Chapter 1439: Chapter 1439: It’s More Convenient When Begging
“Inspector, you…”
Gabriel Young asked suspiciously, “What are you planning to do?”
After a brief encounter, she felt an inexplicable trust toward the man before her.
Could it be that he possessed some sort of magic?
Or was it the inherent charm of a successful man?
Pendleton’s secrets, the Young Family’s secrets—Gabriel Young shared them all unconditionally with him.
What she received in return was merely a vague promise.
The treasures hidden within the Azure Emperor’s ancient tomb were abundant.
What if he suddenly decided to kill and seize the treasures?
Gabriel Young felt a hint of regret.
But more than that, she felt anticipation.
The newly appointed chief steward of the Ghost Market had barely settled into his role, yet the inspector in front of her could truly make him leave?
“I…” Julius Reed felt a bit embarrassed… “I just wanted to use my phone to check my reflection.”
“Really?” Gabriel Young blinked her eyes, unable to comprehend this man fully.
With your face veiled, what are you even looking at in the mirror?
Checking if there’s noodle soup on your veil?
“Of course!” Julius Reed suddenly remembered something.
Elaenor Wood was sharp. A hint was all she needed to understand.
This had to work!
“Shopkeeper!” Julius Reed called out, and the shopkeeper promptly ran over with a smile, “Yes, how can I help you?”
“Fifty chopsticks!”
Bang!
A piece of Swimming City Currency landed on the table.
“Oh! You’re serious?”
The shopkeeper was momentarily stunned.
The Swimming City Currency carried significant value—what were fifty chopsticks compared to that?
Could this customer have drunk too much and was messing with him?
He glanced around; there wasn’t any alcohol on the table.
Could the customer be a fool?
Unlikely.
No fool would dress this impeccably.
Even though he couldn’t see the man’s face, this aura—it exuded through the veil!
“Money is no issue.”
Julius Reed adopted the stance of a nouveau riche, tapping the table. “Quickly! Immediately! Now!”
“Got it!” The shopkeeper thumped his foot on the ground, grabbing the Swimming City Currency and heading to the counter. Moments later, he placed over a hundred chopsticks from a bamboo basket in front of Julius Reed. “Forget fifty! You can have as many chopsticks as you want today!”
“Great—you’re dismissed.”
Julius Reed nodded in satisfaction and grabbed one chopstick to start carving words onto it.
“Inspector… what on earth are you trying to pull here?” Gabriel Young was utterly confused.
The plan was to sit back and let the tigers fight, but one tiger showed up alone.
“Obviously… luring the tiger out of its mountain!”
Swish!
As soon as Julius Reed spoke, chopsticks flew out of his hands like arrows!
Thud!
Several Ghost Market guards, caught off guard, fell into pools of blood.
Elaenor Wood swiftly turned around and caught one of the flying chopsticks.
“Twelve chopsticks?”
When her eyes landed on the small character carved onto one chopstick, her initial surprise turned into a sly smile.
There was just one word etched upon it.
Go.
“Chief Steward, someone is attacking us!” A Ghost Market guard, dragging an injured leg, glanced nervously around.
“Should we sound the alarm?” someone shouted.
To be ambushed within the Ghost Market itself, their own territory—it was a disgrace!
“No need, I know exactly where they are,” Elaenor Wood’s gaze swept across the crowd and centered on Julius Reed.
As expected.
“You owe me another favor, huh?” Elaenor Wood shook her head, pointing in the direction they’d come from. “Leave a few here to escort the injured back. The rest, follow me on the chase.”
“But Lord Ghost Seven ordered us to remain at the square to interrogate Solaris Grove,” one person protested.
Crash!
The sound of ice shattering suddenly echoed, and the protesting Ghost Market member disappeared without a trace.
“Remember, you follow my orders now.” Elaenor Wood snapped her white paper fan shut and strode away.
“Oh my goodness!”
Gabriel Young gasped and quickly covered her mouth, muttering in a low voice, “How did you do that?”
