Chapter 1144: Chapter 1144: Is the City Gate Open? (Super Long Chapter, Monthly Ticket Request)
Minte City · North Gate
Bright lights illuminated the bloodstained corridor, a silent officer lit a cigarette, stepping on the wet pools of blood, moving past the bodies on the ground, step by step toward the depths of the corridor.
A squad of fully armed soldiers followed closely behind him, the thick scent of blood wafted through the air, brushing against everyone’s cheeks.
Faint, sporadic gunfire came from ahead, growing closer and softer.
When the officer turned the last corner, a bloodstained man appeared in his field of view, saluting him,
"Commander, we have secured control of the control center, but a portion of the original defense forces are still resisting, trying to retake the control center. We are currently clamping them down on the other side of the control center."
"Owai has already abandoned them, they can’t expect any backup now,"
The officer, with a cigarette in his mouth, glanced at the man in front of him, "Didn’t you tell them?"
"I did, commander."
The man saluted, quickly saying, "But they still resist stubbornly."
"Owai always manages to find some dim-witted fellows who can’t turn their heads around."
The officer’s steps did not falter, moving swiftly towards the direction marked ’Gate Control Center’.
The entire control panel was already under the grip of fully armed soldiers, and past the control panel, on the other side of the control center, there was a small door leading to a channel.
Some soldiers, also dressed in City Defense Army uniforms, drenched in their own blood, were attempting to charge out of this passage, only to be repressed by the soldiers in control of the center with overwhelming firepower.
Meanwhile, the soldiers ’guarding’ the control center were also relying on Riot Shields and covering fire, inching their way towards sealing off that passage.
Moving through the hectic hail of gunfire, the officer didn’t even bother to look up at the fiercely battling soldiers on the other side.
He walked to the control center that was tightly surrounded by Riot Shields and makeshift sandbags, glanced at the screens that had been damaged by stray bullets, now partially pixelated, and quickly asked, "Is the control center alright?"
"No problem, commander!"
The bloodstained man immediately replied.
The officer lifted his head, looking forward, at the densely packed giant screens spanning the front of the control center, these screens were partially damaged but still depicted the scene outside the city gates.
Densely packed Mechas engulfed in flames, rumbling land tanks and fortresses, as well as Dragon Cavalry Fighters and anti-aircraft warplanes suspended in the sky, covering the sun.
The army outside the city gates, like tigers and leopards licking their claws, had already tensed all their muscles, just waiting for the fence containing the prey to open, ready to rush in and feast.
"Give me the keycard."
The officer didn’t turn back, raising his hand, speaking quickly.
"Commander!"
The man beside him glanced at him, and after a brief hesitation, he still pulled out a pitch-black card, handing it to the officer.
"Once we walk this path, there’s no turning back."
The officer lowered his head, his gaze swept across the blood splattered on the console.
He spoke softly, as if talking to the man beside him, yet as if he was murmuring to himself.
Then, he inserted the black card into the console’s card slot.
"Authenticating authority—"
"Authority confirmed."
"Unlocking the North City Gate gatekeeping system for you—"
The crisp and bright voice of the mechanical female echoed within the not-so-spacious control center.
The originally scattered gunfire intensified in an instant at this moment, as if the people hidden behind the passage had launched an unprecedented charge.
In the midst of this tempestuous surge of gunshots, the officer’s expression was eerily calm.
He watched the red glow symbolizing the gatekeeping system on the console slowly turn green, then at the same time, he flipped open the covers on switches to his left and right.
He raised both hands, gripping the levers marked ’Outer City Gate’ and ’Inner City Gate’ simultaneously, and pulled them down slowly.
"Outer City Gate is opening—"
"Inner City Gate is opening—"
Accompanied by the mechanical female voice reverberating in the control center, the officer let go of his hands and stepped back.
His cigarette was used up, he tossed the butt away, and pulled out a new cigarette to clamp it between his lips. Amid the dense gunfire, he took out an old-fashioned lighter and sparked the flame.
He brought the flame to his cigarette, looking towards the direction where fierce gunfire erupted, he calmly said, "Take care of them."
"Yes!"
The bloodstained man saluted.
The officer, with the cigarette in his mouth, turned around, casting a glance at the screen behind him.
He saw the war machines on the screen spewing flames, saw those armored vehicles swaying eagerly as they tried to approach the city gate.
Like ferocious tigers and leopards, they scratched the ground with their sharp claws, always ready to charge.
He withdrew his gaze, moving beyond the control center, heading towards the direction where the city gate would open.
Now, he was about to complete that final step, to welcome the frenzied monsters into the city.
——
South City·City Defense Army Command Center
An antique record player was playing calm and soothing music, as the man poured vibrant red wine from the bottle into a glass, handing it to the young officer beside him.
"General,"
The officer standing next to him stared dumbfoundedly at the glass being handed to him and, after a brief pause, spoke slowly, "Outside——"
"What’s outside?"
General Owai also poured vibrant red wine into his own glass, gazing outside the window.
Outside the window lay half a dimly lit, quiet city, and half a vast shadow that seemed to cover the sky and half of the world.
