Chapter 1186: Chapter 1186: The Drumbeat (Two More Chapters for Monthly Pass)

The current connection between He Ao and the Life Goddess was at such a level that it was indeed possible for the Life Goddess to casually send an ’Oracle.’ However, monitoring his soul and thoughts would require expending additional power to strengthen the link.

He Ao did not sense the Life Goddess attempting to strengthen the connection, nor did he feel any overt signs of contamination from the Divine Being seeping into his body.

According to the agreement between He Ao and the Life Goddess, She would not monitor his thoughts or actions.

The promises of a Divine Being carry a weight rooted in mysticism, and with their repeated collaborations, He Ao believed that the Life Goddess would not easily break their covenant.

The ’perception’ of the ’Saint’ state was likely built upon the faint connection they already shared.

He Ao could sense the existence of the Life Goddess, and the Life Goddess could also perceive whether Her ’Saint’ was ’dead’ or ’alive.’

However, the ’Saint’ returning to the Pure White Space had both advantages and drawbacks.

The advantage was that each time He Ao left, Pete could ’return’ to the Pure White Space. He wouldn’t need to worry about his body being devoured by beasts or encountering other unexpected dangers after He Ao ’logged off.’

The drawback was that each ’Advent’ required time; it couldn’t happen instantaneously. Furthermore, the advent location wasn’t guaranteed to be the same as the previous one.

Bzzz—

At that moment, his wristband shook slightly, and two messages came in.

The first message was from Viko. Its content was simple: [The Church of Chaos is inciting unrest within the city and requires the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s assistance to suppress it.]

He Ao replied briefly: [Understood, I’ll arrange for help immediately.]

The second message was from Xiya, and it was even more succinct, with just a few words: [The people are ready.]

Upon seeing this message, He Ao glanced at the bright sunlight outside the window, stood up slowly, and stretched lazily.

Then, he raised his hand and quickly replied,

[I’m coming over now.]

Weiken stood inside a discreet cabin and lifted his head to gaze at the scene outside the window.

A young man, appearing refined and polite, was strolling slowly through the crowd, his hands casually tucked into the pockets of his jacket as if leisurely wandering.

Suddenly, he abruptly pulled out two pistols and started firing wildly at the surrounding crowd.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

"Ah!" "Murderer!" "There’s a killer!"

Amid the intense gunfire, panicked screams erupted from the crowd, and people began fleeing in all directions.

The young man’s accuracy was poor, and the sparse number of pedestrians meant none of the bullets hit anyone. Yet, the chaos had already spread across the streets.

Ding—

A shrill police siren wailed from a distance, signaling the rapid approach of city law enforcement.

"Hahaha—Run, run—"

The young man laughed hysterically while waving his guns, herding the crowd like sheep.

"Are all members of the Church of Chaos this crazy?"

Weiken withdrew his gaze and turned to the man in the red robe standing beside him. "And why do they all hide so deeply?"

If the red-robed man hadn’t pointed him out, Weiken would never have guessed that the young man belonged to the Church of Chaos.

"This isn’t madness; it’s ’devotion,’"

The red-robed man corrected, then lifted his head to look at Weiken. "Has your ’bodyguard’ not been captured yet?"

"I don’t know where he’s hiding,"

Weiken replied coldly. "By the time my men arrived, he’d already fled. But it doesn’t matter; the city gates are closed, and flights are grounded. Once we succeed, I’ll search every corner of this city to find him."

"My man is dead."

The red-robed man said solemnly.

"I know. I’ll ensure his compensation is paid. If he has a wife and children, I’ll take care of them."

Weiken stated casually. "You’ll receive every penny of the payment we owe you."

"Your eyes show neither regret nor compassion,"

The red-robed man lowered his head, speaking softly. "You were born to be a believer of chaos."

"Stop with the pointless remarks,"

Weiken glanced at him. "Have all your subordinates begun their operations?"

"Of course,"

The red-robed man smiled.

"We’ve been planning this grand chaos all along. This city is riddled with my lord’s followers.

Some have even lived under false identities for years, fully integrating into their roles. Now, for the glory of our lord, they’re willing to abandon their lives, reveal their true selves, and dedicate their devotion."

The red-robed man spread his arms, exclaiming, "How noble and selfless this faith is!"

"Just a bunch of lunatics,"

Weiken spat on the ground. At that moment, he seemed to sense something and raised his hand to check his wristband. Then, he burst into laughter. "That idiot Owai is mobilizing the City Defense Army from West City to suppress the chaos within the city."

"What do you plan to do next?"

The red-robed man lifted his head with curiosity, watching Weiken’s excitement.

"Every debt has its collector,"

Weiken raised his hand and glanced at a nearby security officer. "Bring me my encrypted communication device."

The officer quickly ran over with the device, placing it on the desk behind Weiken.

Weiken took out a cigarette from his pocket, lit it, and bit it between his lips. As he looked at the chaos engulfing the streets below, his expression suddenly shifted slightly, and he touched his chest.

"What’s wrong?"

The red-robed man asked, watching him closely.

"Feels itchy,"

Weiken replied nonchalantly. "Nothing serious."

"From the earlier gunshot wound?"

The red-robed man asked in a low tone.

