of the Nolanka Group’s executives, using Chaos’s pitiful appearance to eventually secure a performance at the Nolanka charity dinner.
Then, at the dinner, he killed Vian’s parents and left Chaos behind to attract the security’s attention, taking advantage of the chaos to escape.
Kyle initially thought Chaos would definitely be caught, but to his surprise, Chaos came back after just two days. Since then, Chaos became a bit strange, starting to paint strange ritual arrays.
Kyle judged that Chaos might have experienced some kind of ’Divine Inspiration’ from an Evil God at that charity dinner.
Those favored by the Evil God often bring madness and chaos; Kyle found an opportunity to blend out of Kaye City, then abandoned Chaos in the wilderness.
That was all Kyle knew about Chaos.
After listening, He Ao fell into a brief silence,
Strictly speaking, Kyle indeed was scum, and if Chaos were a normal person, he would definitely not consider saving Kyle.
But obviously, from the previous video, it was clear that Chaos was not normal; his mental state was slightly unstable.
At least not as stable as He Ao’s.
Therefore, Chaos’s thought process could not be constructed with the thinking of an ordinary person.
"I’ve told you everything I know,"
While He Ao was in deep thought, Kyle, caged in iron, suddenly emphasized.
"I am a man who keeps his promises," He Ao smiled, "as long as you serve your sentence peacefully, I can assure you that you won’t ’commit suicide’ in prison."
Having said that, he cut the communication, slowly got up, and walked towards the exit of the surveillance room, with the old butler closely following him.
——
The silent night enveloped the earth, and the city within the night’s curtain was still bustling with another group of people busy with their tasks as He Ao and the old butler returned to the villa.
An aged minivan traveled along a street illuminated by streetlights,
The driver was an ordinary-looking middle-aged man, he lit a cigarette, took a puff, and then extended the cigarette outside the window.
The sparks on the cigarette shone with mottled colors in the cold night wind.
The sound system inside the vehicle played upbeat music, dispelling some of the night’s chill.
With the proliferation of autonomous driving technology, the number of people working as drivers has been decreasing.
For common freight, customers generally choose the cheaper option of unmanned trucks; it is only for some valuable items or items requiring special handling that a driver is needed.
Of course, hiring a driver isn’t cheap.
The driver held the steering wheel with one hand and shifted his gaze to the smart rearview mirror outside the window.
The rearview mirror reflected the massive emblem of Stars City on the cargo truck’s compartment, the chilly road under the night sky, and a van that was following closely behind the truck.
Sitting in the van were the owners of this shipment; they claimed that the cargo was a special metal requiring a dedicated escort.
The automatic driving system was assisting with the navigation while the driver glanced at his wristband.
On the internal chat group of Nolanka Freight Company, there was an announcement displaying instructions from the highest level of the Group, directing all company drivers to identify special items. If they had taken or were currently transporting any suspicious orders in the last six months, they were to report immediately.
It was said that Mr. Vian had issued this directive.
The driver put a cigarette in his mouth, switched out of the internal chat group, and saw unread messages on the chat app, from his wife.
He opened the chat box,
[It’s settled, the teacher said that come the autumn enrolment, we can get a discount for admission.]
[Be careful driving at night.]
With the cigarette in his mouth, the driver responded with a voice message,
[Okay, you get some rest early, too.]
His child had good grades and was eligible for the private middle schools in the Alanka District.
But he and his wife couldn’t afford the expensive tuition fees of private schools; they could only send their child to the cheaper community middle school in their district.
The child was more promising than he was; the child could go to a private middle school and even had the chance to get into a private university, to become part of the corporate management who could make a high income just by sitting in an air-conditioned office.
If, however, they went to a community middle school, he could almost see his child’s fate—dropping out of school early to work, becoming a worker at some factory or construction site, or becoming a driver like himself, exposed to the elements daily.
He didn’t want his child to follow in his footsteps, but he didn’t have the money to send his kid to a private middle school.
Just like his father didn’t have the money to send him to school back in the day.
He had been prepared to accept this fate, but to his surprise, Mr. Vian had announced this new benefit.
His child had received a discount of as much as 35%, and with a bit of a struggle, he and his wife could afford the rest.
Life was getting better.
The driver took a deep breath, then threw the completely burnt out cigarette butt out the window; thick smoke slowly billowed out of his mouth.
Up ahead, the bright warning lights were flashing.
The traffic officer who was checking the road signaled him to pull over for inspection.
He seemed unsurprised by the situation and slowly pressed down on the brakes.
The van behind him, sensing that something was wrong, immediately turned around and communicated with the driver to do the same.
But by then it was too late; just as they had started to turn around, squad cars came from all directions, surrounding them at the center.
——
Early morning
He Ao rubbed his temples and grabbed a few pieces of bread in the study.
Outside the window, there was no dazzling morning light, only the heavy, overcast skies, oppressive as if still under the veil of night.
He Ao bit into the bread as he entered the laboratory. Most of the previous day and half the night, whenever he had time, he had been coming in to retrofit the Adam Mark-1 armor, fixing its vulnerabilities.
Now, on top of the Adam Mark-1 base, the silhouette of the new battle armor was gradually taking shape.
While He Ao operated the robotic arms to retrofit the Mecha, a prompt tone rang out.
He paused in his work, and almost instantly, he stood at the doorway of the nuclear testing lab.
A silver cylindrical object, faintly glowing, was being clutched by a mechanical arm and taken out from the laboratory.
The miniature fusion reactor, was completed.
