Kissing Hellfire: Marry Me, Evil Lord
Chapter 64: Room of Mirrors

Chapter 64: Room of Mirrors

After changing into her nightdress, Lauren went out of the closet and found Alec reading paperwork on his table at a far corner of the room. She didn’t say anything and went to the bed.

However, staring at him with a load of papers on his desk, she grew curious.

"Do you usually have a lot of case files and other paperwork to read because you are the head of the defense ministry and part of the council? Don’t you have subordinates to help you with that?" she asked while laying on her right side, facing Alec.

Lauren never worked in the council or any sector of the administration so she had little to no idea. She figured it must be hard though.

He glanced at her, raising a brow as if wondering why she was suddenly curious.

"I have, but as the head of an important sector of a kingdom, I need to make sure everything is running smoothly to prevent things from going out of control. My subordinates give me reports every day and I have to read them to know if everyone is doing their jobs right. And as a senior member of the council, I only work on some big cases. Why, do you want to be my secretary and help me with these?"

Lauren grimaced. "I’m the future queen. Why would I be a secretary?"

"One can never be so sure," he smirked at her.

"We are both determined to have the throne for personal reasons, and you don’t look like a loser to me. I have faith you won’t prove me wrong."

She was no clairvoyant but she knew the queen’s throne would belong to her someday. She knew because she was willing to do whatever it would take.

"I thought you were tired? You should sleep now, Lauren. Stop staring at me like you are inviting me to your bed."

"You are just imaging things, husband," she hissed and rolled on her other side.

During breakfast the next morning, King Martin announced that Eloise and Prince Dominic’s engagement soiree would happen in two days to silence the negative rumors about Eloise. The King asked Cassandra and Lauren to help with the preparation and although Queen Thalia didn’t like involving Lauren in the matters concerning her daughters, she didn’t go against the King’s word.

Lauren left the castle that afternoon. She went to Sullivan family’s establishment and met Ethan.

"Do you know if there is a medicine that will make a black mage undergoing transition run wild?" she asked, sipping a tea by the window.

The sitting Ethan in front of her crossed his legs and tapped his knee with his fingers. He thought about the question and after a moment, he answered, "I’m not an expert in drugs so how should I know?"

His forehead creased suspiciously. "Why do you ask? Do you know someone who is undergoing black mage transition?"

"It is Eloise."

Ethan’s lips parted and a hearty laugh escaped his lips.

"Is that true?" He shook his head, smiling. "My, my... how careless. Now it became easier for you to get rid of her. She wants to be the queen but how can she do that if she might run wild at any time? There may be medicines made to prevent a black mage from running wild but a black mage’s blood in a person’s body will never disappear. It can be suppressed for the time being but it is like an illness with no cure."

"Yes, I just found that she is using medicines to make the transition process slower. But I need to execute my plans as soon as possible. I am sure there are people in the court working with the rebels and my father is not capable enough to handle them. I need to gain power in the court, Ethan, and breaking the limbs of the royal family is only the first step."

"I think I know what you are thinking now," Ethan nodded. "Fine. I will use my connections to find the drug that you want."

When Lauren went back to the castle, a servant went to tell her that the King requested her presence in the room of ancient mirrors. She found it odd that her father wanted to talk to her when he was usually busy with court affairs. Still, she went to the room.

But when she stepped into the room, she didn’t find King Martin and there was no one inside.

The door opened and her eyes narrowed when she saw the Queen.

"So, it is not father who wants to meet me. Why, Your Majesty, do you have something important to discuss with me?"

Queen Thalia slowly walked toward her until they were both standing in the middle of the mirrors. Wickedness was gleaming in the Queen’s eyes.

"I know you are planning to sabotage Eloise’s betrothal. If you think I don’t know how your mind works, you are wrong, Lauren."

Lauren calmly replied, "There is a saying that birds with the same feathers understand each other. Perhaps it is because I grew up under your vicious care and I was influenced by your ways?"

"Hah! You were born evil, Lauren. You inherited it from your slutty mother so don’t blame me for what you have become."

Lauren’s face turned hard at the mention of her mother.

"Are you so bored that you seek entertainment through picking a petty fight with me, Your Majesty?"

Queen Thalia smiled. "Of course not. I asked you here for a reason," she said and before Lauren could guess what she was up to, the Queen pushed Lauren forcefully to the big mirror behind her.

When Lauren’s back hit the mirror, its glass emitted white light and its surface turned into water, sucking Lauren inside. The next second, there was no trace of her being inside the room and the mirror went back to its original state.

The Queen laughed evilly. "Poor Lauren, stuck in the soul-eating mirror. Die peacefully, dearie. I should have studied these mirrors in the past. I didn’t know they could be quite helpful," she muttered to herself while walking out of the room with a victorious smile.
