Chapter 1187: Chapter 1187: ’Testing’ Over (Seeking Monthly Pass)
"""
A vast quantity of abandoned machinery covered the ground outside the city gate.
The once snow-covered plains had now melted into faint, thread-like patterns.
Sunlight traced across the top of the sky, gradually sinking westward.
The heavy machinery finally reached the city gate.
Where once the machinery had been densely packed, now only scattered remnants remained.
The few remaining anti-aircraft armored vehicles ceded space, moving to either side to clear the way for the heavy armored vehicles behind them.
Clusters of artillery fire continued to rain down between these anti-aircraft armored vehicles and heavy machinery.
More concentrated barrages simultaneously filled the skies, launched from anti-aircraft vehicles positioned farther back.
Mechas flying through the air swarmed toward the city walls like storm clouds.
Dodging artillery fire from the walls, they closed in rapidly, using their more agile forms compared to fighter jets to target the gun turrets on the walls.
Beneath the mechas, fully armed armored forces shielded the heavy armored vehicles, hammer-like in form and mounted on triangular treads, as they rushed boldly toward the city gate.
Then, amidst the relentless barrage, the front-line heavy robots finally reached the city gate.
They raised their hammer-like hands and pressed them firmly against the gate.
Boom—
A violent, high-frequency tremor shook the entire gate, producing a thunderous roar.
Even the towering city walls seemed to vibrate faintly.
······
The intense vibrations spread into the narrow command room atop the high walls.
"They’re attempting to destroy the transmission mechanism of our city gate using high-frequency resonance!"
A young officer shouted urgently at a screen, "Vital components have already begun showing signs of damage."
"Electrify the city gate."
The temporary commander of North City standing beside Viko, his gaze locked on the contents of the screen, raised his hand and declared loudly.
"Activating the electrification switch now."
Someone among the crowd responded immediately.
Soon, Viko watched as the gate on the screen erupted with bright electrical arcs that engulfed the heavy robots pressing their hands against it almost instantly.
The air seemed to crackle with the sound of electricity.
The robots trembled one by one, then tipped backward, collapsing in front of the gate.
They formed a small mechanical hill.
"The gate can be electrified?"
Viko, catching on belatedly, turned to look at the commander beside him.
"Basic city defense infrastructure,"
The commander replied with a faint smile.
"All the machinery outside is made of metal,"
Viko gazed thoughtfully at the heavy mechanical vehicles on the screen, "As soon as the electric current flows, they can’t even touch the gate?"
"No, look at those giant hammers mounted on treaded vehicles at the rear,"
The commander pointed to the screen, where hammer vehicles were advancing from the back, "Those hammers are likely insulated with high-grade materials. The electric current from the gate alone won’t penetrate them."
Viko’s gaze carried a hint of perplexity.
"Are you wondering why the first wave of robots assaulting the gate weren’t equipped with insulation?"
The commander explained slowly, "Because the mainstream insulating materials used by the Federation aren’t resistant to wear. Under high-frequency vibrations, they quickly degrade and impede the effectiveness of the resonance. Robots of this kind are typically left uninsulated."
"Doesn’t the mercenary captain outside know the gate is electrified?"
Viko asked, puzzled.
"He knows,"
The commander beside him paused, then continued,
"It’s common knowledge, covered in the Federation’s military manuals. However, some city defense commanders embezzle funds meant for maintaining or updating high-voltage equipment, leaving behind only testing devices that can demonstrate their functionality in a pinch.
"These testing devices provide mere cover and cannot sustain the consumption of an active conflict. Meanwhile, high-frequency resonance attacks noticeably damage the city gate’s intricate parts and mechanical structure."
"So, what you’re saying is,"
Viko began to understand, raising his head to look at the screen ahead, "He’s gambling? Gambling that our gate mechanism is also poorly maintained? If the gambit succeeds, he’ll inflict significant damage on the gate. But do those frontline soldiers know he’s gambling?"
The temporary South City commander fell silent for a moment before softly replying, "This is war."
Hearing this, Viko paused slightly and sank into silence.
"A massive mechanical construct spotted!"
At that moment, a voice of alarm arose from the crowd.
Viko and the commander looked up, and in the dense army at the screen’s edge, a colossal silhouette began to take shape.
Soon, it occupied nearly a third of the screen’s view—and this was only a small segment of its side.
"Switch to the main screen camera and focus the lens on that thing."