A vague, fine noise was currently emanating from that shadow, like a small stick gently tapping on a wooden box, or popcorn boiling and expanding inside a popcorn machine.
Tap—tap tap——
That was the towering city wall, the Federation’s great shield that protected civilization.
"What do you say,"
General Owai lowered his head, looked at the wine in his glass as if recalling something, and said softly, "What exactly does the high wall protect?"
The officer standing beside him paused slightly, falling into silence.
"You know,"
General Owai seemed to anticipate he would not get an answer and picked up the glass, taking a sip of wine, "How many City Defense Officers has Minte City had in the past six to seven hundred years?"
The officer paused again, speaking softly, "A few hundred?"
"Before me, there were 207, they were all my predecessors."
General Owai asked softly, "And the Federation?"
"That’s probably countless,"
The young officer shook his head slightly, "There are so many cities in the Federation."
"Indeed, countless."
Hearing the officer’s words, General Owai didn’t ask any further, simply raising his glass.
Just then, a hurried knocking came from the door.
A guard pushed open the door, looking somewhat nervously at General Owai in the room, "General, we’ve caught someone who forced his way into the command center."
Behind him, several guards were ushering a red-haired man down the corridor.
"Intruding into the military camp, just kill him."
General Owai took another sip of his wine and calmly stated, "Why bring him here?"
"He says he’s a man sent by Mr. Suote to deliver a message from Mr. Suote,"
The guard stood at the door, explained nervously, "You need to decide what to do with him."
General Owai looked up at the guard and after a brief silence, he put down his glass, speaking slowly,"Bring him in."
A few guards squeezed the red-haired man, whose hands were locked by chains, into the room.
"Are you from the Federal Bureau of Investigation?"
General Owai glanced at the red-haired man and picked up his glass, as if trying to recall if he had ever seen such a man.
Then he looked the red-haired man up and down, seemingly losing interest, "Take him away and kill him."
The red-haired man, about to speak, was choked by his words, and before the guards on either side could act, he struggled with his body and shouted loudly, "Does General Owai really want to be a corporate lackey for the rest of his life?"
"Kill him."
General Owai waved his hand dismissively.
The guards on both sides dragged the red-haired man, pulling him out.
The red-haired man struggled more fiercely, shouting loudly, "Does General Owai really want to watch brothers loyal to Minte City, loyal to the City Defense Army, die under the knives of corporate lackeys?!"
His tone rose, his voice growing louder, "Did those soldiers betray their oath to the high wall? Betray their army? Should they just die for nothing in this conspiracy?"
He raised his voice, roaring angrily, "Doesn’t the general of this city have the courage to avenge his soldiers?!"
The moment he shouted these words, the entire room fell silent in an instant.
Immediately following, the sound of firearm loading echoed intensely, as numerous gun barrels were aimed right at the red-haired man’s forehead.
The red-haired man watched silently, swallowing hard.
Now, all it would take was a wave of the hand from the ’General’ sitting opposite for his head to burst open like a red and white watermelon in an instant.
"Did Suote send you here just to say these things?"
But unexpectedly, the person opposite quieted down, holding a glass of wine, asking with a light laugh.
"Mr. Suote is on the way to the North Gate,"
After a moment of silence, the red-haired man spoke slowly, "Along with Minister of Food Viko, Mr. Lockte has been assassinated, and Mr. Viko is the nearest in the Cabinet’s line of succession to the Mayor."
"What does that have to do with me?"
Owai calmly brought the wine glass to his lips.
He had always been neutral, offending no one.
Long before everything had started, he had received ’promises’.
As long as he stayed neutral throughout this battle, he would still be the Commander of Minte City’s City Defense Army.
The conglomerates’ Mercenary Corps can’t stay in this city forever, but he will always be here.
In this battle, he was just an observer.
Minte City will always stand, it’s just that those who rule the city will keep changing.
All of this has nothing to do with him.
The more chaotic the City Government becomes, the more secure his position will be.
Lockte, in order to suppress him, preferred to leave the position of Minister of City Defense vacant rather than give it to him, but still could not affect his control over the City Defense Army.
From a purely profit-oriented perspective, he had no reason to ’take sides’ and take action.
Meanwhile, the red-haired Borek was looking at the City Defense Army General in front of him, somewhat absent-minded for a moment, as he vaguely understood the unspoken meaning behind the man’s words.
"It seems you have nothing more to say,"
Owai let out a light sigh, apparently somewhat disappointed, and brought the wine glass to his lips, "Take him out."
The Guards around immediately rushed up, trying to drag Borek away.
At that moment, Borek finally seemed to snap back to his senses, shouting loudly, "Mr. Suote sent me to deliver a message to you,"
However, at this moment, Owai had already started swirling the fresh red wine in his glass, his gaze shifting to the window, no longer looking at Borek.
"He asked me to ask you,"
Borek’s loud shouts still echoed in the silent room, his voice growing louder, as if trying to release all the air in his lungs in a roar,
"Do you want to hide in the shadows of this small city all your life, be a shrinking coward, or do you want to stand in the sunlight, enduring forever in glory, leaving a name for the ages!"
