Dawn Daily, as one of the oldest and most famous newspapers in the Federation, has dozens of websites and a dozen subsidiary newspapers.
In Dawn City and throughout the entire Federation, it boasts an extremely high level of influence.
The Dawn Daily building is not very tall, designed entirely with glass curtain walls; even though it was built some seventy to eighty years ago, its design still appears quite avant-garde to this day.
In fact, this is the thirteenth time the building has been rebuilt for this centuries-old newspaper, and every inch of brick and tile exudes the breath of the times.
Dawn Daily was once known around the world for its fearlessness of power and the courage to expose scandals of several Federation presidents.
Bang bang—
Jessie walked up to the door of the editor-in-chief’s office and knocked gently on the door.
She held a storage chip in her hand, her face full of indescribable indignation.
"Come in."
A gentle voice came from the office.
Jessie pushed open the door of the office and walked in.
The office was simply decorated; aside from the walls full of books, there was only a refined desk at which a gentlemanly middle-aged man was sitting.
This was Essenwell, the editor of the daily news section of Dawn Daily.
"Jessie, what’s the matter?"
Essenwell looked at Jessie with curiosity; he was familiar with this young girl who had recently interned in their section.
Due to its long-standing heritage and good reputation, Dawn Daily accepts a large number of students for ’internships’ every year.
Calling it an internship, in reality, was just for a touch of glory; Essenwell wouldn’t actually assign them any hard or tedious tasks.
After all, those who interned here had rather exceptional backgrounds, like Jessie for example, who was the daughter of the Crown District Police Inspector.
But Essenwell was quite fond of Jessie, because he saw in her the same qualities he possessed when he was young—justice, passion, and diligence.
"Mr. Essenwell, I’ve got big news, we can’t not report this," Jessie said.
However, Jessie’s usual composure was absent this time; filled with indignation, she walked up to Essenwell’s desk and slapped the chip down.
The girl glared at the editor-in-chief with gritted teeth, "They’re absolutely disregarding human life!"
"Don’t panic, don’t panic," Essenwell picked up the memory chip from the table while pressing the automatic door-closing button beside him, sealing the office door and isolating it from the outside, "Being in a hurry won’t solve any problems."
He inserted the storage chip into the computer’s card reader, "Let’s see what this is all about."
The computer started displaying some data.
Essenwell began to read the data quietly, and as he read, his expression gradually became serious.
In the end, he pulled out the storage chip.
He had originally thought it was just a child’s idea of ’big’ news, but now, it seemed that the news was a bit too ’big’.
He looked at Jessie and said softly, "I can’t make this decision on my own; I have to discuss it with the chief editor."
"What’s there to discuss," Jessie argued, her keen senses detected that something was amiss, her chest heaving with emotion, "All the evidence is here, we should expose those bastards and make them pay for their actions."
"Jessie, we can’t be reckless," Essenwell fell silent for a moment, then calmly said, "Avis Group holds two seats on the board of Dawn Daily."
Jessie was taken aback, staring blankly at Essenwell before lowering her head after a while and asking quietly, "So, the report won’t come out?"
Looking at the girl, Essenwell saw himself as he once was, his enthusiasm extinguished.
He didn’t answer.
But it seemed Jessie had understood, as she reached out, took the chip from the desk, and silently left the room.
After a while, she pushed open the office door again and slapped a resignation letter in front of Essenwell.
Throughout the process, she didn’t say a word, her face flushed with red, and she didn’t even raise her eyes to look at Essenwell again.
"Wait,"
Just as she was about to leave, Essenwell suddenly called out to her, then handed her a business card, "Maybe, you can contact them."
Jessie looked down at the business card in her hand,
[Chief Editor of Ino Media]
[Professor Joseph Saul]
—
Ino Media Tower
Christos pushed open the door of the office hidden in the corner, greeted by the sight of mechanical parts scattered all over the floor and screens virtually covering the entire wall, flashing rapidly with different codes.
"Is there something you need?"
A silver head poked out from among the stack of mainframes, looking at Christos with curiosity.
Several mechanical arms behind her were plugged into different mainframes, swiftly transferring instructions.
"This is the Transcendent material you asked me to find for you."
