Kissing Hellfire: Marry Me, Evil Lord -
Chapter 250: Watching Eyes
Chapter 250: Watching Eyes
Alec sat in the dark corner of his room, his eyes fixated on the rectangular object on his table that looked like a mirror, but in truth, it was a magic tool that connected to another magical tool inside Lauren’s room, allowing him to watch Lauren even when he wasn’t present in her room.
She had to continue her life as a maid in the castle and if he went there to personally check on her, she might only become uncomfortable. Worse, it might trigger the defense of the sealing spell again.
Matthias was standing beside the table, watching the scenes unfold in the magic tool as well.
"Should we inform the others, Your Majesty?" Matthias asked and Alec knew he meant Lauren’s friends and her henchmen, Darius and Julian who were like family to her.
"Invite them over tomorrow. It is better they know so they will be careful around her," Alec said without tearing his gaze off the magic tool, his eyes were only focused on Lauren. If he didn’t tell those people close to Lauren, they would only get curious and their actions might trigger her memories which was best avoided.
"Are we still holding the royal banquet tomorrow night?"
"As much as I want to do nothing else and keep an eye on Lauren, I don’t think keeping Bodeville’s royal family here longer is wise. I also cannot go back on my word after we have agreed on the economic alliance. I don’t fear offending anyone, but I would rather avoid the trouble, especially at this time. I won’t let any harm befall my wife again."
Alec watched Lauren through the magic tool until she fell asleep. When her friends left her room, he sneaked into her room and watched her in the shadows without making a single noise.
Auburn hair flowed on the pillows, long and thick lashes, and slightly parted lips as she breathed softly—Lauren looked beautiful as she slept.
Alec’s jaw tightened. He yearned to touch her, to lay by her side and to lock her in his embrace. Yet all he could afford was to stand in the dark corner of the room and watch her as if he were adoring a great painting.
Still, he was grateful that Lauren found her way back to him. He had no idea what happened five years ago, but perhaps he would only find the answer once Lauren regained her memories. Perhaps she knew how she survived and who the strong mage was that cast a sealing spell on her.
The sky was bright the next day. One sign of Lauren waking up and Alec was instantly out of the room, leaving no trace behind as if he were never there even when the truth was, he stayed the whole night and barely blinked.
There were new sets of maid’s clothes by the bedside table when Lauren woke up. She cleaned up and put on the new clothes. Just after she tied her hair into a bun, someone knocked.
It was Matthias.
Matthias looked at Lauren with subtle wariness now that he knew she was the queen, yet he made sure he wouldn’t make a mistake in addressing her. The king had given him instructions that were to be strictly followed.
"Miss Davis, come with me."
Lauren felt a little anxious as he walked behind Matthias and followed him to the king’s chambers. They entered the king’s study where Alec was sipping blood tea.
She observed Alec as they approached him. Alec was sitting on the tea table, his eyes were on the papers he was holding. He looked serious and composed this time, as if no commotion had happened in the past two days. Did he finally let go of her case and now she was back to normal life as a maid? She hoped so.
Matthias gestured to Lauren to stand several feet away from Alec. She gave Alec a bow and kept her gaze on the floor.
"It’s a good day, isn’t it, Miss Davis?"
Alec’s casual question stunned Lauren. She was glad he wasn’t addressing her by his wife’s name like yesterday, but servants weren’t supposed to be addressed with such courtesy.
But how could she question a king’s way of addressing a person?
"It is, Your Majesty."
She wasn’t directly looking at him, but she could sense his every move. He stood up from his chair and left the papers on the table.
She felt a familiar uneasiness when he took a step closer. But only one step. He stopped there and didn’t take another one as if there was an invisible barrier between them.
There was relief for a moment, but a subtle ache followed, which she could not understand.
"There was a misunderstanding and I apologize for that. I thought you were impersonating my wife," his tone was smooth and calm as if he had gotten over it in such a short period, which Lauren found strange.
"However, it has been proven that you are not impersonating anyone and don’t have ulterior motives in coming here. As compensation, you and your friends will keep your jobs in the castle and will be given special chambers. It means you are no longer regular maids. I have told the chief maid to assign lesser work for your friends."
What about her, then?
"About what happened yesterday, forgive me for that. I didn’t mean to confuse you with my wife. You see, I am a passionate husband who’s been longing for my queen and I have mistaken you for her for a moment. But rest assured, I have been enlightened and I shall not make the same mistake twice," Alec said, his eyes narrowing subtly at Lauren. He would certainly not fail to recognize Lauren again. Such a mistake must not be made twice. He wouldn’t allow himself.
"The work of your friends has been taken care of. As for you, Miss Davis..." he trailed off, his voice turning huskier in the end, sending a subtle shiver down Lauren’s spine.
"Starting today, you are to serve me as my personal maid."