Since she’d revealed the Young Family’s secrets to the veiled man before her, her previously alluring and haughty demeanor had been replaced with a simpler, more relaxed tone.
It felt liberating to shed the mask.
“Good looks come with privileges.” Julius Reed stood, his chopsticks launching into action!
“Ah…”
At the center of the square, Solaris Grove’s calf erupted in a mist of blood!
Whoosh!
Another chopstick flew, piercing through his shoulder!
“What’s your plan now?” Gabriel Young was lost.
The man before her grew more mysterious with each passing moment.
“Drawing the snake from its den.”
After accomplishing this, Julius Reed clasped his hands behind his back as he gazed into the distance.
The darkness stirred.
“Damn! Someone’s trying to kill him!”
Eagle muttered helplessly, “Damn it! Do I really have to charge into the tiger’s den, knowing the danger?”
He could defy the Buddha Beads’ will.
But without the Buddha Beads, Eagle Vein might vanish forever.
Eagle gritted his teeth and, like a bat cutting through the night, appeared right beside Solaris Grove within moments.
Swish!
With a swift slash of his dagger, Eagle severed the ropes, grabbing Solaris Grove and hoisting him onto his shoulder.
Rustle!
But before he could leave, two figures suddenly materialized before him.
A monk and a Taoist.
“Amitabha, where are you heading, benefactor?” The Seven Star Arhat rotated his Buddha Beads in hand, his kindly expression masking his intentions. “Stealing what isn’t yours, especially in the dead of night, makes you a thief, does it not?”
“Get out of my way!” Eagle cursed internally. He knew there’d be trouble waiting.
But he couldn’t back out now—who knew if the figure lurking in the shadows would truly kill Solaris Grove?
“Benefactor, lay down the butcher’s knife and achieve enlightenment,” the Seven Star Arhat said, remaining steadfast.
“Where’s my damn knife?!”
Eagle glared at him, his voice filled with frustration: “Tell me—where’s my damn knife?!”
He only had one dagger, hidden within his sleeve.
This troublesome monk!
“The knife is in your heart.” The Seven Star Arhat continued rotating his Buddha Beads, his serene demeanor mismatched with his Taoist robes.
“Then tell me how to lay it down! What am I supposed to do—tear my heart out for you?”
Eagle felt helpless.
Two opponents standing before him—while his own teammate was dead weight on his shoulders.
“Precisely.” The Seven Star Arhat nodded and extended his hand. “Surrender your burden, and you shall find salvation.”
“You shameless monk, you’re downright despicable!”
Spat!
Eagle spit on the ground, his face twisted with wrath. “Get out of my way!”
“Iron Sword, isn’t it true that I convince people with virtue?” The Seven Star Arhat glanced at the Iron Sword Taoist beside him.
“Indeed, you’re utterly virtuous,” Iron Sword nodded.
“In that case, I’ll have no choice but to purify him,” the Seven Star Arhat said, closing his eyes and turning away. “Blessed be.”
“Die already!”
Swish!
Eagle’s dagger flew through the air!
The Seven Star Arhat snapped his eyes open and caught the dagger mid-flight with two fingers!
“And you had the audacity to claim you didn’t possess a knife!”
He forcefully twisted the weapon from Eagle’s grasp and plunged it deep into Solaris Grove!
Thud!
Thirteen consecutive strikes!
The already weakened Solaris Grove succumbed entirely.
“To hell with it all!” Eagle gave up, hurling the corpse away as he attempted to leap into the air!
But as soon as he rose, he found himself grounded again.
The reason? None other than a rusty iron sword pressing against his neck.
“You blasted monk!” Eagle shouted furiously.
“I’m a Taoist.” Iron Sword Taoist corrected, gesturing at his full head of black hair. “A Taoist—not a monk.”
“Then why the hell are you wearing monk’s robes?!” Eagle trembled with indignation.
Captured twice in one day—an unbearable humiliation!
“Uh…” Iron Sword Taoist hesitated before explaining, “Wearing monk’s robes makes begging for food easier.”
