Chapter 221: The ten legged compass.
"Is this a special service offered by the hotel?" The man asked, groping the air as he tried to reach for her waist.
They had only been in the room for less than five seconds and he was already getting handsy.
[Case confirmed.]
As soon as Mei Mei heard the confirmation, she pointed at the tiny bar in the room. "Only for special guests. Would you like a drink?"
Her target put down the silver brief case in a chair.
Mei Mei pretended to stumble. As she rose, she had a gun in her hand and she was not smiling coyly anymore. "Surprise." she winked, and shot a dart into his neck.
He slumped onto the floor with a soft grunt of disbelief.
Mei Mei had already scanned every room on this floor with the tennis ball like devices she placed on the wall. She was aware that he was alone in the room.
She put on gloves and lifted him from the ground, throwing him on the bed. She pulled his mouth open and tossed a memory fogging pill inside. When he woke up, he would not have a clear memory of her.
She was about to leave when she noticed the ring on his thumb finger. At first glance, it looked just like any other fancy piece of jewelry, a single green band with a faint shimmer. But along the edges, it was black and there was ultra thin pattern which was almost invisible. Etched in were patterns of eagles, glyphs and old word spy ciphers.
She pulled the ring off his finger and took it as well. Her intuition was telling her that the ring was important. This was her old intuition, before the fire, before Mo Liang. This was the same intuition which told her to keep a record of the crimes every member of the Mo family had committed during her time with them as a family member.
Case in hand, she left the room and locked the door. She swiped a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door, and returned to the room only to find the door slightly ajar with Jingzhe waiting for her anxiously.
He pulled her inside, took the case from her and tossed it on the bed. Still anxious, he spun her around gently looking over her body. "Are you harmed?"
"Of course not." She tipped her chin up proudly. "I am Jun Meilin, the daughter of Lady Chi Lian, this empire’s super spy...." She covered her mouth.
It seemed she would need to give Jingzhe a memory fogging pill as well.
"You have not spilled anything I don’t already know." He told her, backing away from her and moving to the bed. "What is in here?"
"How do you know that my mom is a spy?" She walked to the bed and threw herself down on it, bouncing up and down twice. She pulled the case to her side placed the EMP device on it and disabled its locks.
"I am not at liberty to say." He answered.
"Empress mother?" she asked.
Jingzhe shrugged, choosing not to respond with words so it was neither a yes nor a no. Later, if she ever found out that the Empress Mother was not the source of the information, he would remind her that he had not said so.
They both turned their attention to the inside of the silver case. There was only one thing sitting in the midst of black form and Mei Mei pulled it out quickly. It looked like a small bronze pot with ten legs. The surface was closed and it had markings like a compass.
"What is this pot system?"
The answer to her question did not come from the system but Jingzhe. "Holy cow!"
She wore a bemused expression as she looked at him. "I have never seen a holy cow but I take it that you are familiar with the ten legged pot."
"It is not a pot." He told her quickly. He took it from her hands, handling it with great care like it so precious. "This, if I am not mistaken is the ten legged compass. It is a mythical artifact that was said to lead great men to the thing their hearts desired the most.
Nothing is known about its maker but it was supposedly first owned by a desert prince, Sheik Alhari in the twelfth century. It is rumored that he made his fortune using the compass. He was the first ruler of a desert kingdom that thrived even more than kingdoms in grasslands."
He turned the spider like legs of the compass with precision, like he had done so many times before. "It disappeared after his death and resurfaced in the fifteenth century during the reign of Empress Zhaoyun of the Vermilion dynasty."
"The empress that sought immortality." Mei Mei murmured.
Jingzhe nodded. "She was obsessed with the compass, believing that it was the key to the gate of the after life. If she could find it, she would find a magical elixir that would help her live and reign forever.
She massacred many people, burned many villages and towns following the direction the compass pointed to. She worshiped it like a god, consulting it on every important decision that she had to make.
Her search for immortality was her downfall. Rebels set on her palace, massacring all her guards, servants, harem and children. They raided the royal temple and the vault. They killed the empress and made away with the loot."
"She had a harem!" Mei Mei exclaimed. "How do I not know that one of the few female empresses in the past of this empire had a harem."
"It was kept out of the educational books." He put the compass down and shook his head. "No--it was removed from most historical texts because some scholars thought it was shameful. And, there is not much known about Empress Zhaoyun except her brutality and search for immortality.
After her reign, Emperor Jinbai took the throne and he banned women from reading and holding official titles to prevent the rise of another Empress Zhaoyun. It was not until one hundred fifty years passed that women were allowed to study again."
"That bitch!" Mei Mei murmured. "She set us all back by one and a half centuries. There has not been a female empress after her."
"Actually there were two." Jingzhe corrected her.
She pursed her lips. "Two whose reigns combined lasted less than a year. One was empress for nine days!!! It was Zhaoyun that did all women dirty with her superstitions and insatiable lust."
Jingzhe could argue historical facts and fiction but he was more interested in the ten legged compass. "In 2002, it surfaced at an auction in Paris and a private buyer took it home, a man named Ian McLaughlin. He is the millionaire that poisoned the water at his offices, killing twenty eight of his employees.
After his arrest, someone with a glass eye broke into his house and beat his son into a coma just to steal the compass.
Over the years, this compass has been owned by many great men, all have gone on to do bad things and they always lose it. It is as if the compass just travels the world, corrupting people. How the hell did you come by it Mei Mei?"
