Kissing Hellfire: Marry Me, Evil Lord -
Chapter 43: Who is David?
Chapter 43: Who is David?
"Let’s work together then," Alec said the next morning during breakfast, giving Lauren his answer regarding the talk they had in the dungeon.
"Since you are still keeping the man alive, it means you don’t have answers yet. Have you found out what kind he belonged to before he turned into a savage?" Lauren asked. She had a feeling about it but she could not just rely on instinct. It was the help of an expert they should seek.
"Dr. Bentley who is working for the council has been running some tests for a week now, but he has yet to come up with something solid to prove what kind the man belonged before turning into a monster. He is an expert but with this new creature’s different body compounds, it is hard for him to come up with a concrete finding within a short time."
"If the council doctor knows about this, I must have been wrong to think you are working alone on this case. Who else in the council knows?"
"Chief Councilman Lionel entrusted this task to me. No one else in the council knows except him and Dr. Bentley." Putting down his glass of blood wine, he shot her a challenging look. "Since you insisted on us working together on this, how can you help me then?"
"I know someone who can answer our questions. My friend, Vivian, the woman who raised her is a one-of-a-kind skilled mage priestess staying in East Valley village. She can see through someone’s past just by making use of the person’s blood. She is currently in seclusion and doesn’t accept guests but if we bring Vivian, we can talk it out with her."
"Let’s go meet her then," Alec was quick to decide.
If what Lauren said was true, that people turning to savages had something to do with the black mages, there was no time to waste. With every passing minute, another innocent life might fall into the wicked’s trap. Alec had no plans to play hero, but if these vile creatures would raise havoc in their land, he would surely have a lot of work to do, which he would not appreciate.
"Did you mean now?" Lauren asked, eyes widening a bit.
"Why, do you have something else to do today?"
"No."
"Then we should go," said Alec and told the butler to prepare the carriage before talking to Lauren again. "Prepare what you need. We will leave in less than an hour."
Lauren wanted to say that she needed to ask Vivian first since they would tag her along on their little trip, but Alec’s decision seemed irrevocable. Besides, she was also dying to know how these people were suddenly turning into savages and if a cure was possible. Maybe she could just give Vivian some money so she wouldn’t mind it. That woman was a sucker for gold coins even though her business had never gone through bankruptcy.
"Where are you going?"
Lauren was about to get off the carriage when it stopped by Vivian’s brothel so she could talk to Vivian, but Alec’s question pinned her back to her seat.
"Are we not here to fetch Vivian? I need to talk to her first, so I will go inside."
"Fletcher," instead of giving her an answer he called the footman who was quick to respond. "Ask Miss Vivian here, tell her my wife and I are waiting for her."
Lauren narrowed her eyes at Alec. "What is wrong with you? We are asking Vivian a favor here and you are acting like you have the right to boss her around."
"It is a brothel, Lauren," he hissed. "If you don’t want to be a laughingstock again, restrain yourself from stepping on such places."
"We came here on a purpose and I’m with you, people won’t find it worth the gossip."
When Vivian arrived, the footman opened the door for her. Upon seeing Alec inside, she felt nervous. Any ordinary human would.
"Come, Vivian." If Lauren didn’t call her, she wouldn’t have stepped inside and dared breathe into the same space as the vampire lord.
Lauren took Vivian beside her while Alec was sitting in front of them, his eyes on the book he was busy with. He just let Lauren do the talking with her friend since the job was simple.
"What is it, Lauren?"
"Viv, I need your help. I need you to bring us to Aunt Priscilla and ask her to help us..."
Even though it was a confidential matter, Lauren had to tell Vivian about the rise of savages for her to fully understand the situation. After feeding her information just enough to make her see how urgent and crucial the matter was, Vivian agreed to take them to the mage priestess whom Vivian considered as her family despite them not sharing the same blood.
As they embarked on their journey to East Valley village, Vivian couldn’t help but feel the different air inside the carriage. If she and Lauren were the only ones in the carriage, she could have been talking about a lot of things now and laughing without restrain, but with them having the warlord’s company, she felt like there was an ax hanging on her neck and she would meet death if she dared make a mistake.
"You are too silent, Vivian. Don’t you have something to tell me? I couldn’t visit you these days. How is your business doing?"
Lauren was glad Vivian came with them, otherwise, she would have nothing to get herself busy with while traveling. Alec was too engrossed with his book, and even if he wasn’t reading, she doubted if he would make any conversation interesting.
"Oh, w-well... now that you asked me, I remember David came yesterday looking for you-"
"Who is David?"
Uh-oh.
Vivian’s lips parted, realizing what she just said, and how she got Alec’s attention when this whole time, she was trying not to make any mistake that would put her life at risk. She still wanted to get married and have a family of her own. She couldn’t die too soon.
"M-milord, he is a male entertainer in my brothel," Vivian answered which didn’t please Alec at all.
