He Ao did not enter the tower directly but stood outside the iron gate of the tower, closely examining the crack in this solid, heavy gate.
The crack was in the seam of the gate, about three meters tall, with its widest point near two meters from the ground, and around thirty centimeters wide. The fissure caved inwards, as if it had been violently smashed open by some creature.
In comparison to the massive metal gate that was nearly forty meters wide and sixty to seventy meters tall, this crack was not particularly big.
But the crack was large enough for smaller creatures and people to pass through.
A tall man, by merely turning sideways, could easily slip through this crack.
He Ao squatted down and carefully observed the shape of the fissure.
"What’s wrong?"
Liu Nan’s voice suddenly came from behind.
"The crack seems to have been smashed open," He Ao did not turn around, his finger gliding over the indented part of the gate, "But there are many small indents at the point of impact, it doesn’t seem like the work of a powerful creature in a single blow but rather like it was repeatedly struck by a less forceful creature until it wore through."
"Aren’t we going in?"
Liu Nan bent over, her head floating above He Ao’s shoulder, and her dark hair draped over his shoulder.
"Not yet," He Ao stood up, "There could be danger inside, let’s investigate a little first, enter after breakfast."
"Okay,"
Liu Nan also stood up straight and said with a smile, "I’ll follow your lead."
Three fiery red suns peeped over the horizon, and He Ao turned around to look at the girl behind him.
The girl’s smile was radiant, and even her disheveled, dirty appearance did not diminish her beauty.
He Ao averted his gaze and walked behind the girl.
There was a stream flowing by the edge of the tower, its clear and transparent water reflecting He Ao’s dirty cheeks.
He Ao looked around, checking for any suspicious areas.
But the surroundings were as silent and desolate as usual, no different from any other place.
Just as He Ao was about to retract his gaze, something white at the bottom of the stream caught the corner of his eye.
He plunged his hand into the stream, touching the white object, which seemed to be a part of some bone buried beneath the sand at the bottom of the water.
He Ao brushed the sand away from the white object, revealing a long, curved, sharp, horn-like object.
Then he gripped the horn and pulled hard upward.
The clear stream water was churned, becoming murky, as He Ao lifted a gigantic skull, resembling that of a bull’s and as wide as his chest and half the size of his body.
The skull was white as jade, with both curved horns approximately half a meter long, looking remarkably imposing.
This was no ordinary animal’s skull but likely the skull of some transcendent beast akin to a bull.
After pondering for a moment, He Ao broke off the two horns from the skull, holding them in his hands.
Then he thrust the horns into the middle of the stream and forcefully dug out a small pit.
More white bones were revealed,
He Ao changed the course of the stream beside him, diverting the water, and continued digging down.
Soon, the complete, headless skeleton of a four-legged animal, over three meters long, was uncovered.
"What is this?"
Liu Nan approached the stream, asking with some confusion.
"It seems to be some exotic beast that died here."
He Ao kept digging, revealing the complete skeleton of the exotic beast.
He then began to imagine the shape of the exotic beast based on the skeleton.
It might have been a sturdy creature, similar to a wild buffalo, nearly two meters tall and over three meters long.
He Ao picked up the bull’s skull again, comparing it.
The horns of the exotic beast were set further back; unless bent low, it could easily use its head to ram an enemy.
He Ao carefully observed the skull of the ox, noting the thick and sturdy frontal bone, suggesting the exotic beast’s mode of attack must have been headbutting.
However, the skull of the deceased creature was covered in fine cracks, and He Ao felt that with a little effort, he could shatter the beast’s frontal bone.
How did they manage to cause such damage to the hardest part of the exotic beast?
He Ao looked up at the iron gate that had been cracked by an impact, where the height of the ox’s head coincided with the gate’s most severely deformed spot.
He then shook his head, "This one isn’t enough."
He lifted the pair of horns and began to excavate around the skeletal remains of the ox.
Half an hour later, He Ao gazed at the expanse of white bones at his feet and fell into deep thought.
He could keep digging, but there was no need.
Beneath the wasteland in front of the great gates, the remains of these exotic beasts may lie buried.
They had rushed forward one after another, forcefully creating a crack in the indestructible gate with their lives.
"This?"
Liu Nan looked on in surprise, seemingly unable to comprehend why there were so many white bones here.
"This is probably the origin of that crack."
He Ao shook his head.
"But, how could these exotic beasts..."
Liu Nan took steps closer to He Ao, speaking in astonishment.
"If it wasn’t for something inside the tower attracting them, then it must be some ability that twisted their will. That’s right,"
He Ao sighed, turned around to face Liu Nan, who had her hands behind her back, and raised his left hand. A milky-white tag revealed itself on his wrist, "Did you bring your Life Medallion? Just in case someone ends up looking like us later, we’ll use this to recognize each other."
"Uh huh, I have it."
Liu Nan raised her right hand, revealing a milky-white tag dangling from her wrist.
He Ao looked at the number on it
’Research-3001’
He averted his gaze and walked toward the great gates of the tower.
Liu Nan thought he was about to enter, but instead, he started setting up a barbecue grill.
······
"Don’t rush, eat your fill so you’ll have the energy to explore."
He Ao smiled and began to grill meat, "There’s nothing that a barbecue can’t solve."
——
After a satisfying meal, He Ao felt a new thread of Qi solidify in his Dantian and, stretching leisurely, walked toward the crack.
"Let’s go."
He didn’t enter the crack directly, though; he first caught a rabbit from the wasteland beside them and threw it in.
The rabbit, in panic, hopped for a bit behind the crack, then jumped to the right into the depths of the crack, encountering no danger.
Once the rabbit’s figure had completely vanished, He Ao sidled into the tower, followed closely by Liu Nan.
The moment they entered the tower, He Ao paused.
Countless cold and dark gun muzzles were aimed directly at the spot where he stood.
And holding those muzzles were rust-stained robots.
These robots clung tightly to the walls behind the gate, and seen from the gaps, they were all positioned in blind spots, completely out of sight.
He Ao lowered his head to look at the ground, where the surface was marked with pits and scorches from laser melting.
These marks were recent; the robots had been functioning normally at least a few years ago.
He Ao carefully approached a robot.
