He Ao, although still somewhat unclear about what had happened, noticed that Slanca’s hand gesture was different.

When a person reaches to grab something woven, like clothing, they usually spread their five fingers apart in a ’grabbing’ gesture.

But Slanca’s hand had four fingers together, with the thumb slightly separated from the other four, forming a ’gripping’ gesture.

One naturally would not grip clothes, but rather something with a handle, such as... a gun handle.

In that instant, He Ao violently leaped behind the sofa beside him.

The fierce sound of gunshots almost rang out at the moment he leapt, and the bullets passed through the gorgeous sofa, causing pure white feathers to burst open.

Clang, clang, clang—

The bullets hit the metal briefcase that He Ao held in front of him, emitting a crisp sound.

"Kid, who sent you here?"

Slanca pressed the button to quickly eject the magazine from his submachine gun, and as the empty magazine fell from the gun, he took out a new magazine from a drawer nearby, ready to slot it in immediately.

The moment he opened the door, he realized something was off with He Ao. The ’takeout’ he ordered would never have that kind of temperament, and the words that followed were his trick to stall He Ao at the critical moment.

In that moment of changing magazines, Slanca felt his mind being violently struck by some formidable power. His entire brain went blank for a moment, and his body stiffened simultaneously.

That moment of blankness was very brief, and his consciousness returned almost in the blink of an eye, but by then it was already too late. The young man across from him had already drawn a submachine gun and aimed it at him.

Rat-tat-tat—

Fierce gunfire sounded once again, and this time, he was the target.

Compared to his marksmanship, the young man’s aim was obviously much more stable and accurate.

By the time he recovered and leaped behind the cabinet, nearly thirty bullets had rained upon his body.

Blood imbued with a grey glow seeped through his pajamas, turning them a bright red. Both of his hands were pierced by more than ten bullets, rendering them completely useless; the submachine gun and the magazine he held tightly also fell to the floor as his grip loosened.

He Ao took out a new magazine to replace the empty one, then deactivated Super Memory and walked step by step towards Slanca.

The momentary stiffness that Slanca experienced was the result of He Ao using his Mental Disturbance ability, which he acquired after Super Memory devoured Dancing Girl’s Talent Sequences and advanced to D-level.

After ascending to D-level, within Super Memory’s ’field of vision,’ He Ao could see a kind of ethereal ’shadow’ that was intertwined with people’s physical bodies. He believes these ’shadows’ are the spiritual entities or souls of humans.

He could disturb these ’shadows’ by touching them with his mind, affecting their state, but he couldn’t control or beguile people. The most he could do now was disrupt his enemies’ thoughts, sending them into a state of rigidity that prevented them from resisting.

In fact, this was the first time he had used this ability in actual combat.

Using this ability also accelerated the consumption of He Ao’s own strength.

Slanca’s soul power exceeded He Ao’s expectations. What should have been thirty seconds of cost-free use of Super Memory was reduced to just five seconds as a result of disturbing Slanca’s mind.

Given the strength of the soul, Slanca was evidently a strong Transcendent, stronger than the average E-level, and very likely a D-level Transcendent.

However, Slanca’s soul, though strong, was in a fluctuating state, flickering on and off, somewhat akin to the injured state Christos had been in before. Thus, He Ao deduced that Slanca must have suffered a serious injury and was still in the midst of recovery.

This was likely the reason he was purchasing Corpse Flowers in large quantities to heal his soul.

He Ao, with a gun in one hand, reached with his other hand behind him into his jacket, gripping the short sword he had secured diagonally downwards across his back, as he approached Slanca.

From Slanca’s performance just now, it seems that thirty bullets from an ordinary firearm weren’t enough to take his life, but his hands must be ruined by now.

"A D-level with a mental Talent Sequence really thinks highly of me," Slanca leaned against the cabinet, listening to He Ao’s footsteps getting closer, "Who do you work for?"

As he spoke, he endured the pain and forcefully dug out the bullets lodged in his wrists one by one. These bullets were hindering the movement of his hand muscles; fine beads of cold sweat surfaced on his forehead, and he couldn’t help but let out small sounds of pain from his throat.

The teenager outside didn’t respond to him but continued to close in step by step.

Slanca hastened the action on his hands. Once the bullets had been plucked out one by one, he tore his nightshirt fiercely, using strips of fabric to bind his wrists to stop the bleeding. At the same time, strands of orange-red, scorching flames began to gather in the palm of his hand.

Ever since his last injury, every time he used his abilities, he would feel an intense sensation of mental tearing, and that dreadful pressure lingered around him like an incurable disease.

This was also why he wanted to deal with He Ao using firearms in the first place; the cost of using Transcendent powers was too great.

But he had underestimated He Ao’s strength, which led to him being completely suppressed during their first encounter and even sustaining serious injuries.

Even now, he couldn’t figure out who would send an unknown D-level powerhouse to attack him, especially one who appeared so young.

Although he had done many bad things, they were all minor tasks, dealing with ordinary people at the bottom level. Except for the last time he was injured while gathering information due to underestimating his opponent, he had never offended any E-level or higher powerful individuals.

It couldn’t possibly be that one of those low-level trash had received some sort of Grace and came for revenge, could it?

What a joke.

He shook his head, calming his mind, and continued to activate his ability.

Just as the flames in his hands were gathering into a fireball, the footsteps that had been getting closer suddenly stopped, followed by the muffled sound of the firearm being thrown onto the sofa.

The whole room fell eerily silent in an instant.

In this strange silence, Slanca frowned; he waited for a moment, holding the gradually ’plumping’ fireball, and slowly poked his head out from behind the cabinet.

At that moment, a cold gun muzzle rested against the back of his head,

"Mr. Slanca, don’t move. Perhaps we can talk."

Slanca’s body trembled, freezing entirely, but the flames in his hands did not disappear.

"Mr. Slanca, this is a ’Transcendent pistol.’ The moment I pull the trigger, the bullet will pulverize your brain and take your life."

As He Ao finished speaking, the flames in Slanca’s hands slowly dissipated.

Changing the magazine, closing the distance step by step, using mental attacks—all were parts of the trap He Ao had prepared to give Slanca the false impression that he was a mere mental ability user with low physical capacity, who would choose to continue with firearm attacks.

In reality, halfway through, he first discarded the submachine gun to draw Slanca’s attention, then detonated his Super Memory to circumvent the cabinet in an extremely short time and appear behind Slanca.

Deception is a tactic of war.

It would be easy for He Ao to kill Slanca, who was already injured, but his goal wasn’t murder; it was to extract information from Slanca.

"May I know who sent you?"

By now, Slanca also understood the question. The fact that He Ao hadn’t killed him immediately meant that he was still of value.

"Mr. Slanca, it’s our first meeting, but I think you should be well aware of my information," He Ao said softly, "My name is Joey."

For a moment, Slanca was stunned.
