Chapter 219: Mission etiquette.
Mei Mei and Jingzhe showed up to the hotel, dressed in disguise. She had blonde hair, green eyes and the look of a foreigner. He had very dark long hair, a scruffy beard and small mole beneath his right eye. He also looked like a foreigner.
They had two Canadian passports which passed the scrutiny of the hotel computer system and and then they successfully made their way into the main lobby of the Thousand eyes resort.
The lobby was slightly crowded. A sizeable number of guests were checking in or finding their way to any of the ten elevators leading to various floors.
C4 had already hacked into the system, booking them room 605. They pulled their suitcases and went to the room.
Immediately, Jingzhe started scanning the room for bugs. He had no idea what Mei Mei was up to but he could not help thinking that they were on some kind of spy mission. Especially after Mei Mei started unpacking her suitcase and assembled a sniper rifle!

Back at their resort, inside a ball room, Jun Mingzhu was also on her own mission: mission learn how to walk, act and talk like a lady. She had been taught the basics of etiquette by her mother but they had only scratched the surface and Mingzhu had never used what she learned.
Now, under the watchful eye of all the older women in the Jun family, she had no choice.
Moreover, the empress mother was holding a thin wooden stick and using it to correct those whose form was not right.
Mingzhu had been looking forward to a night of getting to know each other with the baby owl, bed time stories and lots of giggling. Not being stuffed into a stiff dress and made to balance a tea cup on her head.
"You are among those that will greet the nobles and present the new nobles with flowers. You must be elegant, your movements should be controlled." The empress mother declared.
She was not just teaching, she was also showing them what was expected of them, balancing a tea cup on her own head, striding gracefully with ease like a swan. He diamond necklace blinked with judgement every time someone blinked out of rhythm.
"The three virtues of the poised are posture, elegance and control." She hissed like a vampire. "Chi Mi Mi and Jun Mingzhu, stop passing candy to each other. Jang Lian, excellent dear, you will be the star tomorrow."
Lian beamed with pride, smiling in the direction of her mother that gave her a thumbs up.
"Tch!" Su Manchu rolled her eyes. They all knew Long Wen would be the star. She was the mold off of which elegance, posture and control were created. She could execute every movement perfectly like a robot.
They had once seen her do a spin on one leg with a crystal cup on her head.
From the soft cushions of the large couch lounged the older females of the Jun family. They were sipping tea, watching the little girls in judgement.
"In my generation, we would curtsy in front of the mirror every morning. Lately, the only time it is done is when the national liberation day celebrations come around, the birthday of the emperor and Lunar new year. The rest of time, little girls walk past us and say ’t’sup granny’" Great great grandma Jun spoke in polite disapproval.
"T’sup granny!!" madame Feng laughed.
"Oh yes," Great great grandma Jun looked at Chi Mi Mi, the very criminal behind the popularizing of that greeting in their extended family.
"Come forward in pairs." The empress mother encouraged the girls.
Jang Lian and Long Wen went ahead first, gliding across the room like ballerinas born with synchronized ankles.
Mingzhu and Mi Mi went next. Mi Mi was okay, Mingzhu was a disaster. She attempted to be as perfect as Long Wen and in the end, her right shoe squeaked, she toppled over and sent the cup flying. It crashed on the floor. The handle broke and the top was chipped.
The Empress Mother did not flinch. "Again."
The cup was replaced with a book that fell off Mingzhu’s head every time she took a step. "Can we glue it on?" she asked, grinning at the Empress Mother.
The Empress Mother remained stoic.
Mingzhu hunched her small shoulders and sighed.
"It’s okay cousin, you can do it." Lian encouraged her. "Walking with grace is easy, like breathing for young ladies like us."
Mingzhu failed to understand what Lian meant. She preferred running to walking.
Things got even tougher from there as the balancing a tea cup exercise was resumed but with a saucer in one hand and perfect smile on the face.
"Oh no." Grandma Jun covered her eyes.
There were eight girls aged twelve and below that were participating. Six passed with flying colors, one tried and one failed completely. Mingzhu was the one that failed as her tea cup sloshed like a ship at sea. She staggered and hopped like a bunny and in the end, she crushed into the Empress Mother that glared at her like an older nun who was frustrated with a mischievous little girl that kept breaking all the abbey rules.
"It’s okay cousin, at least there was no actual hot tea in the cup and you made it to the finishing line." Mi Mi told her.
Long Wen helped her correct her posture. "Stop curving your body inwards, straighten your back."
Every understanding word and action from each of her cousins that was wielding an air of gentle superiority made Mingzhu want to throw a tantrum or punch someone. But, she gritted her teeth and kept going.
Then came the curtsy task, demonstrated in five stages. Long Wen as always was perfect, even the wind applauded her posture. Chi Mi Mi did it with the extravagance of an actress. Jang Lian did it with sweet smile.
Long Yuxuan, Jun Ya, Jun Ruolan and Jun Zhihan were also excellent. Mingzhu....not so much. She dipped, forgot which foot to tuck and stumbled, taking her tenth collapse of the night.
The older women sighed and covered their eyes.
"Mei Mei taught our Mingzhu how to dance like a street dancer that lives off of tips but she forgot the most important basics." Grandma Jun spoke sadly like she was so heartbroken.
"It is not too late for her to learn. There is still time." Chi Lian told them. She was more than sure of this as she had only learned etiquette as an adult. If she could do it, Mingzhu could do the same.
The lessons were over and to every girl, the Empress Mother delivered her judgement. Mingzhu was the last one. Everyone held their breath as if this moment would decide Mingzhu’s fate for the rest of her life.
"Jun Mingzhu." She said.
Mingzhu clenched her small fists. She was so scared that she would be called a failure and be embarrassed before all her cousins. Her eyes welled up with tears even before judgement was passed down.