Christos held a metal box in his other hand, extending it into the room, and placed the metal box at the entrance.
"Thank you."
The silver-haired girl nodded lightly, then turned her head back to watch the flickering screens.
"How much longer do you need?"
Christos looked at the changing codes on the screens.
"It’s already done," she replied.
The silver-haired girl looked at Christos with confusion.
"What are these?"
Christos gazed at the flashing code on the screens, slightly bewildered.
"Oh," the silver-haired girl casually struck a key on the keyboard in front of her, and all the code on the screens disappeared, replaced by a desktop full of various icons,
"It’s a screensaver."
——
"Shh, don’t open your eyes."
He Ao gently covered the little girl’s eyes with his hand and found a coat to drape over her, covering her torn dress.
"Mhm."
The little girl nodded tremulously.
"It’s okay, we’ll get out soon, everything is going to be fine."
The bright red blood flowed under the young man’s feet.
Not far in front of him, a fat man in only an upper garment was lying on the ground, staring wide-eyed at He Ao, clutching a black pistol in his hand, never to fire it again.
A silver short sword had been thrust into his back, pinning him to the ground.
"Step back a bit, and don’t open your eyes."
He Ao said gently once again.
The little girl nodded lightly, obediently stepping back and keeping her eyes tightly shut.
He Ao let go of her, stepped over the fresh bloodstains, walked up to the man’s corpse, and pulled out the silver short sword embedded in his body.
Then he took out a folded ’red paper’ from his pocket, unfolded the paper to reveal a few blank spaces left on it.
He squatted down and used a playing card to smear a bit of the blood on the name of a person on the paper.
This man was the head of the investigation team that originally looked into the case of Joey’s parents; he was a city council member who was esteemed and thus chosen as the head of the investigation team.
Of course, this ’appointment’ was also arranged by the Avis Group.
And as the council member had been receiving ’political donations’ from the Avis Group for a long time, it was only natural for him to return the favor.
After crossing out the name, He Ao glanced at the playing card in his hand.
Club King.
He gently placed the card on the hand of the council member who was holding the gun, then walked back through the blood to the little girl’s side.
The girl looked to be about thirteen or fourteen, her face full of terror and unease.
It was only when she sensed He Ao approaching that she relaxed a little.
"It’s over, everything is over."
He Ao gently took the girl’s hand, leading her through the luxury villa,
walking out of this sin-built splendor.
"Where do you live?"
He Ao asked softly.
"In Kwei District..." the girl slowly reached out and held He Ao’s hand tightly, "My mom and dad had a fight, I sneaked out... those people said they would take me to find a job..."
"It’s okay, you can open your eyes now."
He Ao smiled, gently touched her head, "Your parents must be anxiously looking for you right now, go home quickly."
The girl opened her eyes, the sun filtering through the tree leaves, breaking into scattered shadows.
Everything was so quiet and beautiful.
He Ao called a taxi, sending the girl back home.
After watching the taxi drive away, he turned back to the villa, took a submachine gun from his combat suit, attached a silencer, and emptied the entire magazine into the man’s body lying on the ground.
Then he calmly took out a grenade, placed it on the edge of the table, and tied the pin to the mechanical alarm clock by the bed, setting the time.
It was a simple detonator device—when the alarm clock went off, the grenade would fall to the ground and trigger the fuse.
This grenade wasn’t the laser grenade he used to prefer; it was a high-explosive grenade filled with high explosives.
After doing all this, He Ao left the room.
When he had taken the little girl out of the villa, he had simply used mental disturbance to knock out the bodyguards inside, then passed by them.
But alone, he didn’t need such trouble.
All he had to do was activate stealth mode and casually walk past the guards as if nothing was amiss.
Once he left the villa, he hailed a taxi.
"We will be heading to Avis Machinery Factory, please fasten your seat belt and take care of your personal belongings."
After the car’s automatic driving system issued the reminder, it started slowly.
And He Ao took out the blood-stained paper, looking at each name that had been crossed out one by one.
boom——
A violent explosion came from behind him, as if the whole earth trembled.
The yellow taxi drove away against the background of firelight and sunlight.
He Ao’s gaze fell upon the final blank name on the list.
Pena.
