Chapter 452: Checking Clues, Suspect Found!
Chapter 452: Chapter 452: Checking Clues, Suspect Found!
Ever since Luo An met Mona, he realized that she was not a settled person.
Here, being unsettled does not refer to Mona’s lifestyle or emotional state but rather to the part of her life related to computers.
Mona’s computer skills were excellent, but they were not among the very best in the Federation.
Mona had two life goals: one was to save enough money to buy a large villa of her own; the other was to hone her computer skills to the summit, entering the ranks of the very best.
The first goal goes without saying, to achieve the second goal, Mona had been relentlessly improving her computer skills since she joined the FBI.
Her training method was simple; the federal intelligence system includes 18 member agencies, such as CIA, FBI, NSA, DIA (Federal Defense Intelligence Agency), and Mona had hacked into each of them in turn.
Although those departments teamed up to beat her into a retreat, Mona’s computer skills soared rapidly, and she was very happy about that... The head of Special Investigation Team no. 5, Augustus, found this very troublesome, and later on, the person suffering headaches became the Special Investigation Team leader, Luo An.
However, Mona knew her limits. She only clashed with the computer technicians in those departments and never did anything excessive.
Furthermore, as Mona’s computer skills were rapidly improving and the Special Investigation Team needed talents in computers, despite his headaches, Luo An did not directly forbid Mona’s actions.
Hearing what Kotrick, a certain group leader of NSA’s external liaison department, said, Luo An chuckled:
"Correct, Mona Evans is by my side right now. Our Special Investigation Team is investigating a case; at my command, she probed a cybercrime website..."
Luo An briefly described the overview of the case, and upon understanding the meaning behind Luo An’s words, after a few seconds of silence and a cough, Kotrick spoke with a serious face:
"The NSA has also been monitoring this criminal website; we have some understanding of the situation within it.
The ’employer’ you’ve provided, our NSA did some checking, and we couldn’t ascertain their exact identity, but we did find the network IP and signal source they used to log into the site; I can hand these details over to you..."
Hearing Kotrick’s words, Luo An’s lips slightly curved up.
Evidently, the NSA did not acknowledge that they had set up the website for fishing; if Luo An wanted to know who the ’employer’ was, he would need to investigate on his own, and the NSA only had the ’found’ basic information.
Luo An didn’t mind this. He didn’t care about who the NSA was trying to catch; right now, he just wanted to deal with the case he was handling.
After receiving the information provided by Group Leader Kotrick, Luo An exchanged a few pleasantries before hanging up the call, then he quickly went back to his room and gave the information to Mona.
"I knew it..."
Taking the information, Mona muttered a few displeased words with a disgruntled face, then pulled over her laptop, took a deep breath, and began rapidly typing on the keyboard.
With the accurate IP and signal source, Mona quickly found the location:
Oregon, Portland City, a coffee shop at the end of a certain street in the southwest corner.
Reesi looked at this location, momentarily stunned:
"So, the ’employer’ is the owner of this coffee shop?"
"No."
Mona’s hands continued to fly over the keyboard as she shook her head:
"I’ve dug out the information on the owner of this coffee shop; it’s a 63-year-old grandmother.
To say nothing of whether she uses a computer, just from her life’s track record, she and her son are completely unrelated to the Audel family and the several guests living in the villa."
"Then let’s check who was in the coffee shop when the employer sent messages in the criminal network."
Crossing his arms in front of his chest, Luo An spoke gravely:
"Records show that this coffee shop provides free internet. It doesn’t matter how good the coffee is; good business relies on free internet."
Michelle and Winslow nodded incessantly upon hearing this, Chenier looked puzzled, and Reesi appeared speechless.
"What you said makes sense, but unfortunately, this coffee shop removed the original surveillance video due to customer complaints, despite having internet."
Between the clattering of keys, Mona conveyed the bad news with a resigned expression.
Just when Luo An and the others were about to speak, Mona changed the subject with a slight smile and continued:
"However, there is also some good news. Opposite the coffee shop, there is a 24-hour ATM.
This ATM has recorded every single person coming in and out of the coffee shop..."
As she spoke, Mona’s computer began to display the flow of people in that coffee shop. As Mona was about to investigate these individuals one by one, Luo An suddenly furrowed his brows, stretched out his hand towards the computer, and loudly said:
"Stop!"
Mona looked puzzled:
"What’s wrong?"
"Rewind."
Following Luo An’s command, Mona began to rewind the surveillance footage bit by bit. After a few seconds, Luo An pointed to a tall man in the surveillance and said coldly:
"Check this guy out."
"OK."
Mona nodded in agreement, while Chenier, Reesi, and Michelle looked somewhat puzzled. Winslow quickly caught on and said:
"That’s the man described by the white old lady who lives downstairs from Hunter and Belinda’s apartment!"
"Correct."
Luo An nodded. Previously, when he and Winslow had gone to investigate Hunter’s home, a white old lady who lived on the first floor of that building mentioned that Belinda and Hunter had left the building with a man that night.
The old lady hadn’t seen what the man looked like exactly, but he was taller than Winslow yet thinner than Luo An, which matched the man in the surveillance video who walked into the coffee shop with a laptop bag.
"I’ve got it!"
As Michelle logged into the FBI internal database and used facial recognition technology, Mona quickly identified the tall man’s identity:
"Hector Jamie, 34 years old, previously imprisoned for assault.
Before this incident, Hector Jamie had worked as a gardener at the Krista estate for a while!"
"The Krista..."
Luo An’s eyes narrowed slightly. The Krista, 75 years old, was one of the temporary residents in the villa on the night of the massacre and also an old friend of Pranay Audel.
"I’ve also found something!"
Just as Mona finished speaking, Chenier suddenly raised her hand, handed the list to Luo An, and pointed to a red circle on it:
"This is the cross from Krista’s neck, one of the items that ’the employer’ asked Petro and the others to steal.
When I was investigating Krista’s situation just now, I found that there is a legend in the Krista family. It states that the cross on her neck, combined with a red ruby ring from the Krista family, could open a treasure hidden by the ancestors of the Krista family.
It remains uncertain whether this treasure really exists, but that red ruby ring disappeared a few years ago.
The timing of the ring’s disappearance coincides exactly with when Hector Jamie worked as a gardener and was imprisoned for assault!"
The moment Chenier finished speaking, Michelle spoke out loudly:
"I checked Hector Jamie’s recent expenditure records.
The record shows that the day before the villa incident, he just happened to take a flight to Las Vegas and visited several casinos to gamble.
On the night of the incident, the expenditure record shows that Hector Jamie, after losing money, went back to his hotel to rest."
"What a set of beautiful coincidences."
After listening to the three women’s narratives, Luo An chuckled, picked up the coffee on the table, drank it in one gulp, and loudly said:
"Ladies and gentlemen, we are going to work extra tonight. Michelle, book the tickets; we are taking a flight to Portland, Oregon!"
