Chapter 217: My baby owl.
He cleared his throat and and turned his throat into a microphone. "I am giving you my four hundred million worth of property, assets and heirlooms, including my submarine, ten racing horses and a trust fund that pays you in diamonds every Monday."
Mingzhu blinked.
Mei Mei’s jaw dropped. "Four hundred million! Wait, does it mean she is richer than me?"
"No." C4 responded to her question.
"Yes." Jun Yi said. "Great great grandpa, I would also love to be paid in diamonds every Monday without doing a single job."
"I have something for everyone." he told her.
As he continued to read out what inheritance he was leaving for everyone, Mei Mei was reading through the list of properties that he had left for Mingzhu, which included a small castle in the kingdom of South Africa. There was a picture of it. It was perched dramatically on a hilltop, surrounded by lush greenery. It was a war museum and private hotel.
"When did we start buying castles in South Africa?" she raised her voice and looked around curiously.
"Like three years after you left." Jun Jie replied. "I have one too."
"Me too."
"Me too.
"And me."
"I."
"Not South Africa but Morocco."
"So, I am the only one here without one..." She looked at the children. "With the exception of the other young babies."
"Its okay baby girl, I will give you one." Muyang whispered to her. "Or you can take mine."
Chi Lian cleared her throat. She was reminding him that in case he had forgotten, she was a co-owner of their castle. He did not have the right to give it out randomly.
Mei Mei reminded Mingzhu in the mean time to thank her great great great grandfather. Mingzhu did not know the windfall that had landed at her feet. She hugged him and gave him some candy.
The dinner continued, lasting over two hours because food, laughter and conversation was overflowing.
When it was about to come to an end, the door was opened and the empress mother peeked in. Then she leaned back, pulled someone and pushed them into the room.
It was Jingzhe and in his arms was a white ball of fluff that looked like a kitten with very wide eyes. But as the kitten raised its eyes, everyone realized that it was less kitten and more baby owl.
Mingzhu was very excited to see him. "Daddy, daddy, Mingzhu is here. Mingzhu kept for you an oyster. Mommy tried to eat it by force but I fought heroically and saved it."
Mei Mei was not the only Jun to be caught off guard. She had not forcefully tried to eat the oyster. She reached for it, Mingzhu said no and she backed off. Why did her daughter make it seem as if they engaged in a game of tug of war for the oyster?
"Good girl." Jingzhe praised his daughter. Then he looked at the elders and bowed awkwardly and unnecessarily. "Good evening elders."
They responded in unison. Jingzhe followed up by greeting everyone else before turning to Mei Mei. He smiled tensely, worried that she would ignore him, and she had every right to.
"I brought you a baby owl as a peace offering." He said. "Can we talk in private?"
Mingzhu leaped up, "Daddy, you brought me an owl." She run to Jingzhe and hugged his legs. "Thank you daddy, I love my owl. I will treat it very well and put it with aunt Meow Meow."
"It is your mother’s owl." Jingzhe told her.
Mingzhu filtered his response. The word mother did not make it into her ears. "Daddy, I want to hold my owl. Is it a girl owl or a boy owl? What name should I give her? Why does she have so much hair?"
"Feathers Mingzhu, not hair." Mei Mei corrected.
Mingzhu was only partially listening, her eyes were on the owl. Her arms were pleading for it to be handed over so that she could start playing with it already. She wanted to go and find her cousins so that she could show off her owl.
She was so excited that she was bouncing off the soles of her feet.
"Just give her the owl." Mei Mei said in a voice that communicated her surrender. Mingzhu was fascinated because it was something new. Eventually, she would hand over the owl.
Jingzhe handed the owl to Mingzhu and he left the private room with Mei Mei. Their conversation was taken back to her hotel room where they could have some privacy.
She had left the room in disarray when she went to yoga. Housekeeping had cleaned it and folded all the clothes for her, putting them away neatly. They had even done her laundry and packed the yoga clothes away.
Both of them behaved awkwardly, each afraid to speak up first.
Mei Mei decided to go first, after all, she was the older one.
"I..." They both started together and kept quiet after clashing.
"You go first." She told Jingzhe.
He drew out a short measured breath and lowered his head, avoiding her eyes. "I am sorry for what I said. I wish that I would take it back if I could. I just...." He run a hand through his hair and sighed. "I get a little wound up when it comes certain things. There are some things that happened in my past which I cannot tell you about just yet. But, someday, I promise to tell you everything."
"Is it related to the offer of employment from the empress mother?" She asked him.
He raised his head and nodded. "I just don’t want to be exploited or controlled. My life is good right now, I would rather not change it but, in order to be with you, I realize that I do need to change."
"Not if you don’t want to." She jumped in. Approaching him, she took his hands. I talked to Rose about our conversation and she made me realize some things. You have your own ideas and they have brought you this far. They turned you into a billionaire. What right do I have imposing my ideas on you? Clearly, you are much more sensible than I was at your age."
"No, sister, you were sensible too." He rushed to compliment her back. "You were the original brains behind Space M. You grew that company in one and half years and even after you were pushed out of active participation, you still wrote all the business plans and helped it grow."
She rolled her eyes. "Don’t lie. Aside from that, my life was a mess. My noble status was of no help at the time and I was actually worse off than other commoners. A Zhe, just go ahead and be whatever you want to be. We will make it work."
Her answer lightened his heart, but he also had news of his own.