The commander shouted immediately.
"Switching now,"
Someone in the crowd replied.
The main screen before Viko flickered, and a massive, hovering aerial construct came into full view.
Compared to it, the airborne mechas nearby seemed almost like "little toys."
It was a gigantic brown machine with a width of no less than a hundred meters.
Its overall shape resembled that of a massive, slightly ajar clam shell, its open side facing the city gate and, consequently, the camera lens.
Three scarlet cannon mouths, as lustrous as pearls, were nestled alongside one another in the open center of the "shell."
On either side of this immense "shell" were tracks of jet-black currents, twisting and looping as they flew.
These currents formed interlocking circles that wrapped vertically around the "shell" at a sixty-degree angle, creating a framework akin to a basketball’s grooves.
From afar, the flying construct resembled a half-squinting, tri-pupiled monstrous eye, surrounded by swirling rings of drones, forming its ethereal "eyeball."
As Viko stared at the screen, he scrutinized further and realized that these "currents" were swarms of compact combat drones.
The gargantuan construct, with its entourage of guarding drones, emerged from the snow-covered peaks like a horrifying beast descending to earth, gradually "drifting" toward the city gate.
"Is that the legendary ’Sky Behemoth’?"
Viko muttered hoarsely, his lips parted slightly.
If not for its overtly mechanical features, its appearance could have easily been mistaken for an eerie and grotesque exotic beast.
Viko had little knowledge of the Federation’s large-scale war machines; these behemoths, aside from enthusiasts and the military, were rarely studied by others.
His awareness of Sky Behemoths came from photos of a downed one in previous Yilan City news reports.
"No,"
The commander beside him shook his head slightly, his voice rasping as he spoke, "This is a B-level combat unit: Demon Wolf."
"Demon Wolf?"
Viko was momentarily stunned.
"It’s a product developed by Jiefeier Industry to rival the Sky Behemoth. Rumor has it its firepower isn’t as potent, but its energy recharge time is shorter, and its mobility vastly exceeds that of the Sky Behemoth."
The officer stared at the screen, watching the colossal construct advance with a hint of awe, "To be honest, this is my first time seeing one. If it gets the chance to unleash its full firepower, our city gate won’t last long."
Viko raised his head, dazed, staring at the immense creation.
He watched as waves of mechas and dense formations of jets swirled beneath the colossus, engulfing everything as they surged forward.
He understood.
Their "probing" attempts had concluded.
——
Minte City · West Gate
Bright light illuminated the pristine mountains and snow plains.
Roaring machinery shook snow loose from withered branches.
Birds and ravens leapt from the treetops, flapping densely toward the sky.
Camouflaged armored forces descended the towering mountains, sliding swiftly down the slopes like an overwhelming avalanche.
Gathering as one, they surged toward the sealed city gate like a flood.
Only a short stretch separated the overlapping peaks from the gate.
In mere moments, the converging armored vehicles reached the sealed gate.
One by one, mechas emerged from the mountains, darting through gaps among scattered birds as they rushed toward the gate.
Clack—
The forward land fortress opened its top cover, dislodging patches of snow as it vibrated, and a man with glasses slowly climbed out of the fortress.
Standing atop the fortress, his feet planted on its cold, snow-dusted shell, he raised his head to gaze at the city ahead.
Though Minte was a small city, its towering walls still stood high.
From this close distance, the imposing walls split the sky like a heavy line, dividing it in two—one side a boundless cold mist, the other solid stone.
A faintly chilly wind brushed across his cheek, passing over his glasses.
He lowered his head slightly, shifting his gaze from the top of the wall to the gate directly ahead.
Their forces had progressed this far.
But atop the towering walls, there was no movement.
No gunfire, no alarms, not even a single message from within.
Everything was unnervingly quiet, as if it were just another day and nothing had emerged.
The massive land fortress accelerated toward the gate.
From a distance, there seemed to be faint noises, likely the flames of battle from North City.
"Captain, we haven’t received any response from the gate yet."
As sharp sounds echoed, an officer climbed out from within the fortress, stood beside the man in glasses, and spoke softly.
"Don’t worry,"
The man waved his hand lightly, "They told us there’d be no reply. Just wait and see."
With his hands behind his back, he stared intently at the increasingly close gate.
Boom—
A faint sound emanated from behind the gate, quickly growing louder.
The heavy gate cracked, splitting open slightly, then steadily pulled apart to either side.
