Chapter 214: Jingzhe, seeking advice.
Jingzhe was having an almost similar conversation to the one Mei Mei and Rose were having at that very moment. He had only been able to stay in his room for an hour. After spending it attending a virtual meeting and sulking, he went to Mei Mei’s room and knocked on the door.
She was not in so he walked to the elevator and searched for floor 101 but he failed to find it. For five minutes, he strongly considered hacking into the hotel computers.
In the end, he gave up and went to the beach to find Mingzhu. She was buried in the sand with only her head sticking out. Liang was feeding her snacks. She had no plans of being separated from her cousins any time soon.
So, he found his mother who was sitting at the open bar and flirting with a bartender that looked half her age. He pulled her away and the found the most isolated part of the beach and settled into beach chairs which came with automatic parasols that rose as soon as they sensed weight.
After scanning the area for bugs, he told her all that had transpired.
He had just finished narrating the part where he told Mei Mei that he was not one of them.
Jingzhe fell back against the soft big beach chair and groaned. "I screwed up mom, I should not have said that. The conversation was a little testy but I put a giant clown foot in my mouth and ruined it all."
Madam Feng whacked him on the thigh with her palm. "It serves you right. You had the chance to make me a noble lady and you turned it down!!"
Jingzhe sat up, wincing. He had forgotten all the times his mother had sighed with envy while watching royal parades, tea parties, horse races and the like.
Madam Feng sighed sadly. "As your mother, I cannot make choices for you or force you to decide on something. If I could, I would have forced you to date another woman back then. A woman your age, without a child and not entangled with your brother."
"Mom..." Jingzhe gave her a dismayed look.
Madam Feng was unapologetic as she returned a firm gaze. "Jingzhe, no mother wakes up in the morning and goes to a church or temple and prays for their only son to bring home his brother’s ex wife and child, claiming them as his own.
We pray for our children’s happiness and when you said Jun Meilin was your happiness, no matter how uncomfortable I was with it, I made my peace and embraced her and Mingzhu."
Jingzhe’s heart that had been escalating started to relax. He did not want to argue with Mei Mei while arguing with his mother at the same time.
Madam Feng put down her coconut mojito very carefully as she did not wish for it to spill. After steadying it, she looked at her son once again. "A Zhe, do you remember what I first said to you when I found the very first letter you wrote to Jun Meilin?"
Jingzhe nodded and repeated the words slowly, dragging them through his throat. "You said, people like her don’t date people like us and even if they date us, we are a passing dream. They eventually end up with one of their own kind."
Madam Feng nodded. He recalled it all, word for word. "You were thirteen at the time. She had saved you from some bullies and you started writing letters to her. Letters that you did not even have the guts to send out. Somehow, your gratefulness turned into a crush and you wrote your first love letter." She pinched his cheek, smiling like she was so proud of him.
"Mom..." He pulled his back, complaining softly.
Madam Feng drew her hand back. "Over the years, I have watched you reject every woman I introduced to you. I have watched you be firm and decisive in turning down ever woman that hit on you.
You secretly followed Jun Meilin around after she left her family, made sure she had a job. You paid her neighbors to help her and Mingzhu out with whatever she needed. That security guard that put Mingzhu in a dog house, you made sure that he lost his job at the building.
The day Meilin almost died at Mo Liang’s hands after he returned from space, you nearly lost your mind because you were afraid that she was going to die. You came home with her blood on your shirt and you were trembling.
When she decided to leave Mo Liang, your eyes sparkled in a way that I had not seen them do in such a long time. And when you decided to pursue her no matter the forces against you, what did I ask you?"
"If I was sure that I would persist no matter the storm." He muttered.
"How many times did I ask you this?" She asked him.
"Three." He answered.
Madam Feng took his hands and leaned forward. "And what was you answer all three times?"
"That I would brave every storm as long as she accepted me." He said.
Madam Feng squeezed his hands, "You inserted yourself into her life and that of Mingzhu. They are now part of us and you are part of them. You are part of her world Jingzhe, and her world is complicated.
But you knew this before going in. You have always known that she is a Jun, that she is a noble and she is close to royalty. You used to watch her attend international and national functions on television where she would be surrounded by all sorts of dignitaries. Soon she will be doing that again.
She speaks multiple languages, she was a teenage royal correspondent working for Phoenix media. She was once a fourteen year old Kite Air ambassador, the first and only one. She raced horses on behalf of the Jun and royal families.
She won titles for racing horses in Dubai, United kingdom and Jordan. Jun Meilin dined with royalty all around the world. In her teenage years, she was more famous than all the royal princesses her age or close to her in age.
Her life was glamorous and she is reclaiming her it now, slowly by slowly. Ask yourself this, if you are together, where will you be when she is doing all these things? Will you be here at home with me, watching her on television as some other noble man hits on her and cheers her on or will you be out there with her, supporting her with Mingzhu and the rest of her family.
You cannot expect her to give up that part of her life for you. She already did that for Mo Liang and discovered that it was a mistake which she will never make again. If you love her, you are going to need to overcome your biases and fears and venture forward with one mind.
If not break it off tonight. It is not too late for us to get back on a plane, go home and move out of her house in her absence."
What she did not say was that they would have to move out of the estate as well because she did not know how she would face Mingzhu.
