Chapter 663: 309 Riot
Chapter 663: Chapter 309 Riot
Listening to the faint creak of the cart wheels, Leon quietly followed the wagon transporting goods down a secluded street.
He could tell that the other party was deliberately taking the small road, and even though they occasionally encountered simple questioning by patrolling soldiers, the official documentation from the bribed quartermaster, along with the knight tournament equipment openly transported in the cart, easily dispelled the doubts of the night patrol and Royal City Guards.
It wasn’t until they reached the western alleys, slightly away from the city center, that Leon saw the plump quartermaster dismount from the wagon and hurriedly leave alone.
Watching the back of the bribed official disappear around the street corner, Leon turned back and instructed Olivia, “Follow him! Take control of that quartermaster, and bring him back to our base.”
The young girl obeyed, immediately turning around, her steps silent as she melted into the darkness and vanished in the shadows.
Leon continued to track the slowly advancing transport wagon.
As he surveyed the surroundings, he noted that the accommodation arranged for the Kantadar knights attending the meeting was further away from the major sites and the city center within Oran Royal City than that of Orland Kingdom’s own noble knights.
After all, the tournament had attracted a considerable number of knights from the Southern Kingdom.
The most knights from the south were from the “Vellozal Territory” in western Kantadar and the surrounding “Magya Territory”, with their numbers recorded as arriving in groups of three or five totaling over three hundred.
Compared to other regions directly affected by the Undead Calamity and the ravages of the out-of-control Urians in Kantadar County, the Kantadar western coast, only facing an offensive from the West Territory forces, still endured a manageable level of conflict and had become the last prime area of the Southern Kingdom, accepting many displaced families; thus, the presence of so many noble knights wasn’t surprising.
As for the Ustato Territory knights who came with the new king, Caso, along with a few original eastern knights from the areas controlled by the Holy War Alliance, they totaled just a few dozen.
The three hundred or so knights from the south, including their attendants, numbered over a thousand. Even though there had never been a case in Western Continent history of foreign knights causing trouble on the host’s territory during a knight tournament, Oran Royal City officials, considering security factors, still concentrated and supervised the Kantadar people in the major southern and western stations in the city.
Though Leon wasn’t familiar with Oran Royal City, he could distinguish that his current location was indeed near the station where the western Kantadar noble knights were stationed.
Carefully following through another street, Leon raised his eyebrows, suddenly perceiving the natural elements in the air being stirred by rhythmic undulations.
When he sidled along the wall and glanced again, he was surprised and bewildered to find… the tracking target had vanished into thin air.
It wasn’t a case of losing direction; such a long street before him— the wagon would have to grow wings to cover it promptly.
No doubt, this was magic.
To make a large freight wagon, in motion, vanish so quickly, even Kovis, who had studied three types of invisibility spells for years, could not achieve that.
There was a powerful spellcaster nearby!
Leon wasn’t surprised, given that this matter concerned the Athias Empire; it was no wonder that mages from the Eastern Continent had infiltrated the Royal City.
Realizing the danger of the hidden enemy, he halted his step.
No rash action could be taken.
No need to seek personal heroism; Kovis was probably already actively contacting Ines, reporting the emergency situation to the kingdom’s higher-ups overnight.
From the information overheard earlier, it seems that the Athias people, even if not within the Kantadar’s station, were undoubtedly related to them.
During the tournament, with the formidable individuals from the Northern Kingdom gathering in Oran City, and with the Royal City’s imperial guards, as long as the army could be mobilized quickly, they could entirely control the Kantadar people and capture the infiltrators in an enclosed space.
Not wanting to expose himself and alert the enemy, Leon noted the last place of losing the trail and cautiously retraced his steps back.
Mindfully avoiding the night watchman, he raced at full speed back to the Avalon team’s station.
The courtyard was ablaze with lights, the torchlight flickering in front of the small building, and the Death Wing Knights and accompanying attendants, rallied by Olivia, stood armored and ready.
“Has Olivia returned?” Leon asked hurriedly as he entered the first floor, addressing Hawk.
“Yes… yes, she has, and brought… a captive, on… the second floor!” Hawk nodded and pointed upstairs.
Leon swiftly climbed to the second floor, immediately hearing the sound of loud slaps upon arrival.
In front of the stout quartermaster, bound to a chair, sat Lokhak in a crimson armor, with an intimidating expression.
On a small table moved from somewhere in the kitchen or luggage, lay an assortment of small knives, hooks, hand saws, and pliers.
While fiercely delivering slaps, Lokhak picked up a hook and menacingly threatened:
“….My friend says, there was an ancient saying, ‘Sisy Wizard’s Revenge,’ advising that recognizing the situation is the way of the wise; I hope you, fool, are willing to be wise, or else I’ll have to check personally to see how much of tonight’s dinner remains in your stomach.”
However, there was no need for such threats, as the trembling fleshy official was already scared out of his wits, crying and begging.
“…Injustice! I’ve confessed everything there is! I only accepted some money to help the southerners transport some non-standard competition riding spears; how could I be connected with foreign enemies, sob… How can a few wooden spears start a rebellion? I haven’t heard of any Athias villains in my life! No no no no!…
Watching the trembling bribed official tied to the chair, frightened by Lokhak’s demonstration with scissors and pliers, Leon heard familiar footsteps and turned his head.
Olivia, not wanting her presence to diminish Lokhak’s intimidation power, hurriedly pushed the door open and came out when she heard Leon’s steps.
She was also already equipped with armor and a battle robe, in a state ready for combat.
“No news from Acro?” Leon
“No, Acro probably hasn’t reached Ines yet.” Olivia replied helplessly.
Leon nodded, calming himself to continue the wait.
It hadn’t been too long; after all, in these days without emergency calls, and without the permission to freely enter the royal palace’s inner court, representing himself by Kovis, whether trying to meet Lydwen or Ines, couldn’t be quick.
However, a direct report to the throne was currently the quickest way to mobilize the city’s armed forces.
Were it like ordinary people filing a report, going through the layers of the Royal City’s civic security system, let alone that officials would have finished work and gone home to rest by then, with few minor officials on duty at night.
Even if it were daytime, they couldn’t expedite the procedure swiftly to achieve city-wide alert; those responsible for the city guards, the imperial guards, couldn’t possibly maneuver the large army overnight due to his report. The city’s defense leaders might, at most, send a few teams of warriors to investigate.
But Leon knew this was far from enough.
An attitude facing a war must be adopted; those Athias people, irrespective of other skills, were top-notch professionals in creating chaos and destruction; the tragedy of Rolannar was still vivid in his mind.