"Seems like it,"

Weiken shrugged. "My chest felt a little itchy earlier too. It’s just worse now, but it’s no big deal. After today, I’ll have my private doctor take a look."

Taking a drag from his cigarette, he glanced at the communication device in front of him. A sinister grin spread across his lips.

"But I’ll remember this—Suote, Borek, Owai, Viko—you’re all as good as dead."

He turned to pick up the communication device and began encrypting and compiling transmissions at a rapid pace. "This city’s about to fall. Today, a lot of people in this city are going to die."

The red-robed man stood beside him, his gaze shifting to the wooden box tucked into Weiken’s pocket. Looking back at Weiken’s face, veiled in smoke, he smiled faintly.

——

Deep within the mountains and dense forests, a bespectacled man crossed a mountain ridge, surveying the soldiers moving swiftly through the valley below.

He lifted his head slightly, his gaze piercing through the shadowy woods to catch a faint glimpse of the towering walls in the distance.

"Captain,"

A military officer hurried over, handing him a tablet. "We’ve received an encrypted message from the city."

"From the city walls?"

The bespectacled man took the tablet and asked casually.

"Forwarded through the city walls,"

The officer explained quickly. "It used the group’s internal encryption protocol, so it’s likely from someone inside the city."

"Oh?"

The bespectacled man raised his hand, opened the tablet, and began reviewing its content.

A faint smile appeared on his face as he read.

He turned to the officer, handing the tablet back before speaking briskly. "Send word to the West Iron and Steel Mercenary Corps that everything is ready. They can begin the operation."

"Yes, sir!"

The officer saluted and ran off with the tablet.

The bespectacled man gestured to another officer nearby, summoning him, and gave a swift order, "Relay to the entire army—advance at full speed and prepare for the siege!"

"Understood!"

The officer promptly saluted.

Minte City · North City

He Ao slowly opened his eyes and let out a yawn.

After a brief period of rest, he felt significantly reinvigorated.

He stepped out of the vehicle and nodded lightly at Hel, who was behind the wheel.

Hel nodded back before starting the car and driving away. He was heading off to assist his Federal Bureau of Investigation colleagues in dealing with the Church of Chaos uprising in the city.

He Ao turned to see Xiya, with her short, efficient haircut, striding briskly toward him from across the road.

"Mr. Suote,"

She looked at He Ao and quickly said, "Everyone is ready as you instructed."

"Good,"

He Ao nodded slightly. "Take me to see them."

"Understood. They’re this way; follow me."

Xiya nodded.

Boom—

In the distance, beyond the towering walls, the sound of explosions echoed. He Ao looked up briefly at the walls before lowering his gaze and continuing to follow Xiya.

Soon, the two of them arrived at the entrance to a City Defense Army camp.

The original sentries of the camp were nowhere to be seen. Instead, a scrawny young man with faint scars on his face manned the guard post.

Upon seeing He Ao approach, the youth enthusiastically waved at him. "Mr. Suote!"

He Ao paused, momentarily surprised, before recognizing the figure as the small individual he had rescued two days ago in the North City gate’s control hub.

Two days ago, the youth had been covered in blood. Now cleaned up with a new set of clothes, he looked like an entirely different person.

"Shouldn’t you be recovering in the hospital? What are you doing here?"

He Ao asked the youth, puzzled.

The young man froze briefly upon realizing He Ao remembered him. With a mix of excitement and nervousness, he replied, "I wanted to follow you—to fight for you."

"When I was gathering people,"

Xiya explained softly from the side, "he happened to be lurking nearby. Somehow, he heard about the recruitment and approached me. Everyone said that while he’s small, his skills are impressive, so I agreed."

She paused, frowning slightly, "But I didn’t tell him this mission was under your command."

"How did you know meeting Xiya would lead you to me?"

He Ao looked at the scrawny youth inquisitively.

"Heh,"

The youth chuckled. "General Owai never lets outsiders near the walls. For this lady to enter the City Defense Army to recruit, she had to be connected to someone significant. And right now, the only major figure in the city capable of influencing General Owai’s actions is you."

"Pretty clever kid,"

He Ao chuckled, then glanced at the scars on the youth’s face. "How’s your injury?"

"Reporting, sir!"

The youth instantly snapped to attention. "I was behind cover the entire time. I’m not badly hurt."

"Do you realize that this mission is extremely dangerous? Joining us might very well cost you your life."

He Ao’s tone softened slightly as he looked at the youth.

"I’m aware!"

The youth responded firmly without hesitation. "You pulled me out of a pile of corpses, sir. I’m not afraid of death; I want to avenge my fallen comrades."

He stared resolutely at He Ao and added seriously, "With you, we’ll win!"

After a pause, he added, "I was born in the Seventy-Sixth District, and my family is gone. I have no one to look after, sir."

Gazing at the determined face before him, He Ao remained silent for a moment and asked softly, "What’s your name?"

"My name is Orey, sir!"

The youth instantly replied.

"Orey,"

He Ao addressed him. "If you’re truly ready, join the troops when the time comes."

Orey saluted sharply, his voice ringing loud and clear. "Yes, sir!"

With a final glance at the youth, He Ao turned and entered the camp.

Boom—

Beyond the towering walls, the sound of intense explosions grew even more frequent, like a rapid drumbeat pounding in everyone’s ears.