The sound reverberated in the silent room but received no response.
In the end, the red-haired man was dragged out of the room.
The young officer sitting at the table kept his gaze on the ’General’ in front of him, watching as he put the wine glass down.
Then there was a loud bang.
The wine glass seemed to finally lose the force clamping it, shattering instantly, with the red wine splashing out.
······
On a small terrace at the end of the corridor, the cold wind messed up the kneeling man’s disheveled red hair.
The swirling snowflakes settled on his hair and clothing.
The Guard leader looked at Borek kneeling in front of him, slowly drew a Gauss Pistol, and pressed it against the back of his head, hoarsely said, "Sorry, brother, everyone for their own master."
Borek lowered his head, closed his eyes, and he spoke no more.
"Wait a second."
Just as the Guard’s finger was on the trigger, a soft call came from deep in the corridor.
The Guard leader put away the Gauss Pistol, turned around, and looked back at the young officer who was walking step by step from down the corridor.
The young officer nodded slightly to the Guard leader and walked over to Borek’s side.
······
When the bright lights shone into Borek’s eyes once again, he felt as if blessed with a second lease on life after death.
Following the young officer’s side, he once again saw the Commander of the City Defense Army.
At this moment, in front of the General, there was no red wine or wine glass, only a silver pistol lying on the desk.
Then, he watched the general in front of him raise his head, his gaze icy cold as he looked at him.
Those eyes were like sharp blade tips, piercing his heart, with a terrifying sense of oppression spreading to his soul.
At this moment, Borek was not restrained by any guards around him, but he had never felt death so close.
The terrifying oppression weighed on his chest, making it almost impossible for him to breathe.
He had never seen such a tangible sense of oppression, and perhaps no one else could ever display this level of horror.
The instant the thought flashed through his mind, a name abruptly surfaced in his memory.
Mr. Suote.
Although it seemed that ’Suote’ had never exhibited such power and authority, there was a vague feeling in his mind.
Mr. Suote’s power would not be weaker than that of the commander of the City Defense Army in front of him, perhaps even stronger.
The moment he thought of all this, even the terrifying oppression seemed to have eased a lot.
And the general sitting behind the desk did not seem prepared to give Borek time to think.
He looked up at Borek, his voice calm and indifferent, "Suote is all talk, can he actually do anything? He’s just a deputy chief of staff from Ains, does he have that kind of ability?"
The oppressive feeling in the air seemed to have intensified.
With the image of ’Suote’ echoing in his mind, Borek endured the terror of that oppression, and with gritted teeth, he stared at Owai and said hoarsely, "Whether Mr. Suote has such ability, it’s up to you to judge, you have seen him."
"Hmm?"
In that instant, Owai raised his head and glanced at the redhead before him.
The terrifying oppression weighed down on Borek’s shoulders, almost completely crushing his body, but he still endured, standing tall and fixedly gazing at Owai.
"A fine young man."
Owai stood up, picked up the silver pistol from the desk, and tucked it at his waist.
At that moment, Borek felt the mountainous weight on him suddenly lift, his body shook, and he nearly fell.
But Owai’s gaze had already swept past him, looking towards a young officer on the side, "Convey my order, assemble the troops, get ready to quell the rebellion."
"Yes, sir!"
The young officer immediately gave a military salute, then paused slightly and looked at Owai, "General, what about the North Gate?"
"The guy at the North Gate has been completely bought out by West Steel,"
Owai walked over to the coat rack and took down a simple military hat, "We have done all we can. Since Suote wants us to work for him,"
He lifted his hand, placing the military hat on his head, "then let him show us his strength."

Minte City · North Gate
A speeding motorbike cut through the snowy night, leaving long trails on the ground, coming to a stop on the streets behind the grand towering gate.
The inner city gate, usually tightly closed at night, was now slowly opening to either side.
And across from the inner city gate, through the wide Jar City, the outer city gates were nearly synchronized in opening.
Across the vast wasteland under the night sky, mechas twinkling with flame and radiance like numerous stars poured in through the huge opening of the gates.
They surged through Jar City, charging towards the inner city.
Rows of neatly lined soldiers were now standing at the opened inner city gates, guarding the opened gates.
Welcoming the brilliance flooding in from outside.
Mr. Viko lifted his head, blankly watching the opening gates.
He could vaguely see, behind the opened gate, not only the swarming mechas pouring in but also roaring war machines, emitting thunderous roars.
Like starving beasts, they rushed headlong toward the opened city gate.
"Are we, too late?"
He opened his mouth slightly, speaking in a trembling voice.
"Not late."
A calm voice sounded before him.
Then he saw the blood-red radiance once again drawn from the white sheath, as a speeding motorbike with cold wind brushed across his face.
The roaring engine trembled the earth, and the blood-red blade cut through the wind and snow.
Mechas spewing flames passed through the opened city gates, and the brilliant light converged in the huge cannon barrel.
Like a flash under the night sky, it illuminated the heavens.
