Kissing Hellfire: Marry Me, Evil Lord
Chapter 65: Dead Place

Chapter 65: Dead Place

Lauren groaned in pain when her back hit the rocky ground after she was pushed inside the mirror.

She opened her eyes only to see the dark thunderous sky above her.

She pulled herself up and found herself in the middle of a ruined forest. The tall trees looked dry and didn’t have a single leaf. No sun, no flowers, everything was in grayscale. She could sense no life in the place.

She gritted her teeth remembering how Queen Thalia pushed her inside the mirror. She thought the ancient mirrors in the room had little to no power because of their old age. The King didn’t even mind them and only treated them as a collection. The wicked queen must have realized this mirror’s power so she intentionally asked her in the room of mirrors to execute her wicked plan.

Standing in the middle of nowhere, Lauren scanned her surroundings to see if there was a way out for her, but she found none. There was no mirror, no portals, nothing.

All she could see was the dead things around her, the dead trees and plants, and the skulls and bones scattered on the ground. The place was grim, and Lauren didn’t have any idea what kind of place she got into. She didn’t study the power of the ancient mirrors so she didn’t know how she could get out.

Perhaps the mirror had the power to trap people in the place inside it?

She muttered a curse and was about to walk, hoping to see a way that could get her out of the ruined place, when she saw the things flying in the air, encircling her as if they just found their new prey.

Wraiths.

The most dangerous type of evil spirit. Although they only looked like dark smoke with red eyes and no faces, they could kill someone easily. In some lands, wraiths still existed in some places where the dark energy was strong, but with the presence of some skilled priestesses, the power of the wraiths was put under control.

However, in this place, there was no skilled priestess and she was all by herself.

"Damn," she cursed when a wraith attacked her with the speed of lightning, giving her a cut on her arm.

More wraiths arrived. She realized blood for them was like how honey was to the bees.

She had a pistol with her as she always carried one around, but silver bullets could bring no harm to wraiths. They were evil spirits after all. They were already dead.

Bringing her hand forth, she uttered an incantation in her mind to create a temporary barrier around her to block the wraiths’ attacks.

Back when Alec’s cousin, Samantha, asked for her blood, it was true she did something to the blood she served to her. Inferior and arch mages were supposed to utter incantations vocally to cast spells, but for some reason Lauren couldn’t fathom, she could cast spells by uttering the incantations in her mind, which was strange because she never heard of another mage practicing it. There wasn’t even a single thing about it written in books.

In casting spells, mages and vampire mages were only categorized into two: the ones who had to utter incantations orally, and the ones who didn’t need incantations at all as they could cast spells with just a command from their minds.

And Lauren belonged to neither.

She touched her wounded arm and her palm was painted with blood. She looked at the barrier she created which she knew wouldn’t last long. The place seemed to be filled with a lot of dark energy which made the wraiths stronger. And as they continued to attack, more cracks appeared in the barrier.

Lauren also felt strange, as if something was slowly sucking her energy out of her.

No... the more time she spent in that place, the weaker she would become.

The barrier broke and she was slammed into a tree’s huge trunk because of the wraiths’ attack. She studied many spells, but she didn’t learn how to fight off evil spirits like wraiths because mage priestesses were usually the ones who were skilled enough to cast divine spells, not a normal mage like her.

She groaned in pain but she tried to stay on her feet. She looked around to see if there was any body of water but there was none.

With the growing number of wraiths surrounding her, she realized she could only do one thing.

She made another barrier to buy herself some time and pulled the long gold hairpin from her hair.

Closing her eyes, Lauren concentrated and uttered an incantation in her mind. Soon, her hand holding the hairpin emitted white light, and the hairpin transformed into a sword with its blade flickering with lightning.

It was impossible for a normal mage like her to create a spellbound object with divine power, but sensing the dark energy looming in the sky, she remembered that a mage might be able to do it if the divine power of the place was very strong, and with how she noticed the storm of lightning in the horizon which she had never seen in the real world before, she thought she could give it a try. So, she made use of the lightning’s energy through a dangerous spell.

As the spell was too strong for her body, she felt how her body weakened halfway through it that she almost fell on her knees, and how warm blood gushed out of her nose.

"No, I refuse to die in this cold dark place," she said under her breath, and by the time the barrier was broken, she held the hilt of the sword tightly.

Pushing the sword forth, she slashed it in the air which created a wave of lightning and the force cast off the wraiths.

However, she knew that the power of lightning wasn’t enough to get rid of the wraiths. They soon came back and she had no choice but to fight them while she ran further east.
