Chapter 44: East valley village
"Male entertainer?" Alec’s cold gaze dropped to Lauren, the way his eyebrow raised demanded her answer.
"He is a musician," Lauren put it in a nicer way because the way he spoke the words was like he was spitting some filth. It wasn’t new how most people looked down on those who worked in brothels but David was a decent man.
"A musician in a brothel is a male entertainer, dear wife." How he called her ’dear wife’ didn’t sound sweet to both women’s ears, rather it sounded like a threat.
"He is a friend," Lauren said, noticing the malicious glint in Alec’s eyes. "He doesn’t do a living by selling his body. He plays music," she clarified because with the look he was giving her, she knew he was quick to judge their relationship.
By the time they arrived at East Valley village, it was already time for lunch and if Lauren didn’t mention that she had been starving, Alec wouldn’t tell the coachman to stop by an inn, forgetting that his companies were a mage and a human, not a vampire like him who could function throughout the day even without eating.
"I will wait here. Be quick," Alec chose to stay in the carriage, letting the two women help themselves. Even when he was reading during their whole journey, he felt how stiff the human was because of his intimidating presence. Vivian was doing them a favor so he didn’t mind giving her a little break. He also knew Lauren must have things to say to her friend that she couldn’t speak about with him around.
"Your husband is so scary, Lauren!" Finally, Vivian was able to breathe when they went inside the small inn. "Those dark eyes, eerie voice, holy goddess! I can’t even imagine how you can stomach living with him under the same roof. Don’t you fear for your life, Your Highness?"
Lauren shook her head while smiling. Vivian looked like a lamb inside the carriage earlier who didn’t dare make a noise and now she was back with her old noisy self.
"Why did he act that way when I mentioned David anyway? Is he jealous?" Vivian asked in the middle of stuffing her mouth with food.
"He can’t be," Lauren was sure.
In their contract, one of the rules Alec brought up was that she should keep herself from having a sexual relationships with other men for the whole contract duration. Since she wanted the game to be fair, she asked if he could do the same and he agreed. After all, they didn’t make any rule about physical contact and were free to satisfy each other’s needs as a man and woman.
It must be the reason why Alec was curious when David was mentioned, thinking that she violated another rule.
As they continued to eat, Lauren noticed a couple at the next table. The big man who seemed to be not older than thirty was busy eating but the woman was just sitting in front of him, unmoving, with her food left untouched. Lauren thought they must have fought like normal couples, but when she was about to look away, she noticed something odd.
The woman, although most of her face was covered by her long black hair, Lauren still caught the wound that peeked on her left cheek. It was turning black and looked like rotten flesh. She could also smell a faint reek of blood and soil in the air along with the strong smell of delicacies served by the inn.
Only a black mage could have a wound like that.
Lauren continued to observe the couple discreetly. Later on, when the man noticed the woman wasn’t eating anything, he asked her to eat. The woman didn’t reply and Lauren saw how she was clenching her fist on her lap, her dark veins protruding on her pale skinny hand as if she was suppressing something in her.
The woman must have no idea she was undergoing a black mage transition, Lauren thought. She couldn’t feel any appetite for the food laid in front of her because she wanted the soul of the man. However, as she didn’t know what she was craving, she was trying to hold herself while wondering what was happening to her. Lauren knew that if the woman was aware of her turning into a black mage, she must have left the inn where she could suddenly run wild because of how she was depriving herself of what her body needed.
"Lauren, are you listening to me?" Vivian asked when she noticed Lauren seemed distracted while she kept on talking.
Before Lauren could pay attention to Vivian, the loud breaking sound from a dozen of glasses that slipped from a servant’s hands echoed in the whole inn, followed by the people’s shrieks when they witnessed how the woman next to Lauren and Vivian’s table jumped on the table and wrapped her hands around the man’s neck to consume his energy and soul. Her eyes had turned all black and her face and forehead filled with black hideous veins, making the woman look nothing less than a monster.
"A black mage!" someone shouted in horror.
Before anyone could do anything, Alec made his way inside the inn and walked calmly toward the black mage.
Alec pulled the black mage away from the man and with his vampire strength, when he smashed her to the wall, it created cracks in the wall and made the inn’s ground shake a little. In just a matter of seconds, the black mage was reduced to ashes after he ripped her head from her body.
"No! No! She is my wife! Why did you kill her?!" The man who was almost killed by his own wife turned to Alec, could not accept what her wife had become.
"Would you rather have her kill you?" Alec asked without an ounce of sympathy for the man’s loss. "If you want it so bad, I can send you to accompany her in hell."
